id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

from the benchmark it seems that this game engine runs better then the Farcry engine.

Since FarCry on High quality roughly gives the same FPS then Doom3 on High quality... only Doom3 will look even better then FarCry!!!!!! :p

I've got you beat. I'm 47 and didn't get my first system until early 2002. Heh, heh, heh. :D

After reading the benchmarks and registering for this forum, i was going to point out several glaring faults, but after reading the comments on this thread, i have realised i'd be wasting my time.

I hope you all enjoy Doom3

Goodbye

Well im not to proud to admit it  I just got Fuckin owned by Nvidia lmao :p I knew that ATI were going to have problems running openGL games but dam 20% from an X800XTPE what the hell are ATI up to?
Its starting to look abit like the FX fiasco in reverse and This time its the X800 Series being trounced?
Well there would be some pretty pleased 6800GT owners at the moment. And im glad i held out on getting a card.

and a BIG thanks goes out to Brent and kyle.Great review guys keep up the great work. This is why the [H] Rocks over all the rest ;)

yup im in the same boat. 6 months ago i spent 500 bucks on what is at best, a 150 dollar doorstop now.

I'm saving for 6800 UE 512mb (It should be out within next two months)
and also I know that doom3 it's just the beginning for the next generation of games on id new engine...so it's not so important for me to run it at full power at the time of release ..

The current cards are so weak (40-50 fps in doom3 wtf that so damn bad...It's not gonna last with me more than 6 months)

I think the reason a lot of people don't understand the huge stink over this ONE benchmark and ONE game is that they simply were not around at the beginning. A lot of younger gamers or newer ones don't really have a grasp of how important Id Software is.

Anyone who was a Duke Nukem 3D fanatic remembers when the demo for Quake was released. They also remember the first time they saw that game running GLQuake on a Monster3D card from 3dfx. It was one of those moments, when everyone, even people who don't play games all stopped what they were doing and watched the PC for an hour. And the whole world collectively said, "That's amazing."

Id Software was there when mainstream 3D accellerated gaming started. Even though there's a million other game companies, Carmack and Id still call the shots. His company is damn near the Elvis of computer games. There were games before, and games after, but Quake defined the genre forever. Even Valve and the Half Life team owe everything they are to Id and the Quake engine.

I'm not a fanboy of Id in particular. But you can't deny the history.

Totally agree I was around for those days, and they were some of the best days of gaming for myself. Does that bring back memories and make me realize I am getting older and not any younger..lol

Can we get an AMEN

my moneys on nvidia have optimised their drivers and ati havent, or atleast ati will be able to better ... im not gettign either card till both d3 and hl2 have been around for a while

Just cancelled my pre order with shopati.com

I was convinced the x800xt was going to be the top card this time round.

Going to wait for more benches before I make my decision now

hmm...i could swear somewhere in the rule stickies around here, that you should refrain from childish name calling...

It most certainly is and as you can tell some seemed to have forgotten that. However you can also see some have been given a vacation because of it.

There are rules in this forum and a warning posted at the top of video cards about Flaming other users, calling them fanboy's etc. I do not care how excited you are about Doom 3 benchmarks, I'm excited too. However if you continue to ignore the rules and posted warnings you will be gone. Also keep the posts to the thread's topic, the Doom 3 benchmarks and their results.

Has anyone at HardOCP tested the BFG 6800GT card on doom3? Carmack's overclocking warning got me a little worried that the BFG card may give me trouble since it's overclocked out of the box.

If it could give me problems, I might just buy the EVGA card and overclock it myself.

40-50 FPS @ 1600x1200 with 4xAA? WTF are you smokin?

This game pushes the limits of what we've seen graphics wise in a game. Much like FarCry has.

Not to mention the fact that this game does some pretty serious shadow calculations. This game isn't about "LOL 120FPS LOL" or twitch reflex gaming. It's all about the scenery and imersion.

