id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

Yes, and I recommend that you not only see the trailer, but the "Icons" video, "The History of Doom3."

The footage is extremely creepy, and the Icons movie highlights some of the sound design. There is one scene in which a disembodied female voice cries out in a gravelly whisper, "They took my baby!"
I know what you mean. Man when I saw that clip where they had the Woman's voice saying "They took my baby" and the whole room turned red and stuff, I was like, "Oh man, this game is going to be creepy as hell" <--no pun intended, realized it while I was typing.

I can't wait, I've been meaning to do an upgrade for a long time, I think now is the time, I might just buy the game when it comes out and let it sit on my shelf until I get a new system. I highly doubt I will be able to hold out that long though.

Anyway, if nobody has seen the "Icons" video that was posted a couple pages back, watch it, it is awesome.

Well there is revolt for CoD (blatent rip off off CS) and Frag Ops for UT2004 (another really close rip off of CS minus the bomb) so I figure there will be a CS like mod sometime in the next 6 months.
I hate it when people call something a "rip off" I remember when other fps's came out after wolf3d/doom everyone was calling them clones at that time though.

Hey, just got back from playing Risk, lost the game on a friggin backstab lol. Anyways, yeah I was referring to the per poly damage model, it would indeed be way too cpu limiting to do per poly collision detection, however..... This brings up another issue, the collision detection in Doom3 is also the best I have ever seen.
As I remember it was best illustrated in two places in the Icon video. The first was relatively simple, when the imp drops down onto the stairs what I realized is as he took a step forward, one foot stayed on a higher stair wheras one came down two stairs for balance. Finally we won't deal with people gliding up stairs while some standard moving animation is played all the way, irregardless of a step's position relative to a foot.
Now secondly, and most impressive I thought, was when Pinky takes a shotgun blast to the head and slumps against a wall. The body starts desintegrating outward from the hit position. Now, initially, the head rests against the wall but as the body desintegrates, the model completely changes as the body gradually slumps further and further as the main part touching the wall dissapears, leaving only the mechanical hind legs. This was done in a completely beleivable way. Sorry if I'm not being to clear but watch the video and see if you can tell what i'm talking about.
And I just have to say, Doom 3 has the best animations I have ever seen, Fred Nilsson is a credit to id and has done an amazing job. The only animation I had an issue with, was as I mentioned, the shaking of the Archvile's head, it wasn't particularly bad, just sub-par compared to the rest of the game. The best examples I can think of, other than the monster movements, (pinky and the hell knight's approach most certianly qualify as terror inspiring) would be when the marine points in the direction you are supposed to go, and when the guy at the desk rolls his chair over to face the player in the cutscene.

True they did some awesome animations. The collision of other games arn't as good as doom 3 cuase they might have used collision plates (invsiable meshes that actually are the ones that physics is calculated on) Objects over 5000k polys is enough to crush a cpu to to per poly collision if ya have enough of em. I know in Unreal 2 and UT 2004 they used em for sure. Even in Far Cry for some of the higher poly models they used them aswell.

I have to agree with this, essentially, when we get down to it, every fps was a doom ripoff lol....

its a setting on the dl bar suicide, bits or bytes..you were getting half my speed.. get a grip guys

stick with kazaa then whatever I dont pay to dl videos, I pay mostly to get patches and demos the moment they come out, when everything else is swamped and overloaded,
Why should you even care?

I

You are correct I misread the pic thought it said estimated dltime 17 instead of 7 lol, but I wasn't replying to that so much as the "Lol.....you wait in line" quip, my speed was tacked on at the end to show that waitng in line still gets you decent speeds, I've never had to wait more than 40mins in line.... most patches i get from 3dGamers, never really bothered with demos.

Yeah, I have hated Fileplanet ever since they started their pay service.

RIP 3dfiles.com!!!

when the first patch for doom3 comes out how long do you think you will wait?

I guarantee it will be for a looooong time......

kids one of my favorite sayings, my own of course..

If its Free, you get what you pay for.

bwidth costs money...ask kyle....

Is anyone here even going to be able to get a 6800u/gt or x800xt so we can play doom3 without turning half the settings off? We shall see. Full detail and res only for me. 9800xt doesn't cut-it anymore - I won't even play FarCry because 1600x1200 isn't fast enough + I could be getting better detail/graphics with one of the new gen cards imo. *turns nose up*.

If Newegg's ETA is accurate, which I believe it is, I should be ording a GT tomorrow.

I'm in the UK, wont be getting it till a bit after every1 else.

What about Far Cry? Would the graphics look better on a x800xt than the 9800xt even though I'm already playing on full detail and res (1600x1200)[just not fast enough, hopefully the x800xt will give better graphics/detial]???

Has anyone said anything about the Warez aspect of Doom 3's release?

