Just heard about wow in china

who the hell do they think they are dictating what people wish to do of their own free will?

Not to sound like a smartass, but obviously they think they are the Chinese Government and this type of stuff is pretty common.

There have also been regulations in the past where one account couldn't play WOW for more than 6 (?) hours a day... so many people had multiple accounts.

Dude you might want to come out from under that rock you've been under. The Chinese government has been dictating what people do for a very long time.

that is ridiculous, who the hell do they think they are dictating what people wish to do of their own free will?
Holy shit! I can go on finally killing all the people I hate? I thought some invisible force was stopping me

Of all the atrocities one might find in the Chinese government's actions, you are appalled at video game blood coloring regulations?

I'm shocked, shocked I tell ya. It's hard to believe something like this coming from an oppressive dictatorship. And I thought the Chinese were our friends. At least, I thought that was why we lit up the Empire State Building in red and yellow to celebrate their anniversary. And why we've sold our country away to them Reds.

Yay for Mao Tse Tung, at least according to Anita Dunn and multitudes of others surrounding our current president.

This is definitely worse than the Great Leap Forward OR the Cultural Revolution. Shame on the ChiComs!

OP: Compared to the first half of the 20th Century, China today is practically a left wing hippie commune that grows its own hemp and sings "imagine" day and night. The fact that there is even some semblance of capitalism at all that allows the sale of something like a video game made by someone other than the government is shocking.

have to suck on something, as China is a massive potential consumer market.

I don't think people here will give a damn about a video game until the Chinese stop imprisoning and killing religious people.

News Flash: Not every country has the same freedoms as America.

LOL! So true... This is nothing new from China. It's a communist/socialist society that uses the government to take away liberty and people's free will in the name of 'hey, it's good for everyone and it sounds good'.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one nervous about the direction a certain country is going lately. Gives me hope for the future of that 'certain country'. :)

God it's so ethnocentric to talk about how they don't have liberty and somehow that's all the matters in the world just because we pretend we have it. You don't have real liberty either brother, with the way American tort law works and corporations own you. You only have the illusion of it, just enough to keep you marching off to work every day.

The fact is that the Chinese people value harmony of society over occidental ideals of personal liberty and it's that simple. So yeah it seems weird to you but to them it's just how it is. Just like WalMart taking over every mom and pop shop in our country is just how it is and we only complain at parties and on forums and not with any action that will make a difference, like to stop spending money there.

translation .......blizzard or the isp isent paying off the right government officials to get this stuff.......passed through chinese law lol.

Yes, Chinese citizens value harmony over all else and praise their government. That is why the government has to keep a strangle hold on the media and communications, banning all talk of dissensions, running people over with tanks to shut them up, etc... Are you ignorant?

Anwho, why are they banned from seeing bones and gore? is this another government step to make them too pussified to revolt if they ever manage to organize under the iron hand of tyranny?

My friend lives in China and this stuff is common. Youtube is blocked, as is facebook and a few dozen other big name sites.

No, what I think is ignorant is expecting the whole world to care about the stuff we care about and follow us in lockstep.

Ever met anyone that didn't want basic human rights and free speech? (*note, if a gun is held to their head or threat of imprisonment is implied, it doesn't count).

Yes it's ignorant to be ethnocentric. But why assume that the status quo is always what a group of people desire?

By the way, I'm American Chinese (born in America). I know a lot of people who are from China. Some of them play WOW here in the US and love the lack of restrictions imposed by the government.

So in this specific case, government control over a game like WOW is definitely not something they want culturally.

Ok OP. Are you actually serious with this post or are you just trying to stir up the [H]? I call shens on your lack of knowledge about how the Chinese government has been run for the last 50 yearsor so.

Well since this site is probably blocked in China anyways, I don't think this thread will stir up much of anything but turning into another "I quit wow because it ruined my life bla bla bla" thread.

you're right lloose.

I quite WoW because it ruined my life. It made my wife cheat on me, my job lay me off, and my belly get fat!

Shame on WoW!

Well since this site is probably blocked in China d.

Actually, no. When I was over there this past summer, I was able to access HardOCP and Hardforum without any issue.

Now, trying to get on Facebook or Youtube was a bitch.

You're receiving this message from China ... right now! I'm sitting in Shanghai as I type! :)

And frankly, I have no time for self-righteous multiculturalists who look the other way as human beings are trampled into the dust, all because they're too cowardly or historically ignorant to assert the awesome value of the rights and freedoms that Western civilization has temporarily secured. It's just their culture? Please. Why not try actually talking to an actual Chinese person living in actual China?

Am I saying that all cultures are/should be the same? No. Am I saying that Western civilization is the pinnacle of human existence and free from error? No. Am I saying that all thinking human beings want the freedom to make their own choices about significant issues in their lives, without being shoved aside by existing power structures? Uh, yeah. And am I saying that there are plenty of places in the world that don't have that freedom, and that Americans, among a few others, do, and ought to be deeply appreciative to their forebears for it? You'd better believe it.

And, to the OP's point, am I saying that red-colored digital blood is a significant issue in people's lives here in China? Well, no, actually :) I just started reading and got all hot under the collar about some posters' ... lack of perspective.

This may be the first time in my life I've ever flamed anyone. It's kind of exciting. I can see why some people do it a lot ;)
