id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

Not exactly surprising,eh.I mean Nvidia does have better Open GL drivers and the game was developed with Nvidia hardware in mind from the start.Anyways,I doubt I'll have any worse of a gaming experience then anyone else just because I'll have to run it at 1280x1024 with just 2xAA and 4xAF.I think what is most important thing is that it's going to be a fun game regardless of what settings you have to use and that's the most important thing right?I think to often that's forgotten and I really think people should keep that in mind because I will enjoy it myself either way, although I think ATI is working very hard to try to improve their Open GL drivers for this game. Also,I didn't buy my card for just one game, that would just be silly IMHO,but hopefully by the time there's any games using the Doom3 engine ATI would have improved their Open GL performance.

Keep in mind these are benches from id, not the [H].
And of course Id would taint the benchmarks so they can sell less games and make another company more money.

am I the only one that wished they would benchmark older video cards... 9800, 9700, geforcefxs and even geforce4s?

also, as someone else said... in systems withOUT 2gb and 4gbs of ram... maybe 512mb and 1gb?

not everyone spends $2000 on their pcs... the vast majority have a 2ghz PC with a 200 dll video card and 512mb-1024mb of ram

not a 3ghz pc, a 400 dll video card and 2gb of ram :/

while those benchmarks ARE appreciated (to see how most of us will be able to play doom3 in 2-3 years when we can afford computers like the ones used to benchmark), i'd like to see older systems being benched. thx.
Your wish is my command. How bout some GeForce3 cards too? And maybe an 8500 for funsies?

Yup, looks like Nvidia is better if you want to play Doom3.

ATi couldn't pull a good OpenGL driver out of their hat in time, too bad for ATi. Its obviously not a hardware issue, because it does so well in D3D (.

It is a hardware issue. Ultrashadow II is a hardware feature and it IS AWESOME. So is the 32x0 mode.

Don't be confident that their shiny new driver will be worth a damn.

Dont be confident that it wont be worth a damn. No one knows til they do it.

$300 beating a $500 card?
Link me a site that has a GT for 300 bucks, they are all being sold for 400-450 now

Try $399 MSRP, on the shelf at Fry;'s, CompUSA, and other REAL RETAIL STORES. Can't say the same for any X800.

ZenOps said:
As usual, probably absolutely nothing. They didn't even bother to use the websites that were hyping up the 9700pro when there were many benchies that were 300 percent faster Nvidia. ATi did not bother to advertise the 800XT beating out the 6800 in D3D either. ATi will quietly reverse engineer the OpenGL, and have a comparable speed driver a couple months down the road (but probably too late, as people will have finished the game by then)

Nvidia on the other hand - I'm sure will plaster the 15 percent FPS difference everywhere.

ATI has *never* been able to catch up to NVIDIA in OpenGL. That's why 6800 GT's are FASTER than X800 XT PE's in QUAKE 3 ENGINE GAMES.

Other way around. The latest nVidia hardware was developed with DOOM3 in mind. I'm sure Carmack told both companies what he wanted, and nVidia was the one the gave him exactly what he asked for.

In fact, I'm guessing nVidia bet the farm on DOOM3 for the 6800, and it looks like that may pay off bigtime, especially if ATi can't counter in the next couple weeks.

Why do some people feel the need to ridicule people because of what card they have? It's just ONE game people, yeah it's an important one,but it's not the end all be all of gaming.Like I said,I am going to enjoy it whether you want me to or not even though I have a crappy X800 Pro.

Face it. NVIDIA pwned ATI. Period. If ATI fans want to downplay this, THEN DON'T EVER MENTION FARCRY AGAIN. Otherwise, ADMIT IT. ATI's OPENGL DRIVER AND HARDWARE SUPPORT SUCKS.

6800 GT = 5.6 Gigapixels/sec fillrate

X800 XT PE = 8.3 Gigapixels/sec fillrate

GT beats XT PE in Doom3. ATI has COMPLETELY dropped the ball with OpenGL. ADMIT IT.

Oh, I know, it's just one game right? No other games will use the D3 engine that matter, only little insignificant ones LIKE QUAKE 4.

Not to add to the conspiracy theories, but I distinctly remember that Carmack originally stated that they were NOT going to write multiple rendering paths. When they discovered that the nVidia cards were performing poorly, he changed his mind, and wrote a new path for the nVidia cards. I can't remember all the details, but that might have a little something to do with it.

Now that I think about it, maybe it waws the 5900 series cards this was referring to? I really can't remember, and I can't be bothered to Google it right now.

I admit it. Completely. And like I said before, once we know whether the performance gap was entirely due to the OpenGL driver, or if it was due to some hardware problem, I'm fine with it.

The NV paths have been dropped. X800 and 6800 both run the ARB2 path.

There are only 4 paths in DOOM3 now.
nv10
nv20
r200
arb2(nv3x/r3xx, nv4x/r4xx)

Edit: Beat once again!

