id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

Heh, nice post, hadn't even heard about F.E.A.R., looks interesting, but I doubt the claim that it's on par with the doom3 engine. Though the difference might be purely stylistic. Looks like the games to exploit the new gen cards are going to start hitting shelves within a year. On the one hand I can't wait, on the other my wallet's already starting to feel the burn in anticipation...

well check out the videos (there insane). it looks like a combo of doom3/half lfie2/rainbow six has stylish bullet-time and melee as well as beautiful graphics and physics. definetly one to watch ;)

Looks like ATI pulled it off. The new OGL drivers improve performance in the doom3 alpha considerably, and I also got 20 more frames in Q3. Besides that I don't really have much else to test out OGL in.

4.8 Catalyst Betas:

They're not really 4.8, though, they're just calling them that. Someone leaked the drivers and compiled them based off of the 4.7s.. they work perfectly fine. People have reported performance gains in DX9 and OGL alike.

These better not be lame fucking driver cheats, too. both nVidia and ATI would be retarded to do this again as they must know the community would find out and expose it one way or another.

that is always a possibility im afraid in todays modern market :(

More on ATI and their OpenGL implimentation:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=17495

and regarding ATI cheating, a friend of mine came to me with the following:

heres speculation right now that ATI is using some AF cheat, as their algorythims for AF arent much different from Nvidias..but somehow smokes Nvidia with the same settings at higher resolutions...

There was some info on this and ATI, in a roundabout manner, admitted to doing something in higher resolution modes.

It looks pretty up in the air. when i tested out the Doom3 leak and Q3, i didn't use any AF.

if ati did get better OGL performance then this forum would be all like. ATI ro><orz my b0><orz in OGL and DX. nvidia are liek t3h su><0rz

Of course; who wants to pay 500 dollars for a slower card?

Yeah, posted about that a page or so back, didn't include a link though, i'm still iffy on what we're allowed to link to in the forums heh, but thought I'd let you know the unreal engine is also opengl based, which means improvements in ut and splinter cell pandora tomorrow. Mainly in Splinter Cell though, ut2004 is too cpu limited. At least for me.

UT2K4 doesn't even have OGL as an option, only D3D and software. I remember UT2K3 had an OGL renderer but it was a bit slower than D3D (probably because of my 9700 =P). Is there a way to use OGL in UT2K4?

I'd have to check again, but last I knew, the Unreal engine was opengl based, you don't choose a renderer, it's just the way the code works, the d3d hardware mode is still opengl based if I remember, I might be completely wrong, but the way the Engine's coded I think it was. Either that or it's the Unreal3 engine..... I distinctly remember that the unreal and the doom3 engines were the ones bucking the directx trend. And I'm considering it to be possible for the ut2004 renderer to be selected as d3d yet still be opengl in the background based on what i've heard of opengl 2.0... Again, I might simply be completely misinformed. If anyone can post something one way or the other I'd be interested in knowing.

unreal 3 engine must be D3D/Dx because of the use of SM3.0

check the re edit.

Off the top of my head I believe my friend was talking about something with the Unreal3 Engine and OpenGL but I can't totally remember...(I have a friend that works for them).

It does have opengl, its in one of the .ini files, just isnt as optimized as the d3d one.just uncomment opengl and comment d3d.

[Engine.Engine]
RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice

Afaik unreal3 is d3d.

As far as I know the engine has always been evolutionary, as in technically they took the original Unreal engine and modified it and modified it and modified it until they got to where they are today. But the original engine was Glide only if I remember and they worked in D3D and OpenGL support over time via patches. I was under the impression that UT2k3 was the first one natively D3D and that they were really dropping OpenGL. Me not know, I'm just a caveman...

You are partially right, they made the ogl renderer afterwards for PS2 and I think linux and mac support. 2004 engine was pretty much a modified 2003, just that they went from dx 8 to dx 9.

With the benchmarks, when they're fairly close, the small FPS difference doesn't really matter .

What matters is the image quality, if ATI or Nvidia has bettter image quality than the other then it's simply the better gaming card.

Unreal Engine 3 will also support OpenGL, and they are even working on makeing a level editor for GNU/Linux users. I got the info from the guy helping Epic port the engine, he runs the site icculus.org if you want to check out the stuff he does.

I watched those D3 videos posted earlier and am now reporting that I will not be playing Doom3. At least not until my balls descend down from my body cavity where those videos sent them...

... ahahahahaha you'd be the first one to say that

Hey I don't weigh much. A hearty demon roar belting out of my subwoofer would send me flying right into the kitchen where there are utensils and glass dishes...

LOL :D

Currently, the only thing that doesnt work in the OpenGL code that I can notice, is the license plat on the hellbender doesnt work. Mainly because they didn't code that. They developed the game with DirectX in mind that is true.

The original Unreal Tournament was Glide optimized. D3D and OpenGL came later (an absolutely fantastic OpenGL<>S3TC wrapper came much later) Pretty well kicked off the idea of texture compression, which most every developer uses now either directly to improve visual quality and speed, or as a fallback for compatibility with videocards that are lacking in memory. In Doom 3, its a fallback, In UT it was to improve visual quality and speed.

Just checked some facts, and it seems like Unreal would have to be opengl based given that it comes out of the box with linux binaries, and linux does not support directx. I know for a fact it emulates the d3d fog tables, but it seems like the backend would have to be opengl, can anyone offer more details? Also, was it just me, or did anyone else find the counterstrike source video singularly unimpressive?
Grrr, I want to see the Doom3 Hardware Guide lol, can't wait, they're benchmarking with basically my config in one case.

UT2004's engine, they same that ran UT2003 with updates, was mainly developed for DirectX, but OpenGL was also worked with to make sure people could use it if they wanted. This also allowed them to port it to GNU/Linux, anctually Icculus did the porting himself, including the AMD64 port. He also did the Mac port as well, which uses OpenGL. They made sure to have it there, but it was the second thing they tought about in rendering. you can tell because of the license plate missing on the hellbender for the OpenGL render.

yes i'm almost certain UT isn't based solely on OGL.. otherwise you'd think i'd be able to select the OGL renderer in UT2K4. and I do remember in the Unreal3 tech demonstration they talk a lot about SM3.0

BTW, what driver version are you using in THE guide for the 6800's? The 61.76's right? How come you guys didn't use the 61.76's in your latest BFG 6800U OC w/ Water Block review?

61.76's were not out yet at the time that review was done, 61.45 was the latest

In the guide we are using 61.76

First post after the guide got read? Can I just say a big Ha Ha to all the fools yelling and screaming over the last 153 pages? I'm very happy that my friends that cant afford crap will be able to have a great experience. Hooray for Id making it cool for the little guy. I almost think I see a shift in the gaming world coming, where people care more about the essence of the game as opposed to the pure look of it. System Shock2... crappy looking game, but man oh man...
