I feel sick too :( Indigestion sucks.

But anyways, If you can't see it on the mobo, but you heard something pop... 97% chance it was the PSU... as djnes said, smell it (Don't inhale... smell..) and your nose shall lead you to the problem.

My dog did this for my once... I heard the pop, dog came running to see what was hapening, smelled the case, smelled the PSU and kept sniffing it. Without even think, put in a diff. PSU. Problem Solved. My dog is [H]ard.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I simply must know- what breed is your dog?

doesn't matter what's up with the psu. that mobo is totally toast.

first order of business, nightrain: get a new mobo. don't test it, tho, until you're absolutely sure that the psu is okay... yeah, it's an antec. but no, nothing is perfect.

starhawk said:
yeah... but an antec? i thought those were bulletproof.

Usually, but even Antec can have a bad PSU come of the line. Just because a company has high-quality units does not mean they'll never ever have a bad unit slip by. It's just less common.

Now, the original poster can try what we've all been suggesting to start troubleshooting, or he can sit there with a non-working comp. Look, I understand not wanting to nuke anything else, but quite honestly, unless you know a means to test this system without swapping the PSU, follow our advice. We may be strangers, but we're not people that want to make someone fry a bunch of expensive parts for laughs. We're not trying to screw you over. If you want to figure this out, follow our advice. Without eliminating the possible causes, we don't have anywhere to go.

 not much to test. his mobo's been fried like an egg on an albequerque sidewalk.

 no offense to albequerquians...

Anyone think I should just RMA the case, and get a nice Antec one with a good PSU? And if the new case doesn't work I can figure out that it is the motherboard and replace it?

if the coating's fried on your mobo, nightrain, it's a pretty good bet there that it ain't just the coating. the board has to get very hot to do that... far above normal temps for any p4... it's a solid bet that most of the chips on the mobo would have to be replaced.

After reading this thread, I would say rma everything and get yourself a Dell or HP or something. The original poster seems to have no clue what is happening, and he mentioned he took an A+ class, which confirms he doesn't know anything.

I agree, you weren't willing to study the computer when you were told to. You worried about things being wrong with it if you looked... WHICH WAS THE POINT! and you certainly don't seem to have enough understanding of putting a computer together to be able to do it reliably. A dell or HP isn't anything exciting but at least it will work, have a warranty, and not require you to fumble around with it.

 i suspect that his a+ class was one of those "fast track degree" things...

 nightrain, a piece of advice: get this book. read it. cover to cover. learn everything within it. learn it well. then you will know what we know. then come back and tell us that you are learned and you still need help.

you will then have a chance of showing your face here and recieving respect. a degree is totally meaningless if you don't have the knowledge that is supposed to go with it. i'd say more if i didn't think that i'd get banned for saying it.

u don't think he should go with "building a computer for dummies"?

I wonder how many people who give good advice in the forums have any formal certs at all? I'm guessing not very many.

Yehh. A lot of the people I know who have certs are about as intelligent as a fencepost.

Reading this thread was like watching a horror movie, you know the dudes an idiot and gonna die and you just want to yell it out, but he can't hear you, next thing you know he is getting electrocuted with his fried PS in the shower, girls scream, popcorn flies, only if he could have heard you and knew what to do...

although i do not have the certification itself, i took the class and consider myself 80%-90% sure of what is covered in there.

I just reread the thread again. This is hilarious. maybe he is dyslexic? I love the part how he troubleshoots it again and says "maybe its the PSU" after like 1,000,000 people already told him that it was the PSU.

ha, same here...

i wonder if he checked it yet...

...Compters are easy, any idiot can build one. See? All you gotta do is plug stuff in and turn it on! Man, this A+ book isn't telling me anything I don't already know... what a waste of time...

***POP***

OMFG OMFG OMFG!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok seriously though, next time get someone to help you BEFORE you blow it up.

im sorry this is just funny

Dude like 80 ppl just told you want to do sounds like the PSU and mobo are fryed the MAY be ok so just get new mobo and PSU and if your lucky it didnt take any thing with it

He probably forgot to put the standoffs under the motherboard, and just screwed it straight down to the case/mobo tray. I've actually seen that happen before.

Too true man, too true.

He probably forgot to put the standoffs under the motherboard, and just screwed it straight down to the case/mobo tray. I've actually seen that happen before.

I did this on my first build. Got lucky though, after the OMFG WTF just happened phase, I got a bit of help and it all worked. I was lucky that there was no permanent damage. That system is still running today.

