iPhone 5 vs .50 Cal

Unless you're using it solely to produce money for charity, you're wasting its cycles and the electricity. When you play games, you're being wasteful. When you're browsing the web, you're being wasteful. When you're posting on here, you're being wasteful. It's all leisure.

It's all leisure, by the way, that you're conducting on an overpowered computer. You could have bought a 3770k and sent the extra money to charity. Instead, you're wasting it.

Are you understanding, yet? You waste all kinds of money and resources from many viewpoints.

This is particularly galvanized by the fact that you're accessing high-speed internet from a high-end computer, and using those resources to go onto a news section on a computer hardware enthusiast website(known for its emphasis on excess in computing), and bitch and moan and whine about how much people waste money and resources.

Is that all you have as a response? Or is the prospect of actually defending hatred of people over their wealth that distasteful to you?

Personally, I thought your comment was pretty bogus and thought the shortish "Hoo Boy" was apropos.

If it was bogus, where's your counter?

Few things more irritating than people who say "you're wrong, but I'm not interested in saying why".

As you see from other comments, it doesn't matter. If someone is rich, they're an asshole, so they DESERVE to give huge chunks of money to charity.

If someone is rich and they don't give huge chunks of money to charity, they're an even bigger asshole.

Ultimately, for the unevolved among us...the more someone has of something they don't...regardless of how hard they worked or what they did to get it...the bigger an asshole they are.

Class warfare. A century ago, it started the Soviet Union. Enjoy.

While its completely unrelated to the topic of being a wasteful douche, you are right.

I didn't want to go here, but I can't let this one go unanswered...

There is class warfare in America.

Ever since the 70's, big money has been spent on lobbying and sometimes outright buying politicians to enact laws that make the super wealthy even wealthier, make the poor even poorer and crush the middle class. Be it through tax cuts and loop holes for the wealthy, or any number of other perks.

Money now completely rules politics.

Because of this careful pot by the super wealthy classes to turn America into something that more resembles a south american banana republic, income inequality has never been greater in America. The rich have gotten richer, the poor poorer and the middle class is now mostly non existent.

Make no mistake. There has been class warfare in America for over 40 years.

The wealthy classes have declared total war on the poor and middle classes and they have been allowed to do so unopposed.

It's just that finally someone is fighting back against the wicked, greedy onslaught.

If it was bogus, where's your counter?

Few things more irritating than people who say "you're wrong, but I'm not interested in saying why".

Guess you'll just have to be irritated, because I figured giving any type of "counter" was a fool's errand.

Who cares how easy it was? It would have been even easier to not give away any money.

What good is giving to charity if people like you are just going to roll their eyes, scoff, and say "no big deal"?

You're missing my point entirely, because you compared someone else "buying useless shit" vs a very rich man giving away to charity. Said very rich man probably has all the useless shit he wants 10 times over.

And for the record I didn't say no big deal, as long as church doesn't count as charity (not knowing exactly where the money went)

While I agree with your thought process here, this isn't quite the same thing as the topic is about. The fact that a phone was bought and shot with a .50 cal is a senseless waste of money. What did he figure would happen? .50 cals are made to pierce armor so it would obviously make mince meat of the phone.

In your examples there that's akin to me buying a game and then burning it before I got home. I knew what would happen so why in the world couldn't someone call me stupid for such an egregious act? I'm certainly not against "stress testing" but that was just, well obvious what would happen.

I could get into the economics of it more but that's just another whole topic of conversation that ultimately is slanted now days. The fact remains that this was a senseless waste of resources.

Utterly wrong, and a knee-jerk shallow meme that has been pushed for nearly 30 years.

The wealthy classes have declared total war on the poor and middle classes and they have been allowed to do so unopposed.

You are perpetuating class warfare by this very language. Who are "the wealthy classes"? Everybody in the 1%? How about the 2%? Where's the cutoff where the plot begins and innocent, fair, non-hateful moneymaking ends?

But again...why minimize or otherwise characterize a donation as "not hard"? That's millions of dollars that probably helped a lot of people. Why the qualifier just to keep from being too grateful?

It doesn't matter. Its still money that could have been given to the poor. PC games are nothing but entertainment. Likewise, so are expensive PC parts. You know why that video was made? For entertainment. Whether he used that iPhone or shot it to pieces is irrelevant as the poor are the same off as they were before.