ID is going to loose millions of dollars to fags that will DL the game insted of paying for this worthy title. Any comments?

Most people who warez games would never have bought the game if they couldn't download it.

i have seen people download games just to see what they are like (you can't put much trust in a demo). plus if you want to play online then i recommend buying the game

I believe I read that it is five CDs! That is a lot of DL'ing!

That is just working way too hard to save $55, IMO.

The irony is, most of the ppl who will do this are kids who think nothing of blowing $50 on a PS2 game.

Too true ;) I feel if you Warez either Doom3 or [H]L2 :p You are only cheating your self because you aint gonna be able to play online anyways?

In my opinion, you would have to be a moron who deserves to be stoned to death, then brought back to life by an archvile just to be beaten to death by your own computer if you decided to get a Warez copy of such a monumental as Doom 3. However, I'm sure a lot of people will still do it, but then again they probably wouldn't have bought the game anyway. Eitehr way id has put a huge amount of work into this game and have brought a lot to the gaming community with it, you'd be a fool not to happily pay for Doom 3.

Ok, if i see a copy before the 3rd, I'll dl it, but I'm still showing up at the compusa midnight sale to buy the game, I mean, come on i want to play it that friggin much, but you gotta support id software. However, I doubt it'll turn up on the ftps's before then, id is always very protective of it's games, and ever since ati leaked the e3 executable, the lid has been really tight on everything. I doubt it'll hit the warez community before it hits shelves.

SIGH!!! I wish they had just put it on DVD, or made a SE like UT2004. Oh well we should be grateful we're finally getting the game now as opposed to next year.

Yeah, quite a few CompUSA's are having minight sales, also, a Gamestop near me are picking up copies of the game at 3am and expect to be sold out before they normally open. I think it would be more accurate to say that Doom 3 has 3 cd's.

Granted id will lose some money, it's pretty much inevitable, however, I 'd bet on there being a big enough quake, doom and wolfenstein community to help the game sell like hotcakes anyways. I do have to say that there is no reason to warez a game like doom3 and not buy it.

OK, a thread just popped up from Kyle concerning the Doom 3 [H]ardware guide, and all it says is:

Coming soon.......

How soon? Dammit, the wait is killing me! ;)

Same here lol. When I saw they would be benching my exact config cpu/mobo/vid wise i was like, heck yes I gotta see this.

Grrrrrr, Since this has essentially turned into a doom 3 thread, I have to say that it really sucks that creative is blackmailing id. Check out planetdoom.

Just thought I'd let everyone know, guru3d has some beta cat 4.8's that seem to provide a perf boost, including opengl.... doom 3 please run 1024 perfectly....... lol

Sheese, patenting algorithm's. Now I understand why eax was thrown into the doom engine. Funny thing is I remember reading about carmack devising an algorithm for lighting when doom3 was still in early development, found out it was patented and started on another.

Guess ill go out and patent binary searches.

I can't wait to see the shitty support they put in for eax...if I was id I would just make it suck ass on purpose...I've always hated creative...ever since my soundblaster live 5.1 platinum IR wouldn't work in windows xp...I'm quite happy now with my game theater xp...:)

Better patent fast and soon..

I hope I'm dead before I see the day when I gotta pay a company just to breathe air a certain way.

On the one hand, if id finds a way to screw creative, i gotta say, they're right, but I also think that John Carmack and id software have too much respect for the end user to let everyone with creative cards get a raw deal. The fact of the matter is almost everyone has a creative cards, no use denying it, and the cards themselves aren't half bad. That's the way it works, if Creative were releasing crap components, they wouldn't last long. Creative pulled a fast one, and are going to catch flak from the community for it, but I sincerely doubt id will hurt the gamers who buy their product just to spite Creative.
I mean, they could have released the crappiest support for ATI cards after they leaked the notorious "alpha", but they didn't. The only reason ATI's gets whupped by Nvidia is the opengl performance, and that's ATI's own fault for having crappy driver support.
I think id software is above hurting the gamers to spite a company, and I also have enough faith in the community to trust that Creative will get burned for this stunt.

Anyone else think it's kind of funny for a guy with the initials "J.C." making a game based on Hell? LOL :D

I've said it once, and i'll say it again, whats HUGE isn't DOOM 3 but all the many games that will be based off the D3 engine.

Look at all the games that were based off the Quake 3 engine.

ID's D3 engine is PERFECTION. It will run perfectly well on very low end systems and will also make high end systems crawl if you decide to crank the details to max. The visuals in D3 will be absolutely stunning.

Quake 4, RTCW 2, and Soldier of Fortune 3 are some of the games already announced to use the D3 engine.

Doom was the starting point for fps. It got everything rolling in this genre. DOOM 3 will be a hell of a refresher course :).
