LCD vs CRT

Size (or weight once on my desk) isn't an issue but I am torn between being able to use a DVI connector or having a great range in res and one third the Price.

Main questions.

Can I get he kind of in game clarity out of a LCD as I could a CRT?
Can I get a CRT hat uses a DVI connector (don't think its possible)?
Are their still Professional Real flat sceen CRTs made (no curved screen with a flat glass pane inserted in front)?

I really don't have a good wasy to check out in game looks of eiher type of monitors so I was wondering if people could shoot out a couple really good choices of *clear* Flatscreens and Flatpanels and their prices.

yes - plus put your helmet on and watch out for dangerously fast low flying opinions. lol

I'd go with a CRT, its a lot cheaper and supports much higher resolutions. The lack of a DVI port is not a big deal, DVI doesn't improve image quality a lot, if at all.

Depends on the panel. LCDs are not as good at dark colors as CRTs, but they're still quite usable. I see some banding in dark colors when I watch video on my 2005FPW, but it works great for gaming.

LCDs are a lot better than they used to be, response times aren't a problem anymore, and text and images are razor sharp. However, for gaming I still prefer a CRT, mainly because they support multiple resolutions. As a longtime gamer there are still many old games that I like to play that have fixed resolutions. If LCDs didn't blur the hell out of non-native resolutions I would probably prefer LCDs.

Well it depends on what you use your PC for?

If you're a gamer you're going to want a CRT. There are gaming LCDs but even those still have a bit of "ghosting" to them. The pixels can't refresh as fast as a CRT. A lot of Graphics designers have a large (read: 21" at least) CRT for their color quality and resolution. This is another area LCDs fall a bit short in, colors are often washed out or faded.

If you code or read, an LCD is usually preffered. LCDs don't have a refresh rate, it's a constant glow that's easier on your eyes and produces less strain when staring at the screen for hours. They also are much smaller and produce no where near the same amount of heat.

Personally, I prefer an LCD w/ a DVI connection but my version of gaming is WoW or Neverwinter Nights.

That was what I am thinking, I play All types of non-crappy games. FPS (Both twitch and thinking FPS), RTS, TBS, MMORPG and just about anything else that can be considered fun. A little History, I have a 19' that is about 5 years Old that about 2 months ago has started getting very blurry. I was Thinking of going LCD but when I loked at the choices I really didn't have the option of the types of resolutions I wanted unless I spent $1,200 or more and while if its worth it then I would just wait a while longer to replace my monitor. Then I looked at Prices or CRTs and I saw 21's going for ~$300.

Now My big issue is I know there are still Flat screen monitors made but it seems hard to find ones that uses Flat tube and Flat Pane, alot of the Monitors on newegg seem to be Round tube with a Flat Pane. So I guess my biggest question is What are the good CRTs that are true Flatscreens.

I think the SAMSUNG 1100DF is a true 'flat' CRT you can get for little money - might be wrong though...

Yes you can get a CRT with DVI. Its not the easiest thing to find, but they are out there. I've got a NEC CRT that has it. It's nothing special though, just DVI-A to BNC connection is all it really is. Which does nothing for quality.

Anyway, LCD's colors are brighter, and the geometry is perfect. Theres less eye strain, and the ghosting on a good model is next to nothing. General image quality and sharpness on my LCD is better than that of any CRT I've ever used. Once you go LCD you never go back. CRT's also get blurry over time. LCD's do not.

The biggest advantage to an CRT over LCD is going to be the flexibility of resolutions. LCD's are going to have a maximum resolution based on the size of the monitor. Anything less than that native resolution is going to look like ass, because it will have to stretch the pixels to cover the whole screen.

To the comment about DVI not enhancing quality. You're dead wrong. Try it on an LCD. Take two of the same LCD's and put them side by side. Then hook up one as analog and one with DVI. Show the same image on both of them and the difference will be very clear. Analog connections on LCD's looks like ass. There is definately a loss of quality. I tested it when I first got my LCD. The difference was huge. I could see it right away.

Really the biggest suck about getting an LCD is the fact that you'll have to either spend alot of money to get a good LCD over 20 inches in size, that has a 16ms or lower response time. For some reason the LCD's over 20 inches usually have a crap response time. It was hard enough to find one that did 16ms much less any lower. 16ms should also be the minimum you should consider for response time. The other issue is that anything 19 inches or less will only do 1280x1024 at a maximum. If you've got a high end rig with powerfull video cards, or an SLi setup, you'll likely find 1280x1024 limiting.

