I just put together my brothers computer. I went over turned it on and *BANG* a big spark, and it started to smell. OMFG I am going to collapse. :(

Well I hope to god it didnt take the motherboard with it. If it did I'm screwed.

I was just talking to my friend and he thinks the blame is on the heatsink clay (which is what AMD uses instead of giving you paste) and that it shorted. So he is going to lend me some paste and try that. Man my biggest worry is that the spark/short/spike took out the motherboard. >_<
 
If you cant find any physical damage to the motherboard, the PSU may have blown a cap. What brand is the PSU?

not very possible considering there is the IHS on top of the proc to prevent that from happeneing(among other things)

my guess would be the power supply

I think it is generic. A brand called "Crion" now I know not to get PSU's that don't have a good name but this isn't exactly a top of the line system.
 
Your friend is an idiot if you told him there was a bang and a spark, and he's blaming the thermal pad/paste material.

There doesn't look to be any real physical damge (no burning, etc) but it might be just blind by the eye. So will probably try the new thermal paste and if it doesn't work it is probably just the CPU. If the new CPU doesn't work then well... :(
 
Take off the heatsink. See if there is any damage. If not, it might be the power supply.

My friend told me to wait until he came over (whenever that maybe) to remove the heatsink. >_>
 
I hope it's not the same friend. And one more time for those who are ignoring the previous posts. Thermal pads and paste DO NOT GO BANG! It's absolutely insame to think that swapping new thermally conductive material will fix the problem. Just because you don't "see" damage, doesn't mean something didn't die. The PSU is also a likely cause, but you haven't checked it. Please use some common sense here....do you really think thermal material will spark and make a bang??? Seriously?

Do you still think I should try and apply new paste? Or remove the heatsink for that matter right now?

in short your friend doesnt know what hes doing

if there really was a bang, then there would be physical signs of it, and since there is none on the mobo, it is prolly the power supply(ESPECIALLY because it is soem generic brand)

I would first smell the PSU. If it died or blew a cap, your nose will tell you. Then, if that's okay, I'd remove the heatsink and the proc. Check under the proc for any black marks, and in and around the socket you pulled it out of. If that all looks okay, then you'll have to play the part swap game to find out what died. One more time, thermal material is not going to spark and bang....something else did in the system, and died at the same time.

What if lets say I didn't apply the heatsink right and some of the thermal pad got a bit messed up? Now if that is the case if I remove the heatsink I should see damage correct?

unless you already smeared all of the grease off of the heatsink, you shouldnt be concerned...
 
I vote that its the PSU. Pop a KG one in there and I bet it will work.

take that mobo out and place it on a table.. use a known working psu.. if you don't have one buy it at return it (this is what i did for my mom's computer).. get all spare working parts that you have..

you may have shorted the mobo out on the case, it has happened to a few people on here.. but put the motherboard on a table.. plug in a psu. vid card, and memory, and of course the cpu and heatsink.. it should work.. if not swap parts until it does..

The damage is done, it's time to look at it. ;)

I agree with the previous posters.

1) Your friend doesn't know much about computers.
2) If you heard a loud *pop* it's more than likely a bad PSU. I suppose a cap on the mobo could have blown....but you'd be able to see that pretty easily.
 
I feel sick too :( Indigestion sucks.

But anyways, If you can't see it on the mobo, but you heard something pop... 97% chance it was the PSU... as djnes said, smell it (Don't inhale... smell..) and your nose shall lead you to the problem.

My dog did this for my once... I heard the pop, dog came running to see what was hapening, smelled the case, smelled the PSU and kept sniffing it. Without even think, put in a diff. PSU. Problem Solved. My dog is [H]ard.
 
I've never experianced a PSU myself, but when my G/F (not my G/F) had her PSU blowout, She mentioned a big bang.

I had a spare Codegen 300W PSU to try. (hers was an L&C 300W) Started up, she gave me 20 bucks for the PSU, and I went home.

But... What if it happens again, what will I do..........................

Not to give you a hard time because I do feel your pain but... If you have a system that, if it fails, will give you a reaction of "OMFG OMFG OMFG" or "I feel Sick" then a good PSU is probably a wise investment.

That being said. Find a spare PSU. Most mom & pop shops will have used ones available (or just go DD'ing) for you. Most likely this will be your problem.

You know guys I hope it really only is the PSU that went wrong, and it didn't take anything else with it. I can only hope...
 
This is quite silly for everyone to tell you over and over to check the power supply. Try this: disconnect the power supply from the motherboard. Then follow the directions here: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1026117194&postcount=8

Quick Edit: That's not exactly a sure fire way to say it's good but if it spins up all you would need to do then is check the power on the individual lines with a multimeter and a search on google.

Don't run out and buy a new PSU just yet simply take the entire system apart and start sniffing. If in fact something did pop you'll see or smell the bad part. Good Hunting!
 
just take the psu out of the pc u are using right now........u dont need the hassel of buying a new one and returning it....if it works, get a new psu for it, if it doesn't, oh well....cant win em all
 
I checked the optical drive and it worked. I didn't try the other because I wasn't sure if there was a need. I will probably check the video card, and hard drive tommorow. But the optical drive does work, so that is a good sign.
 
dude, nighttrain if the majority of the people on the thread provides help and asks u to check the psu then why dont u but if u already did then just ignore me
 
I killed a PSU this way, turned out the floppy power connector was off by 1 pin and it shorted, bang and smoke, so... CHECK THE PSU!
 
Like the other folks in the thread have suggested, it sounds like the PSU went kaput.

Buy a quality PSU (Antec, Enermax, Sparkle/Fortron, or PC Power & Cooling---if you want the Rolls Royce of PSU's). It amazes me how people blow wads of cash on the finest video card, mobo, CPU, and RAM, but use some generic POS. I don't get it.

Seriously, get a GOOD power supply and try it.
