First, they're a bit cooler in their general appearance than the other ad link popups I've seen.

Second, there is about a one second delay before they pop up, so moving the mouse cursor across a page doesn't result in 5 simultaneous popups blocking the text.

Third, when they do appear, they only appear for about a second, which is shorter than other sites.

I understand the need for revenue sources, and since it has to be done, I think this is a good way to do it.

Nice job.

Edit: Also, they appear to be actually relevant to the content of the forum, with links to places to buy hardware.

Thanks for the feedback, please let us know any things you would like to see improved. We are working on a lot of tweaks currently.

Agree with every bit of this. So much better then Intellitext. The fact that they don't pause the screen every time you mouse over them makes them a keeper IMHO.

They are working great, and the ads are actually related to what is highlighted.

We have them turned off right now for most of the forums while we are tweaking the database calls.

i like these alot. its been a while since ive browsed ads. the only problem is that there doesnt seem to be enough. i might be interested in other things in the sigs. usually the uncommon things i dont know about.

yeah, i can tolerate the atmalinks if it helps keep you lot in business, but could it be disabled from signatures, at least? seeings ads in my signature makes me sad.

unfortunately, signatures on this forum readily create a cesspool of ad links... and is exactly what you guys would probably want/need :\

Sorry, that is not going to happen. I would suggest that our sigs are far away from the cesspools I see on other forums implemented by the users. And I would suggest these are not truly "ads." We really want these to be a tool for our readers.

Yea they aren't too bad. Better then the previous ones. Colors don't clash either.

Still waiting for the official Amazon link-age. hehe :p

I recall suggesting in another thread about this that instead of the italic/underline text, it could be made a color. Now I am seeing links in the middle of posts that are underlined, italic, AND a yellowish color. This is way more distracting than even just having them italicized and underlined. Is there a particular reason this was done?

Amazon does things differently. It does not have a database we can pull from to match up to and make our own links like you are seeing done with NE, TD, and ZZF. We do however rewrite the link when you click on it to see us as the referrer and supply a commission.

Yes, we wanted to measure feedback on the change. Now it looks very like a normal link here but italicized.

Could you make it a different colour from normal links? Like this it's a bit confusing.

+1 Agreed. It's sort of confusing in FS/FT threads when the title of the item is linked to Atmalinks and the link directly below it is also a link to the product page, but it almost all looks like one giant link.

Suggestions are always welcome when asking for changes.

Darker orange done. Check it out and let me know. Hitting the rack for a while now though.

I think that looks a LOT better, and you can actually distinguish them from normal links now.

Anyone else have any comment?

EDIT: It makes it a lot more readable in a thread like this:

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1516307

Where some of the product names are actual links to the product site, but also where Atmalinks has converted some of the originally non-linked products to sponsor links.

EDIT2: I also noticed that when you click on the user-made links to Amazon from that thread, they automatically redirect through Atmalinks. Not saying that's a bad thing, just interesting, kinda cool, actually. :)

Darker orange looks good.

the FS/FT posts are going to be a cluster Fyck of colors anyway since sellers use so many different colors in their posts.

I think the color, highlighting, etc is good now.

I think with the white they were blending in to much and were not being seen. Certainly we do not want to "fool" you into thinking it is a reader link, but I also do not want to add another totally different color to the page and throw off the readers balance there either.

And yeah. FSFT and crazy colors are just gonna have to deal with it.

Very inobtrusive + earns [H] some $ = WIN/WIN
No complaints from me whatsoever.

Even though I know this holds the chance of an attack telling me to 'go away' if I don't like it, I want to post my feedback anyways.

I don't like ads like these. I don't like moving my mouse around the screen with windows popping up all over. If and when I want to purchase from Newegg, I don't have a problem doing so for myself via clicking a [H] link, so these "tools" (if that makes you feel better to call them that) are unnecessary. If this is truly meant to be a tool rather than an ad, allow me to disable them.

I still feel that blocking ABP users is a better idea because this is where this whole new revenue/ad fiasco came from to begin with. For us non-ABP users, we have to deal with annoying ads for what others have done and that's not right. I understand someone has to pay for the site but it was doing fine for a decade without this stuff when ABP was not a big issue, so why not just block them?

Your thoughts are noted, but I take issue with this statement. " I don't like moving my mouse around the screen with windows popping up all over." That simply does not happen with Atma Links and is a false objection. We have been very specific about making sure that does not happen.

I fully agree with your on blocking ABP user as well, we are still working on that.

As for your understanding of how revenue works, this forum has only ever made money one year out of a decade. The forum is HUGE now and needs to support itself, no be subsidized by HardOCP.com. So things are simply not the same as they used to be.

I do appreciate the feedback and if it was anyway a larger group that felt this way we would weigh our options.

I don't mind the ads the way they are. Except whenever I roll over them on firefox, they crash my browser. It might be cause of the plug-ins I have.

Amazingly enough, they don't crash safari on my macbook, lol.

might be some plug in you have. doesnt crash firefox for me.

These are a lot better than those crappy Kontera ads, which were doubleplusungood

These ads are actually kind of fun to mouse over just to see what everyone's parts cost, I found myself mousing over a few items of interest from other people's signatures.

This is a much better way to do text based ad popup advertising. I like how it doesn't pop up and stay there for 30 seconds and instead just disappears after like only a second after I mouse away from it.

Side note, I can't believe those EVGA 260's are still going for $240

These are actually kind of cool. My only complaint is that I wish they would go away a bit faster once you move your mouse off of the link.

Otherwise good job, I guess. :)

Well, the nicest thing is they need about a 3 second roll over for them to actually pop up, so you'll never see them unless YOU hover them. No need to block anything.

Good job kyle, and atmalinks, whoever you are, the only people to make a cool internet ad tool.

They are actually kinda handy. I have come across a few that just happened to use text that linked to something that explained what it was.

For example.. someone posted about a game called xmen origins something or another... hovered over it and learnt he was talking about a Nintendo DS game.

Definitely the best "rollover text ads" I've ever come across. Very unobtrusive, and RELEVANT, which is a definitely plus. Good stuff.

Yes love these honestly. I find that I actually hover over quite a few items just so I can see the price or click through and read up on more information if it's something I'm unfamiliar with. For example your wacom bamboo tablet. ;)

I noticed that a lot of these ads point to Newegg. I thought H and Newegg were not on good terms?

Look around even the banners are newegg ads. Even if they dont see eye to eye newegg and [H] go together like peanut butter and jelly. It would be silly for both to deny advertisement.

Just FYI these are now blocked by Adblock Plus...

Kyle, I use Adblock Plus but have it disabled on the hardforum.com domain. It shouldn't be that hard to write something to detect ABP and display a kind message informing the user of your views. It's been done many times before. :)

I dont see why you need ad blocking software if you dont visit many sites. I actually surf less than 10 sites daily.

Because many sites have ads that are just downright annoying and way too much of a hassle.

Anyways, here is a simple demo I threw together of how you can detect ABP users:

I must say I 100% agree with the OP. These links are hands down a better solution. I actually find that I "LIKE" these links being there. They are unobtrusive, provide additional info at times, help the site out, and did I mention they are unobtrusive?:D

My only complaint is that other sites don't use these.

As an aside, I didn't realize that this forum was run as a separate entity to the main page. I just always assumed they sort of were one who [H]ard shebang and GM was the splinter site.

Heh...learn something new everyday.
