The formal name is seemingly leaked as "HTC One (M8)" with the "M8" no longer just a code name...
 
Well it looks like I have finally found a replacement for my aging Galaxy Nexus. Does anyone think there will be an unlocked version of this phone released on Verizon shortly after the March 24th announcement? Anything rumored in the next few months worth holding off for?
 
Is it me or does this look like a HTC One Maxx or whatever the phablet HTC phone is....

It just looks massive, maybe its the colors used or design....looks big.
 
The mini, regular and ultra? All share the exact same design just not the same dimensions. This looks like the same phone, much like what Samsung did, they are keeping the same design.
 
Fortunately Sense isn't such a horrible skin that you must replace it. HTC has also been pretty good at delivering updates.
 
A rumor (specs posted for the HTC One (M8) from a Chinese website) states that the "Duo Camera" takes a 16 MP and a 4 MP shot. From catalog from the company behind the ultrapixel (2 micron pixel) sensors, the sensor in the original isn't available anymore. Assuming HTC stuck with the same company and didn't just take available 4.0 MP 2.0um, best resolution by pixel size sensor choices are a 5 MP 2.2um sensor, a 4.8 MP 2.8 um sensor, or a 4.0 MP 3.4 um sensor (if I did my math correctly). Without knowing the price, the 5 MP 2.2um make the most "sense" for a hw update. But rumors does point to a 4.0UP sensor... does that mean HTC is using a 3.4um sensor?!?

Theories assuming that HTC did in fact bought out all available 4MP 2um sensors (and that the rumor is true):
1) A 12 MP camera + a 4 UP camera
2) At least two rapid shots from a 4 MP camera + a 4 UP camera
3) A 16 MP camera + a 4 UP camera

First two theories require software stitching the images together to from a greater image. The second theory is the most likely due to being cheaper for the hardware and HTC already proven in the first iteration to have one of the quickest snappers if not the quickest. The third theory basically has HTC automatically choosing which ever sensor to use.

One reason to take this with a grain of salt is that the Chinese website did not list the front facing camera resolution. In the photo resolution data row, it says "N/A, 16 MP, 4 MP" loosely translated. All signs point to a 5 MP front facing camera, so not having it listed is kind of weird.

P.S. The 4.8MP 2.8um and the 4.0MP 3.4um sensors are not standard dimensional ratios. Hence, my math on it could be wrong.

We've seen leaked ads and other details explaining what the secondary camera does -- it's for fast focusing and depth effects. I don't think there's any stitching going on.

Personally, I'm not expecting anything more than a 4MP UltraPixel main sensor (albeit one that may have seen some upgrades) and a lower-resolution companion. Anything else on top of that is just gravy.

Have to admit I watched the above linked video earlier on another website, and I was unimpressed by pictures first, but looks like this phone is a beauty all around. The Gun metal grey version is just beautiful and when he was showing the phone from the side, I am amazed how slim it actually is. I already have a note 3 for personal, but I wouldn't mind having this phone as my work phone. The wrap around design is sure impressive.

OK, I last took German in high school, so I'll do my best to translate.

-The bottom camera is a 4.1 mp Ultrapixel camera and the top one is a 2 mp unit.
-He likes the exterior build quality of the phone a lot.
-He also likes HTC's implementation of Double Tap to Wake, since it's more capable than LG's/Nokia's version - as shown, swipe from bottom up unlocks into an app you have open, right to left = homescreen, left to right = blinkfeed.
-He repeats that the 3d effect is small, because it's not a real 3d camera.
-Other camera effects, going by the button labels = seasons, retouching, "distancing", frame, copy and ..., stickers.
-As AP mentioned, there's an extreme power saving mode similar to the S5's, which suspends or pauses background apps (not sure if I caught it correctly). Since the M8 doesn't have an SAMOLED display, HTC doesn't bother recoloring things. He said that the extreme power saving feature is practical when you have 5% battery left, because you can eke out a little more time with those 5 apps. He mentions that extreme power saving mode is quick to turn on and off.
-He then shows off Blinkfeed and some of the sources/areas of interest you can add (RSS like). You can also add feeds from apps, like Facebook, G+, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc. The new thing is that HTC partnered with Fitbit to integrate your results into Blinkfeed.
-Sense 6, obviously not stock. Most of this is fairly self-explanatory - HTC has their own app drawer, settings panel, app switcher. He says the browser is quick to open and since the M8 has an Snapdragon 801 and 2 gb of RAM, the browser is very smooth. He says the M8 and Sense 6 is a little more responsive than the S5.

I can't wait for this phone to come out and people will start bashing it for every little thing, like they do for every single HTC device.

Can HTC ever recover? They keep building beautiful devices, put a lot of thought into their phones and software, then they sit back and watch Samsung take all the sales with the same generic phones with barely any improvements.

Samsung actually hired tons of Media crows to troll on forums and blackmailing....

