iOS 7 Discussion

Despite all the bitching and moaning, iOS 7 adoption is outpacing the adoption rate of any other major release of iOS to date.

I will be totally blown away if the iPhone 6 due next Summer, is still 4", just no way I see them keeping that tiny wristwatch size still, in the year 2014. I would bet at least they bump up to a 4.3" size minimum, keeping the same height as the current 4", just making it a bit wider now.

I recall last year, before the iPhone 5 release, reading several news stories that Apple was heavily looking into Sharp brand made smartphone screens @ 4.3" size. Was going to be a massive billion dollar deal. But who knows, that could of been typical rumor BS, but there were a lot of sites covering that story. Oh well just gotta wait a year, see what happens.

Sure, but that doesn't really mean anything. It's been a long time since the last meaningful update, and there are a LOT of iPhone 4, 4s and 5 out there, plus all of the new 5S and 5C being sold.

That's adoption rate expressed as a percentage of all devices running iOS 7, not expressed as the number of devices running iOS 7. And that's before the consumer availability of the 5c and 5s.

If I had a penny for all the fucks I don't give about the rest of the world...

That's nice.

Yes, it changes the color of the glass and the desktop wallpaper. That's not the same thing as, say, completely eliminating the glass and altering the manner of interaction with the OS. That requires shell replacement at a minimum--again, third party utilities.

This is also a complete sidetrack from the original point, which is that the level of customization offered in iOS is not significantly out of line with those of other OSes. The only difference is that we have three loud posters who think they're being clever by making My Little Pony references to convey their extreme dislike of the visual design.

Hey! You're not allowed to bring facts into this discussion. :p

You can choose new Aero (with glass) and new non-Aero (Without glass) themes, you can also choose Windows Classic theme which changes the window treatments completely. You can also change icons.

Being able to turn off lame transparency is a big plus in windows that AFAIK you can't do in iOS 7. You are stuck with that lame gimmick on permanently.

To get a more extreme transformation, you need to download something third party. But so what. At least that is an option.

When Apple does something objectionable, you are stuck with it.
Don't like lame transparency gimmicks: Too bad.
Don't like flat line drawn icons: Too bad.
Don't like Pastel/Neon icons: Too bad.

We're going in circles now.

Apple is like a parent to their little kid at dinner time. "You get what you get, and don't get upset" We know what's best for you, don't question us. There is only one thing for dinner tonight, and that's it, take it or starve.

Apple releases really bring the theater.

What carrier do you have that won't let you switch devices?

So:
If Apple introduces objectionable UI elements, your only recourse is to abandon the platform?

If Google introduces objectionable UI elements, you can just change them.

One of those options sounds a lot better than the other.

Sounds like the decision for which platform to go with is pretty clear-cut for you, then! Different users have different preferences and priorities for their devices, and it's great that everyone can find a platform that suits their needs, isn't it? For someone who's not into iOS, you sure spend a lot of time thinking and talking about it.

So after playing with iOS 7, I think I may want to go back to 6. Performance isn't so hot on iPhone 4. Is this still an option, or have they already stopped signing iOS6?

I am done bitching about the 'My Little Pony' update, I mean iOS7 :p Just teasing.

The iPhone is just not my cup of tea lately, it is a great phone for certain people, and glad it works for them, my older Brother being one of them, he tried Android, but says the iPhone works better for him, and just likes the form factor better. I admit the iPhone is a great piece of hardware, very well designed, and high quality. But for me, I prefer a larger screen, widgets, and customization, but that's just my opinion. But for millions and millions of people the iPhone is the best, and good for them. Having choice is a good thing.

My dream would be a 4.5" screen, and most of the Jailbreak options / settings default in the stock iOS. Maybe one day...

This is my last post in this thread.

But I will say out of my circle of people I know, family, extended family, friends, coworkers, clients, etc... Surveying a over a hundred people over the past year, I see the iPhone has definitely gravitated towards the Milf's and Grandparents the most. I see 30 year old Moms, and old Grandmas and Grandpas with the iPhone now the most.

Majority of the guys I know from ages 20 to 50 are on Android, BlackBerry, or Windows Phone, the most, and iPhone dead last with that age group and gender.

Where as two years ago, it was 80% that whole group all had iPhone's, now I see just the older women the most sticking to the iPhone.

