iPhone 3GS - expectations met?

Yes to both of the above, the case has a special water and oil resistant coating now compared to the 3G. The glass is more environmentally friendly this time around also.

Augh that is a bummer, was hopping for some metal in the casing.

Yeah, I've had my 3G replaced 8 times now as of today for cracks in this terrible plastic. I hope that coating helps some, but I'm not holding my breath, I'm going to still buy AppleCare for it.

Yeah I'm really bummed out about it, so many cracking due to the plastic makes me a bit hesitant. I just hoped they modified the plastic to be stronger or something!

lol, i bought the white 3G because I thought the fingerprints would be prevalent on the black model. I'm kicking myself since I started to notice the cracks in the plastic, which look terrible on the white model

you guys must've had some flimsy 3g's mine fell of a roller coaster at 6 flags (it was raining too) in october and survived with just a crack, which finally just last week developed into a more pronounced chip at the bottom.

it is true that it's not prevalent in all 3G iphone however there is a good amount of people who develop these cracks due to the crap plastic.

I think it is lame. Especially since the main new feature (7.2 HSPDA) is not even going to be rolled out completely for a few years...by then the next iphone will be out anyways.

-New OS...Available on others as well
-Better Camera....Still sucks badly overall
-Compass.....What? Ya..I can honestly say I have never wanted or needed a compass in my phone.
-Faster Speeds/Processor.....Ok, maybe usable, I dunno...seems kinda lame if they are gonna bone the rest of the iPhone/iPod user base with apps that dont work really well on them now.

WEAKSAUCE is all I can say.

Where have you seen pictures taken from the camera? So you are saying Apple should not make the phone faster? that it should stay slow?

Don't get so defensive. All he's saying is that it's a very mediocre improvement over the current 3G, and he's right. If I owned a 3G, I'd probably feel the same too, but as it stands now, I'll be getting GPS, 3G, and a faster CPU out of the deal, so I'm not that bummed.

Wow, apparently you still can't flash iPhone firmwares on 64-bit Windows Vista. Restoring on my Mac OS X right now. My brother freaked out, thought he bricked his phone.

That's good to know, all my machines are almost exclusively Vista 64.

Will be keeping my 2G.

What? Works fine for me.

A friend of mine went apeshit over the 3GS announcement:

Now onto that fucking JesusPhone nonsense. Dear Steve, please for the children, PUT A FUCKING FLASH ON YOUR STUPID HIPSTER CAMERAPHONE. Before I strike again and kill.

There are two reasons I dont own a JesusPhone. First, the lack of a fucking 99 cent part to give the stupid piece of shit a flash. Second, the fucking retard powers of your US cell partner, ATT.

I've never used anything but Vista64 with mine and everything has worked fine.

this will be my third iPhone and I can't wait. Apple has always been on the expensive side but they do make good stuff.

i dont get how so many have gotten cracks in their phone. The most mine has ever got was scratches, and thats even when i chucked it against wood (dont ask :p) And as for the colors, are the scratches really visible, well anymore visible than they are on the black 3G? Im probably gonna get the white version of the 3G S to change it up this time, but will only do so if i can only see the scratches when i hold up the phone to light like in the black model.

More importantly, what's the difference?

Just buy a new piece of plastic, disassemble the phone, and replace it if it's so bad.

Getting scratches on the screen itself is MUCH worse, it requires you to replace glass, digitizer and LCD because they're all glued together.

No front facing camera for video iChat, booo!

But the openGL/graphics was pretty sweet. Wonder if the rumors from last week are a bit true with a build in graphics chip. Then again it could be that they don't wanna make it that you have to have the new iPhone to play games, they don't wanna make old owners feel left out.

i'm almost 100% sure the iPhone has had an OpenGL chip in it since day 1...... X-Plane 9 for instance is an OpenGL app. NFSU wouldn't work w/o OpenGL; it would look like all of the other cell phone versions.

It does, did some reading and learned a bit more about OpenGL CE 1.1 and 2.0.

Just got confirmation that my pre-order ships on the 18th. Free overnight FedEx, so if all goes well I'll post pics/comments on the 19th. :D

The only thing that concerns me is AT&T. Meh,

I would go with finding a way to purchase a legit (not jailbroken) unlocked version directly from Apple outside the US. T mobile is definately the best network (and only other one in America) that can handle the Iphone and is the best way to go (No 3G though just edge)

Right, but who has diamonds jingling about their iPhone?

The camera itself is very impressive, in that you can focus on exactly what you want even with autofocus, just by poking it. That doesn't even exist on high end Canons, granted you get a real lens with those.

I wonder if I can sync my BT keyboard with the new iphone, lol.

What crack are you smoking? If you think Tmobile has the best data network, I want some of that shit.

I know, depending on where you live, AT&T / T-mobile have their issues. Personally, in the Tampa Bay area, T-mobile's voice and data services are weak. They're coverage in voice is crap as well.

I've had AT&T for the past 8 months and haven't had a complaint minus the bill I get every month.

I remember reading an article to this effect a few weeks ago. It said the average iPhone uses something like 50MB/month of network, which far exceeds what AT&T planned around, and is really congesting their now-oversold network.

lol, I typically use 500 MB per month on average. I check 5 different email accounts and stream a lil music over Flycast, but thats about it. I did the whole tethering thing back in the day, but jailbreaking always seemed to make my phone run slower. Since I use mine for business, I restored it back to 2.2.1.

Personally, I wasn't expecting much as the new OS is going to be the best thing. A speedier CPU and battery life are a BIG PLUS to me as I typically drain my battery depending on how busy a day I have.

im getting it--this change is the biggest to date imo
50Mb hahaha i use so much more

ordered one today. also, i brought my 3G in to an apple store today because of a crack in the plastic near the mute switch, and they replaced it no problem. the genius guy (and i know, it's a genius) admitted that the cracks have been a problem in the 3G model, which have been fixed in the new 3GS model. hopefully that's true and i won't need to kill him.

i may try to take mine in. It's cracked at the bottom, but I've also beat mine up a bit.

I wonder if I can sync my BT keyboard with the new iphone, lol.

Unfortunately none of the iPhone models support the correct (I believe it is HID - Human Input Device) bluetooth profile to allow an external bluetooth keyboard. :(

Anyone know if I can put the metal rear part from a iPod Touch onto a iPhone?

well, unless you can add a hole for the mute switch (touch doesnt have it), a new hole on top for the headphone jack (touch is on bottom), and move the sleep/wake switch hole to the top right (touch is on the top left), add speaker, mic, camera, and sim card holes too. then plug all the unused holes. :p

I understand where you are coming from though. I MUCH prefer the first gen aluminum look of the iphone to the plastic cases that are now on the 3G and new 3GS iphones.. I have owned 2 aluminum and 2 3G iphones, and the aluminum also wears better than the plastic; it is much more durable

I'm quite happy with the specs and everything on the new phone. I would have been happy with the current 3g phone but my wife and I bought our 2g phones like two weeks before the current 3g phone was announced...so we just waited until this generation iphone came out. So we ended up pre-ordering ours yesterday...and we can't wait to get them. :)

I've read several articles that state the iPhone 3GS is coming to Verizon, next year. I'm trying to learn more, but if true this might make me hold off on buying my 3GS on the 19th.