Can we get an AMEN in the [H]ouse!!??
My immediate family (who probably represent most of mainstream america) thinks i'm a little too fanatical about my pc games. My wife god bless her, has finally after 4 years of marriage learned to accept it, most of the time. But even they were completly glued to the screen when I showed them the Doom 3 trailers. "I can't believe thats a game, thats amazing" they say.
There was a reason it took 4 years, but the wait is over.....Let the gibs fly

What's really funny is right after I found a CUSA store that had the XT/PE's in stock yesterday, I come back from a party last night and see the review. :D. The results were to be expected, but it still puts a tarnish on my excitement about my purchase. I really hope ATI works things out so that at least the XT/PE becomes competitive with the 6800U and not with the GT . Eitherway it will be good enough to run D3 at good res and the experience should be amazing. It's gonna get real interesting over the next 2 weeks at the ATI driver camp. I wonder if heads started rolling yet.

Maybe everyone will start buying the 6800 GTs and some of that elusive XT PE stock will build up so I can finally get one... :D

people need to quick panicing. the article said that the nvidia drivers were optimized for doom 3. give ati some time to optimize. this is a big blow to us ati users but i'm sure the gap will close some when ati optimizes there drivers.

well i wasn't a nvidia fan ? but i think im turning into one, i have a 9800 pro right now? its a great card, its fast? but it crashs like MAD i get ATI CRASH RECOVERY etc. every few hours, i've locked voltage/agpmhz, fiddled with them, overvolted undervolted NOTHING changes. i do get good performance but im kinda tired of it, and i never had a video card related crash when i had a nvidia card? i dont know i'd like to get a x800PE, but the 6800gt is just a great card for 400$, i wonder if my ati water block would fit it? (bdw just a side note, the water cooling helped me get my crash's down alot, but i never had the card oc'ed i had to get freaken water cooling just to run it at stock

I doubt BFG 20 mhz out of the box pushing it from 350 - 370 is anything to worry about

my guess is.......someone working for ATI right now is having a bad day standing in the unemployment line :D

The game is more CPU intensive then gfx intensive hence ppl with below 2ghz are gonna have a tough time playing the game, the way it was meant to be played, lets see how the game plays in SLI mode!!

This was expected i dont understand why people are surprised. Nivida ownz at OpenGL. This doesnt take away from the fact that the x800xt is a great card. Personally i wouldnt buy a pro i think for price they cant be compared to the 6800 series cards I have a 6800Gt and am glad i made the purchase, but i allready knew how things would turn out when i bought this card a little less then a year ago. The 6800 series is a great line and it going to hurt ATI bad this round. The 6800 nu domanates the older generation cards for a little bit more, the GT Rocks the pro in allmost all benchmarks not just doom that i have seen, and has great overclocking (mine getting to 445/1200), and the 6800U and the x800xt are great competitors, with before this review things where in a little favor for the XT, but this game changes that. As for people saying that doom3 will be a shitty multiplayer game they are retarded. Doom will have mods within the first couple months which will open up more then 4 player multiplayer for those who want it. Money is mosly made in the mid lv video cards and nivida owns the market here right now. Cant wait to enjoy this game at 1600X1200 with max settings and 6.1 suround sound.

It was expected for nvidia to have a slight edge in doom3. We did not expect such a beating.

How's a 9800 Pro going to handle doom3?
If it's not well, It looks like I'll be playing HL2, and tribes3 rather than doom3.

514 posts.....O well atleast it gives me something to do at work for the rest of the day! :D

I havent started reading back into this thread but, 4gb of ram!!!!! Is that a misprint?! How can they expect the avergae user to populate 4gb of memory!?

