dude....

check the psu....

everyone has recommended to do this, and it's probablly what went wrong caue there's a lot of capacitors in psu's and your psu isn't exactly top of the line, so it has a chance of blowing up on you.

just smell the psu cause (personal experience) blown capacitors smell... and they do make a loud pop when they blow up... (i, uh... "experimented" with a few capacitors i found... :D )

Rule #1 - Buy a quality PSU from a company like Enermax or Antec.

I don't feel to comfortable with using that method of testing the PSU. Also what if I go and change the PSU and the same thing happens?

No offense.. but quit being a scardy cat.. go out get a new PSU and do it!...

it wont if its good.

My worry though what if it is the CPU or the motherboard that caused it? What if I put in a new PSU and I fuck things up even more?

Dude you have had like 50 people all tell you the same thing. It is 98% likely that its the PSU and you could tell if it was the mobo just by looking at it. Put in a new PSU and I bet it will work just fine.

I've never experianced a PSU myself, but when my G/F (not my G/F) had her PSU blowout, She mentioned a big bang.
when ur gf not ur gf? HUH???

back to the main topic... CHECK THE PSU!!!... dude everyones telling u to check your powersupply which is most likely the culprit... JUST CHECK IT... we're sitting here in front of OUR computers trying to help you fix your comp without any help from you... now i suggest you pick your lazy butt up and go check it

chances are, as mentioned, that the caps in the psu blew... smell parts by parts for burn odors... then if its coming from the psu, just swap psu's

easy as pie

I know I am being stubborn... but what if I put in a good PSU and the same thing happens? I could fuck up the system even more then it is now.

Also someone told me on another forum that I should have flashed the bios to make the semrpon compatible with the motherboard. Is this true and if it is, could that have possibly been the reason for it?

If the same thing happens, then its the same bad component, ie the motherboard, which is already dead if it was the problem to begin with

Also someone told me on another forum that I should have flashed the bios to make the semrpon compatible with the motherboard. Is this true and if it is, could that have possibly been the reason for it?

No. An incompatible chip + mobo combo in no way would be able to do things you described happened.

i don't think you can fuck up a system more

if it's fucked it's fucked lol...

So did you smell the damn thing? You can tell pretty easily by looking at the processor and checking the power supply for signs of damage.

It is incredibly unlikely and most likely impossible that something like that would have anything to do with it. That would just prevent you from booting most likely. Blowing a cap (which is what this sounds like) won't be related. The best thing to do is to inspect the computer, remove the CPU and check it since you were concerned, but make sure there's no blown capacitors on the mobo, and make sure it didn't ground to the case (look for scorch marks) and finally check the PSU (which is what it most likely was).

Well right after I saw the spark it smelled. Now I know from my A+ classes that the type of smell I sniffed most likely was the PSU. Also I checked around the capacitors and none look damaged. That along with the fact that the optical drive worked make it seem like the PSU is to blame.

Ok so lets say I go out and buy a nice antec PSU. I install it and turn the power on... BANG same thing happens. Now I have just wasted a good PSU. What are the chances that somehting like this will happen?

no he doesn't seem to be and people like him just waste the time of those who are trying to help

What if you stop being such a pessimist and do what everyone has suggested and it works? What are the chances that will happen?

Generic power supplies are bad, mmmmkay? If you are reading this, NEVER use a generic power supply.
Get a better ps, if the system still doesent work, its RMA time.

step one: RMA the entire setup.
step two: go to www.dell.com
step 3: pick out a nice lil desktop
step 4: pay
step 5: be happy

or just do what other people have been saying....

Whats so hard about getting the psu out of your system and testing it in your brothers

that wouldnt be the best of ideas...

the psu could still power up and overvolt all its rails

testing the current hardware with a new PSU & then if that doesnt work, test the PSU on a different system would be much safer

Are you wondering about the chance that the PSU would work, or that he'd listen and actually try that?

Yeh I've got a blown PSU here that likes to give 240v AC to the 3v Line Great for smoking processors motherboard and pretty much everything else on the PC.

As for Advise. well hmm how can I say this. It's the PSU 99% sure of that.

If you go out a buy a new PSU then just plug in the mainbaord no devices. Not Needed.

Then remove all PCI cards except the vidcard. then power it up. if it powers up then One by one put all the pci cards in. If it's working still then plug in the Harddisk's and optical drives one at a time.

PSU's only blow from generally three things.

1.) Rubbish companants.
2.) Overloaded or Full of dust.
3.) User Error.

It's VERY VERY VERY rare for another Companant to blow a PSU and if it did then That bit's useless anyway.

Guys I understand I am just worried about switching in a good PSU and then having the thing do the same exact thing. I don't want to spend money on an Antec PSU to only have it fry. :(

k um, take some reading classes along with your A+ shit. if it fries, there will be a warranty anyway. good job. now go do it. thanks.

Simple. If you're not confident to take anyones advice, then we can't help you any further. Take the PC to a computer shop and pay them to fix it. Just make sure you tell us what the repair report says.

you know... i could probably log off my account... then create another one, a bogus account... and then make a thread about a problem... and then ask ppl for help and not COOPERATE!!!!... sheesh, if u want our help, take it, if you dont wanna take it, go away and stop expecting us to fix your computer like this

how about nobody post anymore help until this guy reports back to us telling us he followed our instructions and actually checked his powersupply?... maybe we'll get somewhere like this.

[/wasting time]

hmmm... look closely at the board. does it look like some sort of coating melted off? if the answer is yes... start shopping, your mobo is shot.

yeah, you can repair it... but that involves poking at it with either a logic analyzer or a multimeter and checking it against spec. either way, you have hours of poking at numbers to see if there is something fried. just chuck it and get a new one.

It seems like you need steps to print out :)

1. Take everything apart
2. make sure your in a clean area to put everything back together
3. make sure you use the motherboard spacers to create a gap between the case and the motherboard (you may have been grounding your entire motherboard)
4. check and make sure all wires are in their proper places
5. Boot up.

And if that doesn't work...

1. get a RMA (Return Merchandice Authorization) and send everything you bought back.
2. get some advise before you jump into making your own computer.

And as your first set of advise buy an antec PSU next time.

PEOPLE... THERES NO POINT IN WASTING YOUR ENERGY REPEATING WHAT HAS BEEN SAID ABOVE

nightrain... if you dont check your powersupply, we cant help you... period

sorry but thats how it is... dont bother us to waste our energy to help you do something you wont do

Yes it does look like some of the coating melted off. :(

have u even tried the more easier way yet, switch the psu first then worry about the mobo, because the psu is a generic brand in the first place
