Iphone 6 vs S5

Then let's compare the price of an used LG G2 on Swappa.

From the last post:

A HTC One is between $170 to $400, with the $400 being the 64GB version on AT&T.

An iPhone 5S is between $289 to $650, with the $650 being the 64GB version on Verizon.

And now...

A LG G2 is between $165 to $360, with the $360 being sold by an unknown seller on TMo listing as "Fair" conditioned but also "brand new" in description.

If you want a worse comparison, sure, we'll play.

It has a higher resale value because Apple has no competition within its ecosystem, Why does no one get that? They honestly should never be that high of cost but its apple...

Because when you are selling your phone nobody cares why it gets a high price, just that it gets a high price. That's all that matters.

x2

Since only Apple is making the phones, and only makes 1 (recently 2) phone a year, it makes sense that it would hold it's value longer. With Android, on the other hand, there are a dozen flagships out every year... sometimes multiple flagships from a single OEM... kind of difficult to resell when the next greatest phone in that ecosystem is a weeks from release.

Because when you are selling your phone nobody cares why it gets a high price, just that it gets a high price. That's all that matters.

So it basically creates an artificial high price? Its not high priced because its the best shit in the world...

I have no problems with you saying that iPhones resale better due to artifical inflation, but the fact still stands that iPhones resale better. You could probably write a paper on the various reasons why, such as Apple is just a more valuable brand, etc, but all we're talking about is which resales better, and it's clearly the iPhone.

Facts and not opinions...

Apple also doesn't allow anyone to discount iPhones. Every other product on the market gets discounted by retailers as they see fit. Apple products never get discounts or special offers.

Its a desirable status symbol, hence the demand, hence high prices and resale.

Just like any other "premium" brand out there; Beats, Dyson, Bose, Gucci, etc.

Maybe full retail, but I think the iPhone 5S has been $99 on-contract for the past several months on Verizon, which is mid-range pricing on a phone.

The current offer that Verizon has with their Edge plan makes it cheaper than using their subsidized family plan.

As long as you get the 10GB or higher shared data, you get $25 off each line on the Edge plan. Most of the new high end phones are around $30 a month for 20 months in order to pay them off.

So you are basically paying $5 a month for 20 months which is $100 instead of the 199.99 subsidized price on a 2 year contract.

We were on the 6GB plan before, so it is costing an extra $20 per month.. but we are paying $125 less per month for the line access part of the plan.

And to top it off, each line gets an extra 1GB of data.. so we have 15GB total now for only slightly more per month than we were paying for 6GB.
Its not cheaper at all for us. We pay $135 right now for 4 lines. That plan you are talking about is $160 a month + the device payment.

Thats incredibly cheap, who are you with? Even straight talk costs more than $135 for 4 lines.

Verizon, we only have 700 minutes but we only use about 350 a month, none of us are talkers, we all text a ton. I think the new plans are all shams, they make it seem like a deal, you get unlimited minutes! Unlimited text! but your bill is now super high, why do I have to pay more for something I'm not going to use.

At least you don't have to worry about the S5 bending in your pocket like the iPhone 6. I can see Apple marketing special carry cases for the iPhone 6 and Plus if this is indeed true.

http://mashable.com/2014/09/23/bent-iphone-6/

Shocker: thin, metal objects can bend if you put a lot of pressure on them.

Yes, it's certainly a concern, but this is also true of the iPhone 5/5s and any other devices that use a thin profile and relatively soft materials. I'd also like to know how common this actually is, versus the handful of anecdotal reports we've seen so far.

Wow that is scary, actually. With the 4 and 5s I never felt like I could bend it like that with my fingers. That is hilarious, and scary at the same time. Maybe I'll just wait for the g4/s6 or 6s then. I knew the phone was painfully thin but being able to bend the phone like that with your bare hands is a deal breaker for me.

S5 bents too if you applied the same force on it, or it would just break apart...

And it's been like this on any phone....

Amazing how media starting to bring it up again.....

show your work, i cant find anything on the internet that suggests the s5 is susceptible to bending.

I think he means it flexes, all phones flex, even the glass flexes, only issue is when it deforms like this.

And the Nexus 5 currently has an average sale price of $289 on Swappa, which is down from an MSRP of $399.

The iPhone 5S 16GB has an average sale price of $422, down from an MSRP of $649.

So a year after release the iPhone has lost over $200 in value and the Nexus 5 has lost barely over $100.

Care to continue? Should I mention the fact that the iPhone 5S lost $80 in average sale price in the last month? So are you going to all of a sudden change your tune that iPhones have great resale for 11 months after purchase, and that Nexus phones are actually better for resale? (Doubt it, fanboys don't change)

Personally I don't give a shit, I am still using my 3 year old cellphone and it suits me just fine. I just find this argument kind of pointless because different phones will have different resale I don't think one is really much better than any other, most people end up breaking their phones anyways.