First of all I'm not dyslexic. This is my second build, and this is the first time where I have repaired or upgraded a computer and something has went wrong as this. I posted here to clear my thoughts and hopefully get some good advice (which I did). I don't appreciate the flaming when you have no idea what I have done or not. So please if you want to be mature act it. I understand I have skipped advice. Oh and yeah I did use the standoffs.

Second I took a gamble when I built this case and got the POS PSU. I was going with a nice plain looking Antec case with a nice Antec PSU and my brother (who is 27) was like a kid at a toystore when he saw the flashier NZXT Gurdian. Now I should have told my brother that Antec makes higher quality stuff, and we wouldn't need to buy a new PSU if we went with the Antec case and he refused. So I took a gamble and used the POS PSU, and I lost. Shit happens. We move on.

Now today I finally got to the PSU. I first tested the PSU with having only the ATX connector into the motherboard (to save myself from losing any good parts) and it didn't power on. Ok. So I used the method of sticking a wire into the ground ATX wire and the green ATX wire. It still didn't work. So the conclusion is the PSU is dead. So I will probably get one off newegg tonight.

Also we all have to learn somewhere. This is the first major time (like I said before) something of this magnitude has happened to me.

hmmm... it's actually relatively safe to open a psu. i did it once, and i never felt a thing... maybe because i never got zapped. the trick is to actually not touch or mess with the components. just verify that all is not well in some manner, and how so.

i for one would enjoy seeing pics of what a dead psu looks like inside.

btw... the one i opened was a double-decker at psu... it had 2 boards in it, one components-up, one components-down. it was extremely difficult to examine that thing without touching anything, but i did it. i even separated the 2 halves with no trouble.

Oh and I did check inside the PSU (voiding the warranty ah) and there didn't look to be any physical damage. Except there was some burning on the inside case edge. Which makes me believe that the spark was ONLY in the PSU and not near the parts.

Also any advice on which PSU to choose this is the oneI am looking at right now:

Antec P4 ATX12V 350 Watt

one thing to consider with the psu: many psus won't turn on without load. the motherboard could just be bad as well and not sending the proper signal to power on the psu.

though a new psu is a good idea regardless. i kind of doubt that both those things would be true (unless you put JUST the motherboard on it, without cpu/memory... then the motherboard might not send the atx power on signal...)

good luck with the new psu.

i think that most of the flaming in this thread (mild, actually... i've seen worse) was due to your reluctance to try the psu... but i also think that we were all like that at some point or other. i'd just ignore the flames. it helps to remember being new at diagnosing computer problems.

That maybe however when I tried this method it didn't work either. So all I know is that the PSU does not work and that some of the other internal devices do.

what's wrong with it?

It died. That was the problem I had with my first system built (except not as bad). Oh and just talked to my friend (another one :p) and he said he would lend me one of his spare power supplies. :)

looks like a good psu... (not the one with the case, the antec one)

btw... my friend got that same case and... well... he doesn't have it anymore (let's just leave it at that :D ) *cough* ugly case *cough* :D

also very good that you're a newegg.com person! NEWEGG ROX!

Btw...

just kidding with all the comments too... nothin personal... (i read the "how to build a pc for dummies" a while ago too... :D )

OK, the reason you got flamed is, that threads for advice usually go like this:

1) Explains problems, asks for advice

2) Advice given

3) more advice given or first advice confirmed

4) advice tried

5) Adviced worked or didn't, if yes, says "thanks" if not says "ok what else could it be?"

With your thread it went like this:

1) Same as above

2) Same as above

3) Same as above

4) Complete opposite as above, asker of advice second guesses advice or offers solutions which are ludicrous (ie thermal compound caused explosion)

5) Asker of advice then offers explanation which mirrors original advice given

6) people tell you to follow original advice, which corresponds entirely with your own belated diagnoses

7) you refuse

8) repeat numbers 6 and 7 multiple times

9) frustration and flaming

Sorry, no offense, if thats how the thread goes, you really have no reason to be sour.

Respectfully,

Dario

i sorta hate to say this... but i concur with dariob.

i further predict that either (a) your response will be a mild flame to both me and dariob or (b) you will not respond at all.

well I will agree with both of you to diffuse his anger among three of us instead of two :D

he's still either gonna (a) try to cook us alive (and fail miserably since i simply do not care and will reply in kind) or (b) not respond at all.

no... just means that i wish that our n00b friend were a little less like me: stubborn as a rented mule.