Very unscientific poll :D

Cut the crap and keep the thread on topic. Any more personal attacks or thread crapping WILL result in more serious consequences. This is your final warning.

Thank you :)

Ha! You liar! j/k :)

But I'm not sure I totally agree with your unscientific poll. Aside from the guys in my Enginerring school almost every guy I know or see around town has an iPhone. In fact I remember a few days ago after reading an article about Android's market share being so high that I thought for sure it had to be a mistake. I guess I'm in the only city in the world that is clearly dominated by iPhones :/

Should I update my iPad 3 to iOS7? I saw a few videos and to be honest the new look isn't that attractive and things like control center don't really much much on a iPad which isn't a phone.

The thing that bothers me though is how many people complained of lag. I'd rather not update if it means a slower experience.

I wouldn't really recommend it. What used to be butter-smooth animations now seemingly run at half speed and really ruin the experience.

Not on my 5S. Butter smooth is exactly what I would call it.

Yeah, the animations are quite a bit slower on my iPad 3. Makes it frustrating.

Here's one thing I will say that I love about the iPhone. No Verizon branding ANYWHERE, no Verizon apps that I can't delete, no Verizon bookmarks in the browser that I can't delete, and no Verizon intervention with software updates. It's a thing of beauty.

So, I just found something that was REMOVED:
Picture Frame mode on the iPad. before, form the lock screen, you could hit one button and a slideshow would play of a particular album of photos. Now, you can't do that. In order to do it, you have to dive into your photos app, into the albums, into the album you want to play. Plus, it doesn't save your slideshow settings, so every time you launch it, you have to tell it what transition to use.

PLUS, it doesn't loop. If you have 50 pictures in your album, once it shows all 50, it's done.

GODDAMNIT, Apple.

The only thing I have found useful is when you switch between apps you can see them not just the icon. Everything else so far is just cosmetics.

After a reset it seems that the lag isn't soooo annoying as before so I am trying to make myself like the iOS 7. Had higher hopes for sure so it's better to keep your iPad 3 in this present state

After using IOS 7 for a while now I have to say, on the 4s it is flipping slow and laggy.
Every time I press something there is a little lag time now.
The 4s was pretty snappy on 5x 6x, but this is teh suck.

For me, iOS 7 on the iPhone 4 has been the reverse. It makes a bad first impression. It's noticeably slower, but over time it has seemed to quicken a little. Weighing it in my mind, I think as cool as it is that Apple moved iPhone 4 over to the new OS - that they probably should have left it out of the update. This is probably the only real pet-peeve of mine with Apple. They refuse to let you go back on an operating system update after a certain time frame. I should have probably done it earlier this weekend to fully evaluate whether or not I want to stay, but to intentionally lock those of us on older hardware into the newer, slower (at least for our devices) operating system is annoying. That said - at least it isn't like the iPhone 3G on iOS 4 fiasco.

iPhone 4 / iOS 7 summary: New look with some transparency/blur filters. The phone performs a little slower than it used to, but is still functional. Battery life, amazingly enough, seems to be better with the new iOS.

At this point, I wish I could go back to iOS 6. Oh well.

I looked over iOS 7 new features and I don't see anything compelling other than new Safari, which everyone says is buggy.

It's funny, they made everything flat, added a ton of animations to now make the UI feel different, and it ends up adding lag. I think its a beta build thats not at all finished for iPad and not optimized.

I don't get facetime audio. Why not just make a call and use speakerphone?

Costs minutes. Facetime over WiFi doesn't use minutes. You can also use it to "call" people on an iPod Touch or iPad. It's awesome and should have been there from the start.

Ah. So it's skype audio calling, for free. But only to iOS users.
But it uses data. What kind of data rate does it chew through?

Not sure yet, since the audio-only option is so new. I'd expect it to be similar to the data used by Skype or Google Voice though.

My biggest gripe so far is how iOS7 enforces the use of overpriced Apple cables. I have an extender doodlebobber so I can dock my iphone with a bulky case - but now since it's not "Apple approved" it wont' work. So frustrating - mostly because Apple doesn't offer an equivalent doodlebobber...

Is dooblebobber the technical term? :p

Apple has a Lightning accessory approval program for third parties. They aren't trying to force you to buy their cables—they don't even sell the kind of extension cable you want—they're trying to avoid incidents like this.

Free, and usable by anyone who has an Apple ID and a Facetime capable device, including a Mac. This used to be called convergence.
