i7 930 overclocking thread

Thanks for the realtemp suggestion, I had missed that. It seems to be about the same as everett- I hit 90C max with 10 runs of linx testing at 185x21 @ ~1.200V reported, 1.235 set in bios. Doesn't that seem hotter that it should be, especially for the voltage that I'm running at?

I followed Cecil's guide, but then was scared off after i saw a core1 temperature reach 95C (1.35V, ~4.1ghz). I'm kind of confused on what I should run my Vqpi? Cecil says increase it to 1.3 - 1.35 or so, however post #2 says around 1.1V. My Vqpi is 1.24V currently.

I have turbo mode off, speedstep off, and HT off (should make it 10C cooler right?).

I used a thin coat of AS5 (small rice grain size, and spread with CC). Perhaps it is my wimpy push / pull fans that I have on the radiator? Also the ambient temperature here is around 30C.

That's unusually hot.. what cooler are you using? Id do a reseat then TRIPLE check all of the fans to make sure they are pointing the right direction and plugged in

From my limited experience, 0.02v to go from 3.8-4.0 and 0.04-0.06v to go from 4.0-4.2.

All of this greatly depends on the CPU you have. Out of the three CPUs I've had, going from 4.0-4.2 required the largest voltage boost.

From two i7 920s that I have experienced, it takes .9 to get from 3.8 to 4.0. Ive never tried 4.2 though.

I hit around 76c with HT on and have concluded the H50 just can't take advantage of the FT02's positive pressure like a high end air cooler would.

Hi, I just got a new I7 930 but I can't find this batch # 3014A791 on here ???

Mind posting how it clocked? I just got a 3013A572 and have been looking around for more recently packed batches (the third and fourth digits indicate packing week). The most recent ones I find consistently are weeks 1-3 of 2010 and I've found virtually none from this week 13-14 batch.

Don't have my board yet so I can't test it myself.

Just passed two hours of stability
Note temps are a lot higher than normal as i forgot to open my room door and windows and it was a miserably hot california day today so my room was pretty toasty.

Actually an old batch, it's just that most people don't post about this sort of thing. The 951 part of the batch number indicates that it was fabbed in 2009, week 51.

So do you know if thats a good batch? I have it overclocked to 3.2 right now just a easy overclock, havnt had time to stress it, but it seems to be running hotter than my old C0 920 did @ 3.6. I have the same watercooling as before..

Edit: as you said 2009, week 51 made in Costa Rica

I can get the RAM stable at 2000 MHz, but I have to run the QPI at 1.55V, which I think is unreasonable for everyday use. So I set my limit at the Intel specified max of 1.35V for QPI. Even though the 930 has more headroom, the memory wont go past 1600 MHz without more voltage on the QPI.

No over clocking at all with stock heat sink on i7 930 and after a few moments of running Wprime this CPU quickly gets hot enough for me to cancel the benchmark.

i7930stockcoolertoohot.jpg

I'm going to be working on the bios settings and adding a Corsair H50 for improvements.

It looks like something is very wrong with your system :) Check that the heatsink is seated properly and check the voltage settings in the bios. I'd download cpu-z and run that while testing out your system. It gives some useful info.

After a couple days of tweaking around and stability testing, I finally got it stable at 4.2GHz with 100 passes of LinX 0.6.4 with the latest Intel Linpack Binary at full memory load.

Within a very short time of testing, the ambient temp went from 27C to 31C and as high as 33C in my computer room... The Forge dissipates an enormous amounts of heat very quickly...

omg who knew there was a thread - running my i7 930 at 4.2 on gigabyte x58-ud3r 2.0 - using eco coolit it cooler..it screeeeam. :) and i lovesit.

I'm thinking about getting an i7 930 and would like to OC it to 4Ghz on air, but I'm on a budget. What's the cheapest motherboard and RAM that I can get? Thank you.

MSI x58 pro-e or Asus p6t are probably the best x58 mobos under $200. Gskill for cheap RAM but I saw ocz and kingston DDR3 going for really cheap last week. Id take Gskill over ocz or kingston any day though.

gigabyte X58A-UD3R is a super solid OCing board.it has taken all my cpu.s beyond 4.5GHz with ease.

nice to see the potential of this beast and how high you can take it before needing additional cooling

Built this for a friend... Someone was asking about this batch earlier... IT SUCKS. Default ViD is 1.275v. Tj max is 97C, not 100C! Does 3.8GHz on default voltage, but won't even do 4.0GHz with 1.4vCore. I even tried this one on my R3E that does 4.2 with my other chip.

Moral of the story: STAY AWAY FROM THE CURRENT BATCH AT NEWEGG!

It looks like something is very wrong with your system :) Check that the heatsink is seated properly and check the voltage settings in the bios. I'd download cpu-z and run that while testing out your system. It gives some useful info.

I run CPU-Z. Doesn't help cool my cpu though. Stock heat sink isn't working well for me. I'm going to try some diamond thermal paste on the stock heat sink to see
if it helps.

Intel actually uses more power than AMD

And they're faster too. The more important question is how much specific power consumption. For example, how many kW-hrs (or Joules) to encode a 30 mins movie. If company X takes 1 hour to do it and consumes 100Watts while encoding, and company Y takes 2 hours to do it and consumes only 75Watts, company X is consuming less energy than company Y's chip to do the same task. It's something that's often over looked by reviewers.

Now don't get me wrong, power is important too as you must design your heatsinks to deal with TDP.

But CPU-Z will give you voltage info which could be part of the problem. It's just a guess, you haven't given us much info to go on.

Ok got a Corsair H50 on it last night and began to get into the BIOS to learn how to OC it.

Without much effort I was able to get 4.2 GHZ wtih some voltage bumps.

Here is my CPU-Z for 4.2GHz.

With the H50 temps are much cooler than before.

That is a sweet stable OC.

I'm still learning my i7-930 and MB BIOS. I'd like to tune mine with 1.3v or less for stable 4GHZ. Very nice.

Thanks. I'm working on trying to stabilize 4.2 Ghz now, but not there yet. I may also go back to 4.0 Ghz and play around with a few more settings to see if I can tighten things up just a bit more and maybe bump the memory speed up a notch.

No over clocking at all with stock heat sink on i7 930 and after a few moments of running Wprime this CPU quickly gets hot enough for me to cancel the benchmark.

Update to show improvements of Corsair H50 on same system. Huge improvement with H50 from stock heat sink.

NewbieD very nice voltage on your overclock. Must run very cool and could possibly be over clocked much faster. Looks golden.
