id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

I've been watching reviews and benchmarks in order to decide which card to buy. I love Hard OCP's "Real World" benchmarks. Haven't the previously benchmarked games been a few ties and a lot of x800 xt wins? I guess if DOOM 3 is the only game you want to play it is a no brainer, but all other current games seem to be better played on an x800 xt. I remember a one or two resolution bump in a Hard review. Am I wrong? I'll make a few bucks selling my on the way $434 x800 xt on ebay and buy an Nvidia, so I don't care either way. A rational opinion is all I'm looking for.

Very true, the only thing anyone can say for sure right now is that in the most foolproof, cheatproof, unbiased environment imaginable ATi got thier asses handed to them in the biggest game of the year.

And that's all that can be said.
Do you know what kind of cooling there ass had or did they cheat with some kind of water cooling?

Only thing i can think is theyve got a version or a command that overrides this...kinda takes away from the whole "hard capped" bit.

maybe the fps cap goes away during time demos? would seem like something logical to do

Even if you go for a one handed buttcheak sneak and not the old two hand grab both buttcheak grand!?

Yeah, even moreso, if you have a free hand, it may go for the ol' reacharound! The last time Kyle turned down a reacharound from a guy, the guy plastered pics of him flipping Kyle the bird while Kyle wasn't looking, lol!

The XT is a great card. HardOCPs reviews have changed lately with new driver releases so you might want to have a look.

Basically the XT is still marginally ahead of the 6800Ultra in my opinion. If you have one, I would hold on to it, it will do great in Doom 3.

If Doom 3 is huge for you and you don't mind the hassle, you will likely get better performance in doom 3 with the GT...but seriously, you already have one of the 2 fastest cards on the planet, might as well keep it.

I don't understand this attitude. If Nvidia can drag itself out of the mud after their last generation of cards and come up with their great Forceware drivers why would it be so impossible for ATI to improve their drivers? They aren't complete idiots I don't think, even if they did make a mistake of not having a card in between the XT and Pro that would be competivelypriced against the GT.

I never said that ATI couldnt mmake better OpenGL drivers. I just said it is funny how people are using the same arguements they hated before now that they need them.

LMAO! :D
I want to see kyle set up equal systems, one with ati and one with Nvidia and benchmark those short little pr0n vids and see what one makes the vids longer with better 2D. :(

WHen HL2 comes out we will all be doing the same thing all over again. IT was sometime last year I think that an interview said Carmack was going to limit the FPS to 60 because he either wanted players to appreciate the eye candy or to prevent fps cheating in the multiplayer mode. One of them was the reason, maybe fps is only hard capped in MP mode?

Yeah, your right about that, tit for tat I guess.I just think if you have anything after the 9700 Pro you should be able to enjoy the game and I also think that this game is too important and people have waited for it so long that ATI could be so stupid as to not improve their Open GL performance.

People have been bitching to Ati for years about improving their opengl. It's not like Doom3 caught them off guard! The game has been in development for years as well!! No excuse for Ati. They screwed up this time.

A 20fps difference in this case (50fps vs. 30fps) is a staggering 40% advantage in favor of the 6800 series. This cannot be downplayed.

Considering that this massive performance gap occurs with the biggest PC game release of the past few years, potential buyers definitely need to sit up and take notice. The DOOM3 engine will be used in a number of titles -- these results go far beyond 'one game.'

D3D performance between the two has largely been a wash (ie. <5% difference in performance), therefore the 6800 (specifically the GT) is the clear winner IMO.

Ok, I held back till now on my real opinion, now I have to give it.
I'm a man that believes in the old saying "history always repeats itself". I think this is the begining of the end for 3DFX....I mean ATI.
I love both ati and Nvidia but something has to give and if [H]ardocp.com is as big as I think it is, word will spread about the cheating and the framerate performance. I think Nvidia will be lining there pockets alittle more with ATI's blood.
Only my opinion and please don't take offense if you bought a ati card cause they are still better then what I have in my new machine....umm....nothing hehe :p

i was actually thinking the same thing about a MP fps cap that didn't effect SP. remember during quake MP when getting like 300+fps and characters started moving and acting faster. the fps cap would probably be implemented to stop something like this happening in the future.

Yeah they screwed up in a couple ways this time around, but look what Nvidia did this time around after having a pretty bad round last time. And remember where ATI was just a couple years ago?It wasn't pretty at all.I just think this just might be a reason for ATI to get their rears in gear seeing the hard cold facts that their Open GL really does suck compared to Nvidias.

I can definitely draw some parallel's between ATi and 3dfx, but to say that this is the beginning of the end is premature...ATi has been around for a long time, and they're not going anywhere any time soon.

I just read in the Shacknews comments that its server FPS that is locked at 60 to prevent physics cheats like jumping higher and longer like everyone does now at 76 or 320 fps.

It is now 11:30 at night and I have to be at work at 5 am. Time for bed. I wish the forums the best of luck bandwidth and Sendmail wise as I am sure the email server is getting pounded right now sending out all the reply notices.

I think one more cycle then ATI hangs it up and someone else will come out of the blue. :D

I don't think I would compare ATI with 3DFX though, the Nvidia cards may be better this round but it isn't like ATI is putting out crappy cards or broken hardware.Like I said,if Nvidia can come back with such a nice product this time around after the shit they had to put up with last time I just don't see why ATI couldn't do the same.

2 systems and 11 different video cards benchmarked thus far. . .WOW. That is a lot of hard work and considerable time and effort spent benchmarking. Thanks for the [H]ard work Kyle and keep up the terrific work.

I've always been a Doom fan, so I'm glad I got my 6800GT (and at $299.99, there's no way I could have passed it up at that price). But it's looking like I should start shopping around for another 512 megs or more of DDR RAM.