Read it again. It doesn't state that that's what the average user should expect. The 4GB was shown as high end, and the beginning of the 2GB says "While this test system certainly still qualifies for high end, it is a bit more comparable to systems that many of you own today". Still doesn't say that it's for the average user, just a it closer to them. Also if you read the thread, you will see they are doing a lot of testing using smaller systems and cheaper cards. GG buddy.

are all of you fools, i mean seriously basing a decision on what to buy based on one game one set of benchmarks. look closely at the systems wow both intel no suprise there and being DELL's (yes DELL's) very shocking anyways you should base your decisions on what you play and the total experence the hardware provides you not (BIG NERDY VOICE) omg i got this card but that card is the fastest card right now for doom 3 omg i must have it there are more games out there than doom 3 Fps isnt everthing :)

i know more memory always helps - but is it possible that d3 doesnt even utilize more than 1.5 gigs or so? i dont think we will see fps drops more than 5 from about a gig of ram.
just my .02

On long term basis, Its gonna be expensive to have Geforce 6800. It consumes a lot of power (est. extra 100-200 dollars pa.) , becomes hot enough for barbecue and noisy so the surrounding gonna get tinnitus.

With Half Leif 2, X800 is gonna outperfom Geforce by a great margin. I'm surprised that Geforce isn't that faster than Ax800, considering that ID have spent a lot of times to optimize for Nvidia cards... :D

Maxius, all they were doing was comparing the graphics cards, and the only way to do that is to get two identical systems. Companies like Dell make a lot of good machines. Companies like Alienware make fewer excellent machines. Why not use a couple of Dells? JC has always been a big fan of SMP and HT tech, so it's only natural that the best performance will come from an Intel machine. I am a little surprised that he hasn't been tempted to play around with the new toys available on the A64 architecture (most notably greater precision).

Personally I wanna take home one of the machines we have here at work (Dual Xeons) slap in a 6800 and see what happens!

Hopes for the big D3 round up:
1. Skim over the effect of ram on the benchmarks. For example: run the benches on the 3rd from top machine with 256/512/768/1024/1536/2048 meg to see where it tops out. Don't want to order too little ram and find my machine chugging, then having to order more.
2. Go down to my spec of machine (1.4GHz + GF3). Okay, that's a little selfish as I'm upgrading as soon as D3 is launched in the UK (and I've paid August's rent!), but that sort of spec.
3. Benchmark the boardgame to! :D

Care to think about how many games will be based off of the doom 3 engine?

I went into reading the article with a sense that the new video cards were going to be fairly close in benchmarks. I was genuinely shocked at the less than stellar performance of the X800 Pro and how the 6800 GT was trouncing the X800XT PE. This will certainly be the "talk of the town" for a few days/weeks.

I myself have been a fairly loyal ATI user (not a fanboi) for a little while. When Best Buy had the $299 pre-order price for the BFG 6800GT OC, I knew it was time to ditch the 9700 Pro card. The price was simply too tempting not to order. :D I am now seeing that it was certainly a very wise decision. I guess the powers to be were smiling upon me that day I pulled the trigger and ordered the card. :p

1. Between the 6800U and x800XT PE, subtract 10-15% from "a lot of power" and "hot enough for barbecue" and that's still hot. That's what the x800XT PE cards run at. But running a 6800GT (faster than the x800XT PE in Doom3) erases that power difference and provides faster performance.

2. the NV30 path was dropped from Doom3 several months ago. The NV3x/NV40 and R3x0/R420 all use the same ARB2 rendering path. The other available rendering paths are: NV10 (GF3/GF4MX), NV20 (GF4 Ti) and R200 (Radeon 8500/9000/9100/9200). Period.

FPS IS NOT EVERTHING it is the complete gameing experence the hardware provides you....

True but if your FPS is too low you wont have that complete gaming experience. Why would I not want to have an extra 20 FPS?

I wonder if my Athlon 64 would improve those numbers any.
I hope so. ;) Those were just stock Dell systems benchmarked and CPU speed seems to have an effect on performance, even at 1600x1200. A system with tweaked memory timings and a fast Athlon 64 CPU will hopefully at least be competitive with the higher end system they tested (P4 3.6GHz/DDR2/i925x).

Does Half Life 2 even matter? I doubt that game can even compare to Doom 3 graphicwise anyway.
