A show that perhaps we grew up with, but I don’t think many kids these days know who “Unca Scrooge” is.

They don’t. They absolutely do not and that is no joke. We did focus tests when they played the game. They had no idea who the character was and didn’t know what Ducktales was.

What did kids say during the focus tests?

They go, who is this “Grandpa Duck?” They didn’t have a real connection to him apart from him being part of the duck family in Ducktales.

Did they get the pogo stick mechanic or was that too old school for them?

It’s pretty old school for them. The kids we focus tested with are Disney fans. They appreciate Disney as it is. They find the barrier for entry is easy enough for them, so they enjoyed the game. But, the concept of a 2D platformer starring this person is very foreign to them.

We did a lot of tuning within it. There was some frustration among kids because they’re not used to playing a game like this, which can be hard if you’re not used to playing a platform game. Easy mode has a lot of tuning and features that were pulled out of these focus tests to make easy mode more accessible for players that aren’t as used to 2D platform games as older games are.

What about the secret passages? Ducktales is full of them. Did kids figure that out?

Kids nowadays do not think that way. That’s why we needed to have a cutscene in there to explain you have to look in the walls for a secret.

Well, I'm not sure why you think they're "dumb" but...

*sings* Racecars, lasers, aeroplanes... *hums*

To kneel and wait in Castlevania 2 was a bullshit thing that tricked me and my friends up back in the 80's, but things like the up-down barrels in Sonic 3 we figured out in an instant in 1994.

I'd like to see kids of today get to that up-down barrel section of Sonic 3.

I'd like to see kids grown up playing COD games on the 360 online get to that section.

I'd really like to see this happen.

what about yesterday, or tomorrow... does this deal only last for today?

To correct the original poster, kids today aren't "dumb"....

Kids today lack imagination. Kids today lack a sense of wonder. Kids today lack a sense of adventure and wonder. They have EVERYTHING available to them (at least visually) instantly. Dinosaurs, Aliens, Laser beams, Monsters, Toys, entire worlds. It's all right there. Their minds don't need to think up this stuff, because a little box of plastic and silicon can give it to them.

So what's that do to the kids? They don't ask questions, they don't wonder about things, they don't dream, they don't explore. And, this might be stretching, I feel this is effecting how they learn; that they aren't grasping key methods of thought that translate into critical thinking skills, that translate into striving for innovation, that translate into wanting some more in life.

Just as the average person today can't change do a dozen seemingly easy tasks that depend on nothing more than common sense + basic logic; these kids will grow up to take that behavior to the extreme. EVERYONE will be extremely specialized in their abilities. Little Billy will grow up to be an accountant, and he'll be damned if he'll have even a shred of a clue on how to change a fuse in his car. Doctor's are already like this, specialists treating problems in their specialty, ignoring the interactions with the rest of the body. They care less and less about making a person "healthy", they just want X to be cured, despite it causing Y and Z side effects.

It'll be a strange world in 40 years, where people like us, who grew up in the infancy of computers, who saw how they began, watch as the children who grew up with them in their (somewhat) mature state live to completely depend on them, to the point of being helpless without them.

And it'll be even more strange in 100 years, where the idea of "memorizing" something is a foreign concept...why bother when nearly entire the world's population has the entire world's knowledge at their fingertips, displayed 1inch from their eye, voiced in their ear, instantly?

Yea, kids will look stupid to us. The human race will look stupid to us. But they won't care, because we'll be old, outdated, relics of another time.

p.s. I'm turning 30 this year, so I'm probably younger than a lot of you, so feel free to shake your old man stick at me too.

Fact kids today are dumb

Their lack of experience with old school games suggests they are stupid how exactly?

I am willing to bet that these focus tests would deliver much better results using MAME instead of NES. Arcade games were/are generally much better in every way imaginable.

Kids are fine. They were exposed to modern movie like crap from the get go. I think it's fair to say that most of today's adult gamers didn't even play games 10-15 years ago and would react - and perform - considerably worse than kids.

Almost makes me wish I had a kid to teach some Quake/StarCraft. You know, games that require actual skills and thinking. Luckily I gave up on having kids long ago.

Based upon the vast majority postings in this forum and on the web, I'd say it isn't just kids...

