Only once? I've spent 30 minutes screwing with floppy cables flipping them every which way until they work before. That's why I gladly don't put floppy drives in my comps anymore. I hate all cables that don't have the tabs on them to only be plugged in one way though.

He admitted he was fairly noobish and I am sure he wanted to try the free(tho extremely unlikely) option first. He got bad advice from someone he knew yet had enough sense to post here realizing the advice probably wasn't that sound.
If you offer advice and someone doesnt immediately take it just move along. No need to stand in a corner and scream at them.
BTW, get a sparkle/fortron psu. They are cheap and ultra-reliable. And smack your brother for using that case. LOL.

I forgot to connect my CD drive to the cable once. Couldn't figure out why Windows didn't want to install for the longest time. My CE friend and I sat there with the case open looking at the CD drive and everything else for 30 min. Finally realized there was no cable.kpedge said:

Good news!
I checked my friends PSU (using the Green/ATX + Ground/ATX method) and the PSU fan spun up. Then I installed it onto the system. I only hooked the main ATX connection to the motherboard, and nothing else. Good the CPU fan starts to spin. Then I put power on the DVDRW drive, hard drive, and floppy. GOod. Everything is working nicely. Next I hooked the IDE cables up and hooked the system up to a spare monitor and keyboard. Excellent. I got into the bios and it detected everything. Now I will install XP soon and hopefully this baby can be up and running. The only problem I encountered was in the BIOS; the BIOS stated that the CPU was clocked at 1100MHz when it is supposed to be around 1800MHz. Shouldn't be to hard of a problem to fix as I long as I do it slowly.

Now I can come to the conclusion that the spark came inside of the PSU because of the burn marks inside.

I think the real lesson learned here is "don't panic". That just makes everything seem 100x worse than it really is.

The major lesson I learned from this is that I will always put a good PSU on top of the list. Even if it is a cheap budget system.
Also remember, a budget system in time could turn into more than that and having a good PSU in the system could save you money in the long run since you might not have to upgrade the PSU along with other things.
Quality up front can easily save you money in the long run.

one of the good things about those kudo points nightrain... they actually are worth something. those 100 kudo points will knock anything in my fs/t thread that is $2.50 down to $1. ergo, 200 kudo points will knock something that is $5 down to $2... and i happen to have a $5 pci game card that might just still work... it would make a nice addition to your comp, i think, even tho it is more than a little old.

Good to hear it was just the PSU. On your next order you might want ot get one of these. Not only starts the PSU but puts a load on it.