They got caught doing it with some classified documentation in the back.
 
I'm not sure I've seen too many negative ads from Samsung (at least not ones aimed at HTC) unlike Apple.

IMO its really a question of ad budgets. Samsung and Apple can spend much more and users just get saturated with the ads. They walk into a store thinking only 2 kinds of phones exist in the world - iPhone or Galaxy.
 
I see people complaining/winning about the same crap with Samsung vs htc every year and none of it processes.

Sure Samsung offers more advertising for their products (for which they have more of) but htc does a terrible job of advertising. They give mr depp tons of money so he can hold up a phone and bob his head, where Samsung shows features much better.

Also htc changes their naming scheme multiple times in one year, no one has any clue what half their products are, or what their names indicated. This is the first year they will be using a similar naming scheme and I bet it pays off big. I just hope them going back in to another useless camera gimmick doesn't hold them back.

Or its because HTC drops the ball on really simple things. Who cares how beautiful your phone is if it lacks basic features like a microSD slot and long term reliability of a removable battery. HTC phones are horrible to work on if anything goes wrong, when that goes wrong people don't forget.

Remember HTC had the lead over any of these guys and they dropped the ball all on their own.

If its all just advertising then they should have taken the money they were making and applied it to advertising.
 
3D picture mode is pretty cool looking. Just watched a video on YouTube (in German so no idea what he was saying) but phone looks quick. I liked my One when I had it but wanted a bigger screen. Preferred stock Sense to any of the other skins as it was quick and seemed to actually add to the user experience rather than providing options that I would not use. Looks like a good phone oveeall. Hopefully they can take some steam away from Samsung.

They didn't drop the ball.
In reality, not many people give a shit about microSD or removable battery. Not to mention the new kitkat update remove the ability to install apps onto MicroSD. It pretty much makes it useless.

Samsung themselves already have tons of cash to spend even before they get into the mobile market. This is also how they got into the market so easily by doing media controls and mass advertising. HTC on the other hand, they don't have enough money to do any of that.
 
They dropped the ball worse than Duke.

Holy cow people get off the advertising thing. HTC has tried to do advertising plenty.

And if you don't think Samsung advertising didn't have anything to do with it, you're crazy. Samsung's marketing budget is $14 Billion.
 
I never said Samsung's advertising didn't have anything to do with it. But advertising only goes so far, you cannot force people to buy something they do not want with advertising. Something HTC should learn.

Also who cares about awards really, everyone gets awards, they are a joke. In the end when my battery sealed behind gobs of glued together metal dies what good are my awards? Especially when it will cost a fortune to have anyone work on that phone.

You all keep forgetting OVER and OVER that HTC used to be in the lead and they squandered that lead by pissing off EXISTING customers and that resulted in word of mouth issues. Mechanical failures followed by over priced repair and service due to lol award winning design rofl.

Haha, there's plenty to why htc isn't in the lead, they make a great phone now, even if it's just incremental over their last one.

One thing Samsung does well is place easy to advertise features on their devices even if it doesn't work well, easy to show off features without needing to get too technical. Boom sound while cool isn't nearly as cool to advertise as touchless control, even if touchless won't ever be used.
 
Wow... I'm assuming brand recognition doesn't ring a bell for you guys. Samsung's jump to one of the top recognized brands according to Forbes magazine must be just a coincidence.
 
If by them rising you mean because htc shot themselves in the foot at every possible chance, sure.

At one point htc was as recognizable as Apple in the cell phone market, even competing well with the iphone.

Impressive device. I'd take one. Sense 6 actually looks like something I may finally want to sue (5 wasn't bad but I still had issues with it). Blink feed might actually be worthwhile now too since it's open to the public.

The fact that you can get it today from Verizon and possibly shipping for other carriers tomorrow is a perfect move for HTC. They need to do something like this in order to compete with S5 and I honestly think the HTC One is a superior device.

Has any review talked about ROM size compared to the bloat that is TouchWiz?

HTC One will be available on the big 4 at 1 PM EST online. Verizon will also have it in stores.

question is when will WorstBuy have the gold edition in stores or online... not that i'm getting it

first impression, m7 looks prettier... hate this logo bezel wasted space. feels more slippery and it's cold.

sprint lists 4G wimax on their infographics! someone is calling corporate right now!

HTC Evo 4G was the seminal phone in many ways, at the time people called it a monster and laughed at its outrageous specs for the time and the size - it was the phone that started the modern smartphone size trend.

The only issue I have with the M8 is the wasted space for the logo, which could've been used as a capacitive gesture strip if they really wanted to have the space.

I'll take front facing speakers with really good sound quality and good radios any day over the crappy signal and sound quality I have in my GS3. And the M8 now has sdcard too, so what more could you want?

Don't really care about CDMA since Verizon will never allow it on their network. And since all LTE phones are GSM anyway, its soon going to matter even less.
