How much memory do most have?

6GB on the core2quad purchased in 2008. 18GB on the lga1366 i7 purchased in 2010. The dual processor Opteron systems that both of these replaced had 4GB each. I believe I bought 1 in 2005 or 2006 and the second in 2007. At work I have had 8GB for 4 to 5 years and 2 different machines.

I'd say 4gb is sufficient. I have 12gb buts that's only because of how cheap ram has gotten lately

12 at work, 8 at home. I like having some extra to toss at virtual machines.

I use a set of 2x4gbs in each of my pcs. Even though it's "cheap" I'd rather save my money for something else after 8gb.

4GB in my main rig. I don't do anything that memory intensive. Just normal web browsing, email, music, word processing, etc. I do a lot of gaming, but it's just roms and low-intensity indie games.

8GB in my server. Windows 7 plus two virtual machines for Windows Server 2008 and CentOS.

I have 16GB because its like $80 bucks and at that price I figured why not~

I used to have 6 GB in my laptop and in my desktop at work. Both were almost dying because of heavy virtualization (mostly for development tasks). For that purpose, you have to get as much memory as you can. When I switched to my new MBP, I got 8 GB + Sandy Bridge. It helps a lot; virtualization has become a whole new experience. I also virtualize old games like Black and White 2, Rainbow Six Vegas and stuff. For that purpose, 4 GB per VM is more than enough :)

Yet, if I could, I would probably spend a few hundred bucks more and upgrade to 16 GB. Anybody know when the 8 GB DD3 modules for notebooks will be coming? Lmao.

I have 8GB in my HP laptop, up from 4GB, a dv6 3143us.

IMO, 4GB minimum should be standard on new PCs. I remember when most people skimped on RAM and went crying for answers on why their PCs were crapping at a snail's pace.

4 GB in my main system
2 GB in netbook
1 GB in an old system

8GB in my MSI Laptop, up from 6GB when I bought it.
8GB in my new Desktop build in my sig
I want to add another 8GB to my Desktop build only because I got my 8GB G.Skill Sniper RAM kit for $31.49 (Shell Shocker+10% off coupon). If the price gets that cheap again I'll go for it. If not since I won't really see any added benefit for what I use my PC for, the money go elsewhere. I do some gaming, video editing, web browsing and blu-ray watching (on occasion).

8gb, don't notice any difference from when I had 4gb. I ran 2gb for a while and 4gb was a jump from that, but not massive. Probably had more to do with dual channel than anything else.

I've got 6GB in my machine which hasn't really seen any upgrade in 18 months, 6 is still enough for me and what I do with my rig

12 gigs in my X58 rig and 8 gigs in each of my AMD boxes. I like playing with VMs.

My pc has 12GB, and my laptop has only 4GB, but it is still plenty for office and web.

Alright..

Home Desktop: Win7/Linux: 16GB DDR3-2000
Home Server: Linux: 2GB DDR2-800
Work Laptop: 4GB DDR3 unknown speed
Stepsons Desktop:Win7: 8GB DDR3-1333
Wifes 2006 15" Macbook Pro: 2GB (maxed out)
Stepson 1's laptop: 4GB DDR3
Stepson 2's laptop 4GB DDR3

I have 12 gb. Sure need a lot of that for browsing the internet with Internet Explorer 9. Everyone knows that thing is a dog of a memory hog.

I would say 2GB is sufficient for light users (internet, office, light gaming).

I have 4GB in my desktop right now and it's more than enough for my uses.

Win7 64bit
In my laptop I have 4GB but it won't support any more.
In my desktop I have 16GB and it's maxed out currently.

I wish AMD could do 24 or 48GB as I'd definitely max it out as it just makes photoshop and lightroom run so much smoother.

Previously I have 2GB of ram and trying to remove dust spots in rapid fire would bog the system down.
now it's smooth as butter.

I also replaced my drives with 600GB velociraptors which IMO helps with file creation and movement in lightroom vs a 7200 rpm drive. Files just open so much faster and you can scroll through the tiles so much smoother.

What do you do in Photoshop and lightroom that uses so much RAM?

Maybe I'm just not pushing it to its limits, but I haven't noticed much difference in how it behaves between 4GB and 16GB...

I had 4gb before, and things were great.
I upgraded to 8gb because it was cheap and didn't make use of more than 3-4gb at any point until I started dabbling with VM's.
Now I have 16gb. Good thing RAM is cheap.

I have just upgraded to 16 gig :D

I dont game very often and when I do its mostly old legacy games, my memory gets chewed up by my usage pattern which typically is.

Uptime's around a month, rebooting only for monthly windows updates. During this time ram gets sucked up by cache and app memory leaks.
Browsers open with dozens if not 100s of tabs, browsers are "very" memory hungry.
Occasional use of virtual machines, I plan to run more often now I have 16gig instead of 8 gig of ram.

Personally I would consider 3 gig to be min for especially with current ram prices. I state 3 gig as if you get a laptop with 1 gig then stick a 2gig stick in the laptop to upgrade it, I would suggest 4 gig for a desktop as min.

24gigs of triple channel goodness on my X58M :)

I had to upgrade my Windows from Home Premium to Pro to get the OS to see more than 16gigs,

And yes i've had almost every drop of it utilized ,with a 20gig RamDisk running.

It's kinda nice installing games to Ram, then saving the image, and just loading whatever image of a game i want to play. Had the BF3 beta running off Ram all last week :)

4GB is for standard Min.
8GB is for recommend Max.

Think if you going play shiny new BF3 ? This one will hog rams as much as available on your system.

Best chose is 8GB ;)

12GB in my desktop for Linux RAM-caching goodness.
24GB in my DP system for the lulz, because it has loads of RAM slots and I wanted to fill them all up.
