iPhone 3GS - expectations met?

my expectations were somewhat low to begin with, so yes, they were met. i definitely saw enough of an upgrade in specs and hardware features that i will be upgrading. a macro-capable, auto-focusing camera that also does video is enough on it's own to make me do it.

I'm a life long anti-Apple person and after spending a good 30-60 minutes each with the Pre and then the iPhone 3G I decided to preorder a 3GS based largely on Anandtech's hardware comparison. The input lag issues were the only problems I really encountered with the 3G and that should be resolved with the updated hardware. The apps available on the iPhone are really much better and as much as I hate Apple, two years later they still have the best phone available for web browsing and applications.

It was close enough I probably would have bought the Pre if they actually had any available, but since they didn't I sold out to the dark side. No way I'm wearing a god damn turtle neck though and I already ordered a solid case to cover the damn Apple logo (and my shame).

The turtle necks are actually quite comfy. Before long you will come to realize you had that elitist snoop in you the whole time. *looks around and realizes what forum section he's in*

I went into an Apple store and discovered they do not like to be asked technical questions, they will out right run away from you. I also was looking for one of those real simple iPhone docks where you plug the the sync cable into the back and you can just set your phone in it...$30 @ Apple store, $35 at BestBuy WTF! You know I figured I could pick up some of those Apple toys, but damn, I'm gonna break the freaking bank. I think this is going to be the hardest part of the whole iPhone 3GS, it the accessories.

it totally hit everything and then some. Now I want it in my hands to try tomorrow. Anyone have a guess what time they'll release it tomorrow?

I've read several articles that state the iPhone 3GS is coming to Verizon, next year. I'm trying to learn more, but if true this might make me hold off on buying my 3GS on the 19th.

I doubt it unless ATT screws up big time.

It didn't make my coffee this morning...but I still like it...

If you ask me they should've come out with the 3G off the bat and then released the 3GS, or skipped the 3G entirely... /shrug I dunno why they're even tying the OS releases to new hardware revisions, no reason to, 'specially when they're releasing the new OS to older models as well. 3.0 is long overdue.

They're gonna have a hard time making developers cater to the faster 3GS with 2/3rds of the installed base still using the older/slower models, even by the time they release the successor to the 3GS. It's still nowhere near the perfect smartphone for me, I'll never buy a phone that doesn't have either an expansion slot nor works as a mass-storage device out of the box. Gotta have one of the two.

It's met all my expectations except the 3G service seems to be kind of spotty/sketchy.

I went to AT&T's site and looked at their 3G coverage viewer and my whole town is saturated in dark blue. However 3G doesn't always work.

I don't know if it's just like this because of release or whatever but it shows my town getting full coverage so either they're lying or something else is going on here.

I love all the rest of the features, they're great.

I wish they would go to Verizon. ATT blows.

I agree but all the US carriers pretty much have us by the balls. They all seem to find some way to rape our wallets in the end. *shrug*

I literally just got my 3GS though and it's going to be nice using one device finally for everything. Now I just need to find something to do with the 4 MP3 players.

Real happy with my 3GS. Speed is great..no waiting or lagging going between apps. Really nice. Sold my 3G this morning for $300 which paid for my upgrade. Sweet!

Just got it, my first Apple product since my old Mac IIfx, and I am still in a bit of shock at what a step up this is over my HTC "Mogul" on Sprint. The 3gs not only pulled a 11 year sprint customer away, but the experience has been extremely pleasant. I ordered a new service online... had my 32gb black phone delivered to my home on Friday, and I was up and active within 5 minutes. I've called AT&T a half dozen times this week and every call has been answered, courteous and resolved. AT&T gets panned for its customer service but compared to what I went through with Sprint, this is a breath of fresh air.

Really, the only negative has been the cost of AT&T's service plans, I'm pretty much paying double what I used to pay Sprint. On the other hand, I feel as though I am getting 5 times the phone. It's fast, polished, and exudes quality. It's consistently responsive as well.

I had lunch with a friend with the original phone and we compared. The original non-3G phone, slow data aside, seemed especially responsive as well. I cross-shopped against the Pre but it took 5 minutes with the Pre's somewhat loose hinge and unmanageable keyboard to bring back every memory of the Mogul.

My only real regret is that the 3gs and its brethern are about a year from getting supplanted by OLED devices in a big way. I've owned OLED longer than most (my Motorola Timeport still works) and have been waiting for the day that high resolution pixel OLED displays would show up on devices like the iPhone. My 3gs screen is just fine--perhaps better than any mobile screen I've worked with today--but I know OLED is a gamechanger in a similar fashion to how SSD is changing the storage game in a fundamental way.

im thinking about selling my htc fuze to pick up used 3g..?? also can you do SMS text using DATA with some sort of APP?

There's a few jailbroken apps that allow you to send texts without having a plan. There also may be some actual apps in the app store that will allow you to send texts but I'm not sure since undecided to let AT&T rape me for an additional $20 to get unlimited texting. Sigh.

Really wish companies would let you sub your minutes that will probably never get used to texts. Wishful thinking I know.

There are some apps in the app store for this, but the full feature ones cost and have yearly up keeps. Jailbroken ones don't, same for the voice nav apps, the ones you get when the phone is jailbroken are still free. Really good reasons to actually Jailbreak and one of the main reasons Apple hates it.

I made the switch from Verizon. I use to knock on the Iphone but I was wrong. Love the phone so far and glad that I waited for the 3GS.

Typing from my 3G S right now. It's so freakin awesome. My Mogul is archaic in comparison. Nothing negative to say at this time other than being raped by AT&T after coming from the Sprint Sero plan

My ass is still sore over that too. But upgrading from the Moto Q (worst phone I've ever owned) to the iPhone was like night and day. I'll definitely miss my Sero rate, but I can afford to pay for a different plan now. Everytime I called Sprint to make even minor changes at all to my account they said I'd have to drop the Sero plan.

What's funny is, I paid $70/mo for my plan with Sprint, but now with my iPhone I pay $75, but since I don't pay for insurance on the phone, my bill is almost exactly the same. :) Not to mention the HUGE upgrade from my Treo 700wx. Sure I don't have insurance on it like I did before (no one offers lost/stolen/water damage, a few 3rd parties offer physical damage coverage tho), but that's just the way it goes on the iPhone. Apple Care will do for now, and that's not monthly. :)

But yeah, phone's been great.