The fact that a phone was bought and shot with a .50 cal is a senseless waste of money.

That's your opinion, not a fact. He did not consider it a waste of money. The money was worth it to him in order to make that video. As has already been addressed, many people probably consider it a "fact" that spending huge amounts of money on a computer just to play games with it is a waste of money, as well as time and resources. You don't.

You know politics are hot when a video of a dude shooing a .50 through an iP5 pulls Romney, the Mormon Church and class warfare into the thread.

Instead this money has gone to Apple supporting the every company the shooter is trying to make a statement about.

It's kind of moronic...

Why did they blow up a Lamborghini in Mission Impossible 3? The same reason this guy destroyed the phone. It's entertainment. In both cases, the video/movie earned those who produced it money. The RatedRR guy has half a million views on that video within a day's time. It's entertainment, not economics, get over it.

i haven't watched these vids in a long time.
i forgot the best part at the end, where the kid says "spendin that googoo money"

got a chuckle out of that.

spendin that googoo money

that's how he gets the money to shoot up the iToys.

don't be judgmental.

If they never blew up another car in Hollywood, I'd be all the happier for it. I suppose if they were illustrating a war story with authenticity (and meaning) then I could be persuaded.

You seem hung up on the idea that we find wealth offensive. As soon as you get over that wall, let me know.

Ditto.

Never understood people who do this.

Why not donate the money to charity instead? Save some starving children.

One of the few things I hate more than Apple and their products is waste.

The clip has over 561,000 views, so under the Youtube Partners program he could have made anywhere from $500 to $1500. This is modest wealth generation, not waste.

I'm not the one whining about wealthy people doing what they want with their money, whether it's a crappy presidential candidate or a YouTube star. Combined with everyone directing their ire towards the "1%" and repeating "income inequality" like proletariat drones, it's clear that I'm not the one with the hangup.

Bad Ass!. I so much want one of those weapons. Not saying my M1 Garand or 8mm Mauser can't do some serious damage but love the muzzle brake shots on the BMG!

You've been quoting me when making comments about us disliking his wealth. I told you from post #1 that I have no qualms about his wealth but you persist in thinking that we're offended from it. I don't like him because he's not a presidential material. His wealth has nothing to do with it.

You seem to have a problem with me having an opinion about Romney, but you're always going on about me being offended by his wealth. For what it's worth, Obama's got a fuck load of money too. Not as much as Romney, but he's got a lot. But I'm supportive of him and his policies - most of them anyways.

Try and wrap your head around that.

And for fucks sake, this is about the iPhone and a high powered rifle. Get off your Romney high horse and accept that nobody has to agree with you.

Riiiiiiiight.

But please, keep making the case that an i7-3930k will make money, but an IPhone won't. It's just awesome.

You like getting your information from horribly slanted pro-right wing sources I see.

If you cherry pick your data like they did, sure you can paint the picture that article is trying to.

Truth is that the income gap in America is growing rapidly, and has been since the late 70s

change-since-1979-600.gif

There is no other way around it.

The U.S. ranks 64th in the world in Income Inequality.

Right in between such 3rd world countries as the Ivory Coast and Uruguay.

The right has used the excuse that "rising tides raise all ships" for too long. It is patently false.

A greater and greater proportion of income in this country is winding up in the pockets of the ultra rich, through tax policy that lets them get away without paying their fair share, and removal of essential regulation that allows financial institutions to prey on low income, under privileged and under served people.

It disgusts me that in the worlds richest country, one in 6 people struggle with hunger, and it sickens me when the proposed solutions is to further cut programs aiding the poor, regulations protecting the every day man from wealthy special interests and further cut taxes on the super wealthy.

Even as we speak, wealthy special interests groups and corporations are flooding the political landscape with money, further distorting the electoral process in the hands of those would transfer even more wealth to the top 1%, and putting in place draconian Voter ID laws designed explicitly to disenfranchise the poor who might vote to do something about it.

I would recommend watching this and this for some much needed perspective.

They have great soup kitchens. My soul only cost them nine vegetable soup cups and a pile of crackers!