I've played games on my CRT and my LCD, and I can tell you that while the CRT has some advantages, I'll take the color and clarity of my LCD anyday. There is simply no comparison in that department. All I play is FPS and the occasional RTS.

Pick out 3 lcd's and 3 crt's. Correspond each of them to a number on a dice. Then roll.

Thats how I got my P4c 2.4ghz :D

QTF - that's about as good a wrap-up as you'll be able to get, topweasel.

I'm surprised this hasen't gone any worse than it already has, being that it's in the Videocard forum thats overrun with, well, yea...

I'd PM a mod to move you to the display section, you'll get real answers rather than 10 kids screaming how lcd's suck. That being said, Sir-Fragalot's post has alot of good points in it.

*Puts flame suit on*

Truthfully, you will pay more for a top of the line LCD as opposed to a top of the line CRT. If you do your research and actually look at all the displays you are insterested in, you'd be much better off than asking that question in here. There are so many LCD vs. CRT debate and it's all subjective and opinion related.

I would highly suggest looking at the displays before buying.

That being said, after looking at many, many displays myself before buying, I ended up getting a Dell 2001fp while it was on sale a while back. I also still have my Sony Trinitron E540B. Both are 21", both have great picture quality (excpept the CRT is showing it's age with the dimming and such). So comparatively I can't really say one is better than the other. But I've definatley migrated to the LCD for everything, and am trying to find somone to buy my Sony. The 2001fp has been able to suit all my needs with no loss in picture quality (IMO). The only regret I have with going with an LCD is the lack of range of usable resolutions. The 2001fp can really only be run in 1600x1200, everything else looks like crap, and running out of natvie res will damage the panel anyways. I have a 9800pro 128mb, so it would be nice to run 1024x768 fro Doom 3 and such, but it is playable for me, and I really only play CS:S anymore so I'll just buy the next gen video card.

One more thing to add about the LCD I bought, I've effectively been able to replace my TV, and my old 17" CRT I used for LANs as well. The 2001fp has many inputs, DVI, Analog, Composite and S-video. So when I have the LCD at home, it not only is hooked up to my computer, but my HT receiver as well, so I can watch TV, use my xbox, and pretty much everything else with this one display. It will also to picture in a picture, so I have a moive going on the xbox while surfing the web, or TV.

As far as ghosting for games and fast moving graphics, the whole reason I bought this display was because (I) saw no ghosting, this is another subjective thing..... I was lucky to have a friend with the same display so I could see it. But I had gotten used to only being able to use a CRT @ 60hrz in the old days since I had a crappy monitor before my sony.

In conclusion, if you are heavy, heavy into graphics, don't need the portability or features, have superman vision, and don't mind replacing displays every 4 years or so, then I would definatley buy a high end CRT.

Totally agree with this.

Thanks everybody, Actually I am kind of glad I screwed up and posted in posted in here. i have a feeling in displays I probably get more CAD and gfx developers then Gamers. It seems like a CRT is the route I am going to go. The biggest thing That just thought about might be the biggest reason to go CRT, the machine I am finishing up right now a plan on using for the next 2-3 yrs with only minor changes. I want to be able to Play games at the Highest rez I can, right now its about 1600 but in a year or 2 I might need to run them at a lower rez which means a LCD would be a bad choice. Thanks again, I will ask the displays forum for help finding a good 19-21" CRT.

Glad to assist..... That's a good reason to stick with CRTs.

Oops, didn't see this =b

I moved from dual CRTs to dual LCDs a year ago, so here's my thoughts:

+ LCD:
sharp text
perfect geometry
bright screen, less eyestrain
size

+ CRT:
color saturation
color depth
flexible resolution
speed/no ghosting

The screens I have now (Samsung 710T) are fast enough for gaming, but the colors aren't as nice as they are on some of the better Trinitron CRTs. I'm doing a lot more photoshop these days so I'm thinking about moving back to CRTs, but I might need a new desk to support the weight =b

I recently had a 2001FP sitting next to my CRT for a few weeks, to make a long story short LCD is no match for a high end calibrated Trinitron CRT when it comes to gaming & movies, but If I were buying a display only for office / text / web browsing then I'd go with LCD because of its sharp text output.

Yeah, I was really hopeing my Trinitron would've looked that much better next to my 2001fp. And yes the Trinitron was properly calibrated, it was just getting old.

Basically any LCD with 16ms response time or less will show no ghosting (of course there are exceptiosn to thsi rule as there is with any)