I miss 90's cartoons, it's a shame so little has come close to their quality since. As for NES games, Capcom taught players how to recognise patterns in its level design, and if all else failed, RTFM.

Kids were geniuses in the 1800's. It's been going downhill ever since.

Yeah, dat der nuclear energy and modern technology was all made in the 1800's.

Lets get real here, everyone after the Renaissance can be considered stupid. That is about how much sense this thread makes. Cheese.

WOW and people have said I make generalizations!
But this sound right on par with your generation you're the same age as my sister the "ME" generation the ones not getting married having kids so focused on careers and yourselves.
it all depends on the parents I grew up in the golden age of gaming and exposed my kids to all the classics my 13 year old has the original Zelda map on his wall I handed down to him from my old Nintendo power and still plays old and new games.
Ill completely agree most kids I see are attached to a device as a baby sitter and never got a broad experience of older and new things.
I will agree to some level but most of the posts are pretty freaking harsh I've seen some really bright open minded kids around me, my freshman daughter is doing things I didn't do or learn until end of high school beginning of college.
But my kids have the right guidance of two parents and everything needs limits to the amount of usage and exposure.
our children are what WE make them into.

BTW not singling you out but your post summed up what I wanted to comment to.
let's face it guys some of those old school games were freaking HARD! no rails there.

As a side note my son is 13 and the other day on the Wii U we played Punch out and made a challenge to see who could get farther without losing that lil m'fer made it to Mr.dream without restarting i was pissed had to be all his patapon practice! its all timing.

Unfortunately, this is very accurate and a likelihood. :( Critical thinking, reading comprehension, and self-sufficiency are rapidly becoming things of the past.

I have a hard drive full of 80's (and some 90's) cartoons, and a huge collection of the original looney tunes cartoons just for my kids to watch. we're talking the mother fucking centurions, here. He-man, thundercats, BRAVESTARR, Duck Tales, The Real Ghostbusters, etc etc. My Son LOVES them. My daughter likes the old looney tunes the most (she is 2)

It is plugged into whatever console is plugged into the living room TV and available for their viewing pleasure any time. Feels good, man.

oh, and my son likes the duck tales NES game, even though he isnt very good at it yet.

lol... This argument.

Back when I was a kid, adults thought playing video games were dumb.

Sif not have Earthworm Jim or Gargoyles.

I fucking never knew you could duck in the water in the first stage of Contra.:confused:
I've always assumed going in the water was death.

So you mean to tell you never fell off the bridges that blow up and landed in the water? I find that really hard to believe.

I blame refined sugar and other simple carbs... sucks the soul and numbs the mind.

I blame preservatives & high fructose corn syrup in processed foods. Definitely clouds my mind... basic sugars & carbs rarely do that.

I don't think todays youth is more retarded than usual. I think they are totaly dependent on technology, which makes them appear stupid compared to older generations.

and ya what's up with the shit cartoons these days. the toons of the 80-90s were were awesome. let alone the classics like looney toons, under dog,Tennessee tuxedo, ect. which are never on tv any more. they are still 10 times better than almost anything coming out today. i guess they are no longer politically correct so they don't get aired any more.

Kids are a reflection of their parents and it is their parents job to guide them.

Minds have to be molded and shaped. Most of what people consider 'smart' is learned and taught.

If kids are dumb today its because parents are dumb.

I agree for the most part (like 90%), but there are things that are difficult to figure out, like how the school/food system really afflicts your children. You can't monitor them 24/7, and if you do you run the risk of them becoming too dependent. Of course, I agree that a smart parent will be able to do the necessary research, but there's so much conflicting information out there you can't blame them entirely. A child is typically raised by the community and environment that surrounds it, not by just one or two people.

basic sugars & carbs rarely do that
oh, I didn't mean sugars and carbs found naturally in foods, I was talking about the processed junk. I do believe, however to a smaller extent of course, that this includes the widely used "white flour" that is stripped of all fiber and nutrients.

I would say I was kinda joking, putting blame solely on one particular thing. Food is a big one though, and often overlooked.

How could he not like the Contra music?!

We can never rest against those filthy Communists! Fluoridation was only the first step. Have you ever noticed how countries outside the U.S. don't use refined sugars? Communists have infiltrated our food manufacturing industry and are poisoning us with these refined sugars!
