Ok, I had a AMD XP2400+ system, but that went to my wife in short order. I got about 2 weeks of use outta it. Great system, stable, fast, no issues.

So now, I was sitting there, ready to pull the trigger on a new system (My Intel 1.6@ 2.4A is showing its age).

I was fixated on the X2 3800, but then I saw the Opty scoring. I'm in, I'm sold, I'm joining the dark side for my main rig for the first time in my life. This is probably my 6th PC in 15 years, and here she is for everyone to drool over *spec speaking that is, no pics yet*

Opteron 165 OEM from Monarch
Antec P180
Enermax EG565
DFI LP UT 4 Expert (being an old Abit bios user for many revisions, this appealed to me, for the obvious reasons)
2GB G.Skill PC4000
HD's ranging from 120-160GB (I have about 3-4 that will make their way to the case).
eVGA 7800 GT 256MB

I'll post pics when everything comes after the holidays.

This is me, coming from an Intel @ 2.4, with a 9800 Pro, 1GB, and a Abit IT7 Max2 V2 (Awesome board, never could fault it, stable as you could ask for).

With that said, any caveats to be wary of. I haven't bought the HS yet, and I see all the various mentions of this and that, I'll probably go with a XP120 and if I can, I got some old Sanyo Denki 120 x 38mm that flow 102CFM @ 39db :) Having a box of 30 of these is nice by the way :p

My goal, is not to get the most out of the chip as humanly possible, its to get the most out of the chip at a stable point. If thats 2.4, great, if thats 2.6-2.7 awesome, if its higher, well then I got the rag to clean up the mess :D

My PC room is frigid, by frigid I mean the ambient is about 50F (yes, its freezing in my damn basement :( ) So I think that will keep the temps down some :)

We arent the dark side, we are the light side ;) intel is the dark side with their evil monopoly and hellishly hot chips and consumer mind control :p

May want to think twice about the DFI Expert. I've heard lots of horror stories about the board suddenly slipping the chip 3 Volts killing your nice Opty.

Do a google search, or check this link.

Yes, but it only appears to do that while you're deep cooling, like a cascade or phase. I'd still probably stick with a SLi-DR though, considering I'd cry if my 165 died from a sudden "whoops, 3v".

Full Folding Ahead!

So true. So true.
We only seem evil to those decieved by the un-holy intel. BTW nice rig to start your salvation with.

That board is great. It was what I used in my first build :). I sold mine to my uncle and now I'm in the process of trying to get it back off of him ;).

I hear INTEL's new promotion includes giving away indulgences to get into heaven if you buy a Dual Core Pentium from them ;)

Talk about making a promise you cant keep! Going intel is a double negative, you brun down your house AND burn in hell! (joining in the fun :p im neutral at heart  )

Looks great :D id advise an asus a8n-sli of some sort :p

Thanks guys for the insight.

By Dark Side I mean "good side" :) Just the darker side of life. The last 2 systems I bought were Dell servers, so the high end portion of life has been lacking to me for a long time. This is my first build in almost 3 years I'm thinking its been.

No, I'm not a OEM freak. For $249/ea you can't argue with a HTPC and a Linux server on the cheapie. This system I have now will be relugated to CD/DVD burning and MP3 server uses. (I have about 400GB in storage in it, and about a TB total in my home, I'm a media freak if anything, with MP3, DVD, Satellite on the PC, HDTV on the PC).

I need a new game PC though, and I figured if I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna go hardcore, spend as much as reasonably feasible, and get the best I can for my buck, that was Opteron 100% of the way. I'm worried about the whole Expert cooking CPU's story.

They were at stock voltage and settings, but it was not detailed if it was on air / extreme cooling. I'm just going air, and like I said. Considering what I been getting by with for a good portion of the past year w/o really many complaints, I think the increase in speed will be insane to me.

I suppose the only other thing I really need, is maybe a legit copy of Windows XP Pro at this point, even though Win2K has been good to me, its almost like its starting to show its age in many ways.

DFI boards can be picky about ram, so do some research or something, i'm currently going through "I hate this ram" hell with my dfi nf4 infinity....

thats what I thought lol...

...hey, if you're still looking for a HS, I have a Hyper6+ that I'd give to you cheap. :D

It's not nearly a *drool* system, but it looks decent. :) I'd stay away from the DFI board unless you are really into tweaking. Stick with an A8N SLi Premium or the new MSI board.