Touchwiz is not my favorite interface but its not as bad as people make it out to be. You have a bit of lag in areas, so what? Does it stop you from using the phone? Sometimes its harder to get things done, sometimes its easier. If touchwiz was as bad as they say it would make you wonder why Samsung outsells ever other phone maker including apple by huge margins. Clearly the phones are not unusable. Also search for posts from various users who comment and you will clearly see their bias.

At the end of the day the features positives outweigh the touch wiz negatives. IMO in all the years using phones HTC did it best for me, unfortunately they have too many negatives on feature and hardware standpoints.

Lol of course it will. It's plastic. It shouldn't be prone to deforming though... It will likely either spring back or shatter depending on the type of plastic they used

Without some serious renforcment (webbing/ribs) or making it out of some super rigid material (iron or possibly steel?), you can't make an object with the surface area of a phone and as thin as they are and expect it 'not' to bend with pressure applied to it

(I'm a designer by trade)

The same problem did exist on the 5/5s (and possibly the 4/4s... Although those were pretty stout). I know for a fact that it even existed on the original iPhone (old roommate put a big old dent in his). I don't think you need any sort of special case... Just common sense. Don't sit on it and, if you're wearing tight pants, take it out of your pocket :p

What's the average condition of the 5s and the average condition of the Nexus 5? It hardly seems useful to compare resale prices if their conditions haven't been normalized to each other. Are Nexus 5s listed on Swappa more likely to be listed in better or worse condition than iPhones?

Apparently, you're wrong.

How so? Perhaps it's just the camera angle, but I'm seeing some significant bending. That it mostly snaps back to its original form is unsurprising: plastics tend to have excellent memory. And it's one of the two things he suggested would happen.

The Nexus 5 is still current generation as the Nexus 6/X hasn't even come out nor has it even been announced. The iPhone 5S dropped in resale pricing since the announcement of the iPhone 6. So the resale price comparison here is invalid. Wait a week after the Nexus 6/X goes on sale and then we talk.

P. S. For a time I was known as one of the worst Apple haters here, this is just hilarious. Just telling it like it is

Is there an android skin that makes a phone completely unusable? TouchWiz may be not as good as all other launchers but it's not unusable? TouchWiz makes androids flagships worse than iOS. Otherwise, I'll pick any other android flagship any day, even Huawei!

There are plenty of reasons why Samsung outsells everyone else, and it got very little to do with whether people choose it for TouchWiz. It's got the most to do with branding, marketing, and price.

P. S. I actually do have a Huawei P7

Agreed.

Did you not see it bending when he applied pressure to it?

edit: I'll make it easy for you

According to Swappa's sales history, the iPhone 5S average dropped $90 in the past month due to the release of the iPhone 6. That's the difference between the N5 and the current 5S.

I'll bet you when the N6 is released, the N5 will drop no more than $50 average. That was the trend with the N4 when the N5 was released - the Nexus phones hold their value extremely well as well.

PS you completely ignored my post about my experiences selling a GS3 and a 4S at the same time in post #61. It paints a better picture of the actual depreciation of 2 year old tech than your suppositions do.

Agreed... Samsung has somehow gotten themselves into the public eye (marketing, marketing, marketing) and NOT because their phones are better than anyone else's. Agree 80%.

Why not 100%?? Because almost ALL Samsung owners go on and on about how nice their screens are. Like it or not... many people buy Samsung phones for their oversaturated AMOLED screens. I've asked FOUR Note 2/3 owners over the last few months what they like about their phones. They've ALL told me the screen. They like how "nice" the colours are. Go figure.

still got nothing to do with TouchWiz, so we'll agree with that. :)

You do realize that the Nexus 5 and the LG G2 are the same exact phone, with the only difference being software right?

Its not cheaper at all for us. We pay $135 right now for 4 lines. That plan you are talking about is $160 a month + the device payment.

Right.. the monthly charge will be higher.. but, if you are due for a phone upgrade it is going to be cheaper overall switching to Edge if you are getting the high end phones.

I did the math, and over the life of a 2yr contract vs 20 month phone payoff, it ends up being $50 to $100 cheaper per line in the end.. and that is not counting the extra 4 months that you would have left on your contract if you are on the 2yr plan.

And like I said before, they discount each line $25 per month if you have at least the 10GB data plan on Edge.

If you are only getting a very minimal data plan to begin with it may end up being a wash or slightly cheaper to stay on the 2 yr plan.

I ran the math multiple times to make sure I wasn't messing up anywhere. I also had Verizon verify my numbers.