Why do people want crackers with soup, it's just weird. Bread I could understand, as you can combine the flavours, but crackers just go crappy or you get weird shards in it. You could have soup then crackers, but they don't share any kind of symbiosis. :(

I've been trying really hard not to get involved in this discussion, but allow me to pick apart your post bit by bit.

income gap growing since the 70's - both sides can cherry pick data all they want. That chart, for example, does not show the actual purchasing power of the various groups. Regardless of the number of dollars, purchasing power has increased dramatically. Or, put another way, people are vastly better off today than they were 40 years ago, regardless of income gap.

rich not paying their fair share - this has been debunked so many times, I'm not sure what planet you're living on here. The top 5% earn about 32% of all income and pay nearly 60% of the taxes. I'd call that paying way MORE than a fair share. About 47% of wage earners pay zero income tax at all. I hardly call *that* a fair share, either. If you want to drag SS/Medicare into the topic, we can have that discussion, but facts are facts: the wealthy already pay more than a fair share.

Or, put another way, if you confiscated all of the income, assets, houses, boats, stocks, companies, etc of all the millionaires and billionaires in the country, it would cover roughly one half of one year's deficit, and less than a quarter of one year's budget. Raising their taxes to 100% would hardly register as statistical noise in the amount of revenue generated. Clearly, taxing the rich isn't the answer.

1 in 6 struggle with hunger - are you referring to the 46 million who rely on food stamps? When the biggest health problem facing low-income households is *obesity*, I have a hard time taking that statistic seriously. As for cutting aid to the poor, I have a different philosophy: let charitable organizations handle it. They can do a much better and more efficient job than the government.

further cut taxes for the wealthy - If you are talking about the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, then yes, Republicans want to keep those lower rates in place. But not just for the wealthy. For everyone else, too. Bear in mind that the lowest tax bracket got the biggest cut--from 10% down to 5%.

transfer of wealth to the 1% - By what means is this money being transferred by the government? "transfer of wealth" means taking money (through taxes) from one entity and giving to another via subsidies, below-market-rate loans, and grants. I see the government transferring wealth from productive, profitable companies to failed companies like GM, Chrysler, and any number of "green" energy companies. I see government transferring wealth from productive middle-class earners and businesses to able-bodied people who are unwilling to work. I don't see it going the other way. Unless by "transfer of wealth" you mean allowing businesses to produce goods and services that people will *willingly* part with their cash to buy? Transferring wealth to the 1%? Ain't happenin', unless it's the 1% among "green energy" companies.

draconian voter-id laws - Draconian? I think not! Only ten states require photo ID. All the other states which require ID will accept a whole range of other documents as ID. Things like a utility bill or bank statement. Those states which require photo ID make it super easy to get a photo ID.

disenfranchising the poor who would otherwise vote to do something about it - And what, specifically, would they vote for? Statistics show that low-income voters vote for politicians who will give them more of the rich people's money. Explain to me, please, how handouts lead to people escaping poverty?

All I got from this thread is that Milt Romminey wouldn't shoot a phone, he would throw it out an airplane window. Off to the ballot box, boys!!

You call me out for using a public policy blog that has no overt bias...and follow up by suggesting I get my info from a comedy news show that overwhelmingly goes after the right wing, hosted by a self-confessed left-winger.

That's cute.

lol nice. It actually held up quite decently. The shot seemed a little off but the second one did hit it dead on based on the gash in it. But since it's so light it just goes flying instead of absorbing energy. They'd have to hold it down better.

This is where living in the states could be fun, playing with guns. :D

It does seem wasteful to do this though, but maybe it's a defective one, maybe he works at apple or something and he managed to get permission to keep a defective unit as long as he proves it gets destroyed, or something.

I like to scoop things, and bread doesn't scoop very well. I will conceed to the notion that bread can be a nice additive to soup, too.

Here's an idea - if you don't like the video, don't watch it, don't bitch, do something else. If you do like it, then watch it, share it, etc.

Oh BOOOOOO HOOOO HE BOUGHT AN IPHONE 5 AND SHOT IT BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. HE'S A WASTEFUL ASSHOLE!

It's HIS money. He can do with it as he likes. I would LOVE to see some of you high and mighty people spend money only on your basic needs with no waste, while donating the entirety of surplus income to charity. You also have absolutely no idea what he does with the rest of his money, maybe he is extremely charitable and volunteers his free time helping the needy.