Very true and best of luck to them but wouldn't it be cool to see a new card company mix it up even more!?
God I miss my Geforce 3 GTS, that thing OCed so damn good and its still being used for CS in my X-roommates machine heh.

I agree,if I could have got a 6800GT for $300 I would have, but I had to settle for a X800 Pro for $315 and I am honestly pleased with it Doom3 be damned.I'm with you about the ram also,I really need to get another 512MB stick myself.

Anyone else notice the nvidia fans squawking the loudest about this test dont even have current hardware?

I guess anyone owning ATI hw should commit seppuko now.

Why does someone with a 6800 on a Barton 2500 think they are gonna blow someone out with an X800 on a faster machine?

Its the WHOLE SYSTEM, CPU, RAM and Vid card and sound card.

I cant wait till this thing comes out personally.

btw voodoo 3 kicked a tnts ass in quake 2....

been there done that.

went from there to a Geforce DDR, then to a Ge2, then ge3ti200, then a ti4400 then a 9700 pro then 9800 pro then x800 pro...every card better than the last one.

my x800 pro has been most gain in all of those upgrades in terms of overall performance.

I see what you are saying, I mean it really seems like ATi is going wide open, cutting corners, playing games with image quality, not supporting linux, not supporting multiple monitors, doing a half ass job with OpenGL, and all in the name of superior directx performance, which they are just BARELY holding on to.

So if things keep going this way, then yes, they'll be in trouble...but I don't think the r300 core was a fluke entirely...I think ATi will continue to stay competitive for the foreseeable future...

What ALL other current games? You call 4 or 5 games ALL other current games? Hard has been lucky to get more then 5 games included in their benches. They've just now included an OpenGL game which is City of Heroes.

The 6800's are faster then the X800's in EVERY OpenGL game. Not one. Not half. Every single one. And there are alot of popular ones like Call of Duty, KOTOR, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, City of Heroes, Neverwinter Nights, RTCW, IL2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles, and more.

There will be tons of games built off the DOOM3 engine because the engine is ID's baby and its perfect. It will run well even on slower machines which is one of the things that makes OpenGL better then D3D.

I can almost guarantee you that Doom 3 is going to be the biggest game this year. HL2 will be CLOSE but i dont think it will quite make it.

Quake 4, the Call of Duty Expansion, KOTOR 2, and many more are coming up for OpenGL.

The 6800's also support PS and VS 3.0, FULL FP32 color, UltraShadow II Technology, and alot better drivers IMO.

The 6800u and X800XT PE are tied for the performance crown in D3D. nVidia is leading the way in Linux and OpenGL support. It should really be a no brainer which card you choose. But maybe i just REALLY like nVidia :).

And i really feel ATI is doing some serious optimizing/cheating they shouldn't be and it wont be long before it comes out in the open.

There has already been alot of talk about ATI's brilinear filtering tricks to gain performance with AF.

ATI's Radeon X800 texture filtering game

http://techreport.com/etc/2004q2/filtering/index.x?pg=1

Whatever the merits of ATI's adaptive trilinear filtering algorithm, ATI appears to have intentionally deceived members of the press, and by extension, the public, by claiming to use "full" trilinear filtering "all of the time" and recommending the use of colored mip map tools in order to verify this claim. Encouraging reviewers to make comparisons to NVIDIA products with NVIDIA's similar trilinear optimizations turned off compounded the offense. Any points ATI has scored on NVIDIA over the past couple of years as NVIDIA has been caught in driver "optimizations" and the like are, in my book, wiped out.

There are certain things that wont show up in screenshots, but WILL show up in-game. DOOM3 is going to put GFX cards through the ringer and expose all kinds of new details.

No its gonne be BitBoys.

LOL - the really sad thing is: They made that whole uproar that their card could run Quake 3 at more than 400 frames per second, and it still is not released and will most likely never be released. And now ATI and nVidia have no problem running Quake 3 at more than 400 frames per second (at 1024 x 768 with no AA and/or AF). And now we're evaluating Doom 3 and its performance with the latest and greatest video cards. Now might be the time for BitBoys to say their card can run Doom 3 at more than 400 frames per second :)

Holy crap, 400 posts in 6 hours.

From the day the reviews the x800 came out, I could see that the 6800GTU was faster than the x800XT in more than 50% of games and if you'd ask me, I tell you that the 6800 was faster but it seems like there are a ton of ATI fanboys still holding on to the ATI is the leader logic.

All I have to say about the new cards is that they are damn expensive. At this rate, it will be at least 6 months before I buy a next gen card. Hopefully the Intel 1066MHz bus will come out by then so I can make it a full upgrade. The AMD64s are great but they cost too much.

actually what happened was, from what i remember reading, that they realized they didnt have the resources to do what they wanted to with that project. their pda and cellphone display technology was much further along, and could turn a profit faster. so thats the way they went.

by no means is that exactly what happened, but what i remember reading from the last bitboys article i read. im sure someone will jump in and clear it up

It just seems to me that they have had a secure hold on the performance lead for 2 years now. And in that time, what have they done with linux? or OpenGL? or multi-monitor support? And they didn't even come out with a new core this year. I just don't get it. In the same time Nvidia did some insane driver work with the NV3x series, built an entirely new core with all kinds of new features, developed SLI, did the Nforce chipsets. I mean seriously, what the hell is ATi doing with all thier time? Working on the Xbox 2???

I always got the impression that the X800XT was better in most games then the 6800Ultra and that the GT was/is better then the Pro.ATI really screwed up by not putting out a better card to compete with the GT at that price point, but aside from D3 they aren't that far apart and I'm happy with mine.