Wow..... you guys goo all nuts over these benchies :) Considering that doom 3 was developed with Nvidia cards in mind, I don't think anyone should be surprised it runs so well on them, Though im probably getting a GT anyways cuz of value vs the x800pro

People are crazy man. I am getting a 6800GT and am happy about it. I think and hope you will have a kickass time playing DOOM3 and lots of other games on your X800pro. It is a sweet card and so is the 6800GT why cant people just be happy with what they have, and be happy for other people that are lucky to have any of the high end cards. Best of luck and good gaming. :D

Its cute we have the fanboys out in force drooling and slobbering in a benchmark in ONE game, funny im pretty sure its the same kids who were tooting their horn about the 1.2 patch for farcry giving nvidia the performance lead..which never happened. Wow nvidia is ahead by a measly 20fps in ONE game, ....we'll just forget about the fact that in d3d ATi practically stomps all over nvidia.

We'll see what results come forth when the game is actually out to buy, driver upgrades are going to improve performance for both cards and if ATI is making a completly new ogl driver then that should lead to better performance.

I really can't stand the insinuation that Doom3 was written to run on Nvidia hardware.

^^ what he said.

ATi was not cheated here, they shot themselves in the foot by having sucky ass OpenGL support on an architecture they've had 2 years to write drivers for.

That is what he told me when I asked him that on Tuesday afternoon.

I am no fanboy but I think you need to read the latest Hard review on the 6800GT, cause you sound kinda uninformed.

Probably right in line with a 9800pro/XT or just above. (I'm guessing here  )

I haven't bothered to read the entire thread...

but I do want to point out that ATi's OGL drivers already are behind Nvidia's OGL drivers by what? 30% ?

I'm actually amazed that ATi's offerings were able to get even that close to Nvidia's given how heavily Doom3 is built around OGL.

It's my opinion that ATi is going to need to do a complete re-write of the OGL acceleration for Catalyst in order to remain competitive, as well as dropping prices and introducing a Radeon X800-GT type card. The excuse that frame-rates are so high nobody can tell the difference doesn't exactly hold out of Q3A based titles. Whether or not ATi does so will heavily influence my next purchase.

EvilChris I wish I could predict the future as perfectly as you and know that Nvidia cards will alwya be the best card for all OpenGL games in the future. How badly did Nvidia beat ATI in Q4?

I think it's equally cute that after getting bitch slapped in the doom 3 benchmarks the ever hopeful ATi fanboys insist on downplaying a massive loss in the biggest game of the year and point to a new driver. After 2 years of optimizing the driver for this architecture, ATi will suddenly and miraculously be able to put out an OpenGL driver that doesn't suck ass.

I'm not saying it ain't gonna happen, I'm just saying take your lumps like a man. There's nothing you can say to counter the ass beating ATi took today, so why try? It just makes you sound desperate.

JUST YOU WAIT! ATI's mystical new OGL is going to improve D3 performance on X800 Pro by 100% to CATCH the GT! LOL! ( as if ATI CAN EVEN WRITE A DECENT OGL DRIVER ). 5 years isn't enough time?

They have been better than ATI in OpenGL since the beginning and evidence today shows that isn't stopping. NVIDIA, btw, had the 1st consumer OpenGL ICD for an enthusiast card ( RIVA 128 )

Why does no one here realize that this is one single set of benchmarks? There is more to a game being rendered than just the engine that is being used. By your remarks you are saying that all future D3 based games will have the exact same FPS as Id just showed as that drivers arent able to drastically improve performance.

Don't forget, XT PE has almost 3 gigapixels/sec more fillrate than GT and still gets owned. ATI's OGL is PATHETIC.

I'll bet you a coke ATi will get its ass kicked in Q4 too. It's called a reasonable assumption. You don't have to be a fortune teller to know that a game based on the same engine will have similar performance, you just need an un-biased brain.

NV wins in all Q3 engine games, from Quake 3 all the way up to the SMASH HIT Call of Duty, a Q3 engine game.

So you say ATI will improve with drivers, and catch NVIDIA? What, NVIDIA's driver won't get better too at the same time, INCREASING THEIR LEAD? You act like NVIDIA's performance is static.

crappy x800 pro? just because it benched 20+ fps below the 6800gt during 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF does not mean its a crappy card. i'm sure if you knocked the settings down to 1600x1200 2xAA 2xAF or 1280x1024 4xAA 8xAF it would become much more playable. a x800pro is still a great card, but it looks like the 6800gt is a greater card for doom3.

How many times can you say the same thing, when people are AGREEING with you? Jesus Tapdancing Christ, we hear you, and WE AGREE WITH YOU. MAYBE if I type IMPORTANT words in ALL CAPS, you'll UNDERSTAND ME!

All we're saying is that OpenGL is something that can be improved. Can it be improved enough to take the lead? Probably not, but it will be improved. But if there is a hardware flaw, then that's something to take a little more seriously.
