HTC HD2

With WinMo 6.5, perhaps. I actually am a nut and like WinMo overall.

Prepare to have you're perceptions changed in Q3.
I'm all to eager to be proven wrong about WinMo when 7 comes around. IF... IF... IF... it's as good as rumored, the HD2 will be mine.

HD3 + WinMo 7 + 4G + Zune = Mobile Orgy ++:D

I was actually under the impression that the HD *2* is the only phone on the market that the manufacturer (HTC) has actually come out and confirmed that it will be officially upgradeable to WinMo 7.......

google around, its out there

since we're all doing the dream mobile thing, mine is:

an x86 based MID with a SIM slot for calls/data that actually gets smartphone-like battery life (5 hours web browsing, 9 hours talk time, 120 hours in standby) while booted into Windows or Linux (remember, x86 based) and is no bigger/bulkier than an HTC Dream

damn, i think my dream mobile just shit all over everyone else's :)

Oderd this friday on Tmobile UK, I'm a systems administrator for a digital buisness and set this up with our exchange server in no time, push is incredibly quick.

I've used the iphone and was impressive but didn't really want to go for an apple device they've been a pain in the arse to sync with work emails. I was basically waiting for a "iphone killer" but in windows mobile format, I know some people think WinMo is a joke, I had an XDA last and it was really stylus based.

But I set up colleagues HTC HD2 at work recently and it was really good, a very nice phone. Will come back and let you guys know what I think after a few days of using it :)

So that New Egg link shows the device as compatible with US TMO 3G, correct?..or am i reading that wrong.

Edit...UMTS band on TMO is 2100 so this will work.

Not completely. T-Mobile uses 2 different frequencies in the US.

My Bad:p This unit will NOT work with TMO USA 3G.

$750... that HD2 better give one helluva hand job while it's in your pocket.

You can find it for $600ish if you look around. That isn't too bad for an unlocked phone considering you'll recoup the costs quickly if you have a data plan (at least in the US). In the long run, it is actually cheaper, but people are afraid of paying a larger up front sum for a phone and then less over time in the US instead of less up front and more over time.

How much cheaper is a plan on an unlocked phone compared to one on a contract?

I pay $10 a month for unlimited data (not to mention I tether my phone too) instead of the $30+ that I would with a contract. If you add in tax, the difference is about $22 a month. Over the course of 2 years (standard contract length), that adds up to $528. You only save ~$175 on a high end smartphone with a contract anyway, so, it is definitely worth it.

You can however get the exact same OS on several WinMo phones due to being able to flash custom ROMs. The TP2 runs it pretty well.

Thought about this but my TP2 is running just great with only WinMo 6.1. To me the TP2 turned the corner for WinMo last year. This phone not only doesn't suck even with WinMo 6.1, it kinda kicks ass.

Interesting... Good info to know. :)

what service provider/plan do you have? please, please give details...

i'm looking to dump att the first chance i get...

I have AT&T. Like I've said before, since the IMEI number is not in their database, as far as they know, you have a dumbphone. You can then add the $10 a month data plan with ease. If they give you a hard time, buy $15 prepaid Nokia, pop the SIM card in (it will register on the network and they will see it), call them up then and add the data plan, and then put the SIM card back in your phone of choice. I haven't had a contract in years. The fact that I don't have a contract is a nice bargaining tool too if you for example go over your minutes and want to have them lower the bill.

...but you still have to pay for voice service though right? ABout $40 bucks for voice, plus $10 for the data? Im gonna have to try this because i have the HTC HD.

Yes, you have to have some kind of voice plan to qualify for the $10 data plan. Keep in mind that SMS is another charge on top of what has already been mentioned.

I have the tp2, and have used the hd2, and let me tell you, the tp2 will feel like 1995 once you get used to the 2010-yness of the hd2. Now if only WinMo was, well, better!
Pics of that HD2!!!!! :D

Yeah, this is what I was thinking as well. We really have yet to see what WinMo 7 brings, but I've been hearing stuff hear and there and its going to be solid and pretty slick and will have Zune. Zune on an HD2 will be VERY cool.

Two different things..
Nexus one is vanilla android
HD2 is kinda something really new..pushing the envelope of Winmo.

I agree... love my TP2... the HD2 looks nice but I'd likely never touch it since it doesn't have a hardware keyboard :(. I'd LOVE to see a TP3 with the same specs as the HD2 but adding in the uber-5-row keyboard from the TP2...

EDIT: Has there been any CDMA news on the HD2? Yes, I actually WANT WinMo.

HD2 or the Nexus One, that is the question.

I finally got to play with a Nexus One and it was an amazing piece of hardware, it is so very fast. I also got to play with an HD2. My take:
Average Joe: iPhone
Average Techie: Nexus One
Guy who hacks Russian billboards: HD2

Hahaha, hardware wise (besides the bigger screen) the nexus one is a better machine, but the thing im worried about are the two market places, both are quite new in comparison to the apple app store but i havent heard anything about the microsoft market place...nothing at all, i dont know how many apps they have, i dont know what they have and i dont know if they have usefull apps. And just that alone would make me pick the N1. Can anyone comment on the microsoft market place?

oh n0s... yu meen we gots n0s giant appz stores?

C'mon... Time to take the training wheels off and don't just take the spoon fed apple approach

RAM is the only real difference. CPU is the same as well. Saving applications to run from the memory card I dont believe the Nexus allows...

Correct, at least for now. The Nexus one has more RAM but not too much more so im thinking it wont make a real difference.

Right?

Just had a play with the HD2 in a telstra store and i must say i was very disappointed with what i got. The screen was unresponsive and slow, it felt like my finger was always in front of where the phone was. It felt like the snapdragon was being held back by the OS, and when hardware is being held back by software, its never good. After touching an andriod device i dont think i can accpt a winMo device. I must say i was sold on the hd2 until i tried it out in full and now all thats on my mind the the nexus one even though i havent tried it. Maybe i will feel the same way as i felt with the hd2? Only time will tell.

EDIT.
Had a second play with it and liked it more but am still let down by it. I think microsoft has a long way to go if they want to be on par with andriod or apple.
