It's Summer Again....

even if our sponsor is Budweiser ? hmm? :p

Oh damn..... I never thought of that......

So, who do you think we need to call? I'll be happy to do the legwork on this one... just think of the radio commercials....

Real men of genius....

Today we salute you mr. proud member of the [H]Mowed|Over club.

im sure we can hold them off, i just added about 2000ppd and thats with my rig running only about 50% production due to sketchy internet

indeed, one of us has to win the lottery or start smuggling cocaine or something, and when he (or she) is loaded, he can then start buying the [H]orde lots of super folding PCs :p

Well, I was offered a job today to make a 4 hour round trip which should have netted me 30g, but I decided to turn it down.

I should probably re-establish my Sicilian connections and see what I can get from that. Every little bit helps, capiche.

It might also help if I get one of my quads back up and running. Had to pull the hard drive out of it to put in my main machine because the OS drive in it died. I have a replacement drive but after the day I had today, I just didn't feel like messing with it. Reinstalling 3 fresh OSes and a couple VMs just wasn't something I could do tonight. Hopefully I shall get to it tomorrow.

We need ninja borg, sneak into everywhere and borg for the [h]orde! (maybe some pirate borg too)

It would appear that they beat us to a milestone. On 6-22 they hit 1.6Million, a mark that we have yet to reach. Thats something that hasn't happened in a while.

Course we were also the first to 800 million points, and later this week we'll be the first to 900 million. So that's something.

Notfreds FTW!! Who needs a stinkin hard drive to fold... :D

Man, how true that is. ATM I run 2x E6600's on NotFreds CD's and is it easy, quick and dependable. :D

OBTW No HD, no keyboard, no meese, no monitor, no freaking nothing!! Woot :p

IMHO the only thing better is the GPU2 client and I'm still waiting to see what the power draw is, I don't want to restrict myself to only specialized folding or buy the forking power company ;)

I have two quad cores with 8800 GTSs in my 2nd floor office. It was making the whole upper floor about 80-83F during the day. We didn't splurge for the dual zone A/C when we built our house (slaps forehead...would have been worth every penny) so there's about a 10 degree difference between the main floor and 2nd floor during the summer.
That is, until I closed my office door. Even though the A/C vent still blows in the office, it hits about 90-95F during the day. The 2nd floor stays significantly cooler though. Only about 5 degrees hotter than the 1st floor.
So, it sucks for my wife when she goes in there to check her email, etc, but it is a great way to help isolate the effects of folding heat from the rest of the house and minimize the impact on the A/C bill. I just had to adjust my overclocks appropriately (dropped the quads to 3ghz for the summer).
All that will change once my basement is finished and the office moves down there though. Max oc 24/7/365 at that point.

@jebo_4jc just a suggestion from a fledgeling WC'er and a rabid fan, but wouldn't WC'ing the boxen help or at least WC'ing the GPU's? I've read where most of the heat comes from the GPU's vs the CPU's, does that sound about right? I know a "top flight" WC'ing loop can be "mucho denaro" (expensive), but I think in the long run it might be a good idea in your case.

I believe if you don't go "primo" components in a WC'ing loop you might just as well stick with first rate air HSF's. (maybe third party coolers for the cards)

No optical drive in the machine. I didn't see a need for an optical drive for it as the only time it would need one is for OS install and in this case, it was previously my main system and already had the OS installed and running VMs. This means the drive was pulled and put in my new main system for use. The only other change was when I pulled and sold the E6400 I had in it and replaced it with a Q6600. All I did then was start up a second VM instance for folding.

Ah - yeah - no optical drive does make notfreds a bit more complicated.

Right, the first to 500M and every milestone since, first to 1M, 1.1M, 1.2M, etc, longest run at #1, first to catch google. But thats not going to keep us at the top.

The competitive escalation among our top producers probably will though.

That's a mighty nice ramp you had there today gentlemen....

And yours is also very impressive, considering that before the Chimp Challenge, all of you seems to be busy cooking roos legs or naming computer builds after a Star Trek theme, letting you sit 4th in ppd

Looks like every team had a real nice day yesterday. MaxPC finally rejoined the millionaires club.

Yeah, it's [H]ard to be humble sometimes, but even if we do eat a lot tamales and "super duper" French fries, team #33 still folds like "there ain't no tomorrow" :D)

A couple of weeks ago, i actually got a nice present from you guys (thanks BTW!)
Maybe we should add Uncle Sam to the list of OCAU sponsors... ;)

But i have a problem: i need some help deciding how to best 'stimulate' my FAH score. do you guys reckon i should get an 8800GT or wait for a cheaper 9800GTX?? Decisions, decisions.

PS.... i went to an Outback Steakhouse when i was over there and it was a bit of a letdown. we don't actually eat those dishes. it's all marketing :p

From what I've been seeing at the FCF, the 9800GTX edges out a typical 8800GT by an average of a couple of hundred PPD. It's not much but it seems to be a better performer. If you can find the 8800GT for a low price, it should be the better bang for the buck but YMMV with the performance of either card. Also of possible interest is the new 9800GTX+.

Now for an uneducated question.

What is the wattage draw and heat TDP of a 9800GTX vs a 8800GT for a pretty much folding only boxen that folds 24/7 ?

Xilikon was nice enough to tell me the 8800GT was the best "bang for the buck" at the time. (prior to the 9800GTX) Have things changed, is it too early to tell ? I don't know "jack" shite about graphics cards.

Thanks for any answer to this uninitiated to graphics card person.

Edit: Oops  thanks APOLLO for pointing out the 9800GTX has been in the channel a while and I was probably smarter asking about the new 9800GTX+ graphics card, D'oh.... As you can see I'm not all that swift on graphics cards.

Actually, this is a very good post. Off hand, I can't say what the power consumption figures of either card is without looking at the specs. The 9800GTX has been available for a while, it's the 9800GTX+ that is 'new.' I still believe the 8800GT is the best BFB especially in the US where prices are so low, but that may be changing soon. I would say to wait it out for another week or two if you're looking at buying until we have more conclusive data on the various cards to choose from including the new Ati products.

Also to consider is the fact that some older 9800GTX cards are already available with higher clocks than the new GTX+ cards. This muddies the waters of choice somewhat. Case in point is this card right here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/xfx-geforce-9800-gtx-black-edition-review-test/1

I've 2x 9800GTX's.

Max power consumption figures for this card is ~160 watts according to the reviews I read before buying the card.
Each is doing ~5,500 PpD @ 725,1950,1111 and is only pulling ~100 watts extra from the wall according to my Kill-A-Watt meter.

Luck .......... :D

I knew it all along!

Right now, it's a bit of a toss up between the 8800GT and the 9800GTX for the bang for the buck. You can get 2 8800GT for the price of a 9800GTX if you shop carefully but on the other hand, a 9800GTX take less space, have a dual-slot cooler which exhaust the heat outside and is a bit more efficient.

This is why it's not always easy to tell and only you know what is needed.
