Decided to go with Windows 7 Professional, since at $100.00 it was a pretty good pre-order deal.

Did Microsoft do this preorder deal with Vista?

Why are they doing it with Windows 7. It seems like the people pre-ordering would have bought it when it came out anyway. Seems like they're losing profits here.

I was not planning to upgrade my Vista machine to Win 7. But with the $50 Home Premium upgrade, I now am. That is at least $50 they would not have otherwise received.

I am hoping 7 supports disc verification instead of only install verification. I have heard that it just may.

Only place I've come across that claim was a lady claiming to be from Microsoft and posting on this forum a week or so back.

Same lady who also claimed that Windows 7 RC was a 'suitable' OS choice for use 'through' next year. Which is a kinda weird claim, considering that Windows 7 RC goes into 2 hourly shutdowns from March next year!

I'll believe that 'pop in the disk to verify' is back when and if I see it happen. I'm highly skeptical that it will, though.

I would like to, but im not sure im elegible. I was checking microsoft, and i think you need a retail version of vista, and mine is OEM. But im still wondering if it would work or not =( .

Im just surprise so many not OEM people here.

Anyone know if i have Vista Home premium oem and i wont upgrade any hardware, would i be able to use the $50 Win7 Home Priemium?

..mine is OEM.

When you check out the Microsoft Store to research or make a purchase, you'll find that the info there states that you 'qualify' for a Windows 7 Upgrade if you have any version of license for Windows 2000 onwards, irrespective of whether it's retail or OEM, full install or upgrade install.

Your OEM Vista most certainly 'qualifies' you for the upgrade!

I use ultravnc all the time on my Vista boxes just fine.

How does it work compared to the native RDP in Vista?

I use RDP with MCE and I can use the Media Center from the remote desktop, but with RealVNC the Media Center is unusable. UltraVNC is supposed to be faster since it can use a mirror video driver (if supported), but I somehow doubt it will work as well as the native RDP. I uninstalled RealVNC before trying UltraVNC, so I wonder if RealVNC left something behind in the registry that is causing my problem. I've tried just using a single password with UltraVNC and using the "Require MS Logon" option, but when I try to connect, it says that it can't connect because the remote server doesn't have a password set, even though there is one.

I don't know how, but I did manage to connect one time. The mouse was kind of jittery and as far as performance, I didn't notice any difference between UltraVNC and RealVNC that I was using.

I may just get one Pro and keep the rest as Premium, since I only really need RDP on the one machine.

I gave in and picked up 3 copies, one for myself, girlfriend and mother. While I'm more of a Linux guy my exp. with Windows 7 has been very good and I figured I could shell out a little cash as I haven't given any money to MS since the Windows 3.1 days.

No as I'm hoping Microsoft will send me that free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate as a part of being in the WFP.

RDP is nice for work type things, but I don't prefer it for controlling my home network because I want to login to the console but not lock my computers when I disconnect. I also didn't want to have to have Pro on all my systems. So I used ultravnc and yes it has some issues with 3d stuff which is why I switched to Logmein. It's actually an excellent alternative and I've started using it for everything because you can toggle the use of the mirror driver, it has a ton of options including flipping to second monitors, and it's one place to control all my systems. It also has the free version.

Yes, it works from OEM. There is a post on Digg answering all the windows 7 upgrade questions. I'm in a rush so I don't have time to post it now but you'll find it.

Not just USA as I am in Canada and pre-ordered for $64.99. Europe may not get it just because the EU has been such dicks to Microsoft. Serves you right for fining them millions just for giving people a free media player.

Thx for the reply. I went to read the Digg article, and you are right seems OEM is elegible for the upgrade, so i just preorder :D.

Even though i read that you can do a clean install, im just hoping i can, i really dont wanna install vista first every time i wanna reformat.

The US/CND sale ends this Saturday. The Euro sale starts next week or so. That thread with the Snow Leo/Win7 stuff has a quote in there about it.

If I have Windows Vista Ultimate, will I have a problem installing Windows 7 Home edition since this is considered a downgrade?

Correct.

And a forum user account proclaiming "Microsoft" with every post doesn't turn the claims made via that account into absolute, inviolable truth.

Could be someone posing as a Mickeysoft person. Could be a junior clerical type person within the mickeysoft organisation. Could be anything. Whatever it is, though, the comments being made are more 'PR spin' than they are accurate and adequately informative explanation of real circumstances, IMO.

Not sure if it's been answered but I have an OEM XP in my laptop..would i be eligible for the pre-order Windows 7 if i wanted to install it on my desktop PC?

Technically (following EULA) no, but likely yes it would work. As far as I know, no word yet on whether upgrade copies require the previous OS to be installed and activated. But you could probably install your OEM XP on your desktop (activation should work unless you recently activated on the other computer), then upgrade from there. (Or provide the XP key during install, however it ends up working)

Exception being branded OEM stuff like Dell, etc. Those won't install another systems since they check the BIOS.

Too bad the Win 7 pre-orders are only for upgrade offers. I'm building a new system and will probably go OEM.

Odered directly from Microsoft on the first day it was available, WIN 7 Pro

I ordered a copy for $50. I'm not entirely fond of Windows, but Win7 is worth $50. I wouldn't pay more than that though.

This. For $50 I figure why not. I'm still using XP for Windows on my MBP, but I picked up W7 for my HTPC so I can a legit copy of windows on that and not keep using the W7 betas

Just preordered Home Edition from Newegg for my computer illiterate brother. His laptop drive finally croaked today so I swapped it out with a good one and looked for my Vista install disc. I then recalled that he was always bitching about how Vista was making his computer slow, unreliable, and such and such . With that in mind, I downloaded the 7 RC1 and installed it without any hitches.

About an hour or two after I gave his laptop back, he came out of his room raving about how fast and how 'good' his HP became after I put 7 on it. He also digs the new WMC and media player not to mention how he thinks the new Aero features are sweet (hey, I agree :D). I'm not sure if it's the OS or him but I'm glad that he's now happy with his computer.

For $50 I figure why not.

Yeah. That's the real question, isn't it? At $50 for a legit, retail license you'd be kinda crazy not to, if you're gonna be using it anyways.

At that low price it's only a small and very bearable inconvenience that you gotta verify with a 'previous version' copy to clean install. Doesn't really matter if they continue to use the 'have a version installed first' or if they revert to the 'pop the older disk in the drive during the install' verification method. Either way it's only a minor interruption, and Microsoft have never actually included a check to verify that you're qualifying the upgrade license with an actual legitimate and activated install.

Retail Home Upgrade packs outsell all other products in the 'standalone license' range put together, by a considerable margin. And no wonder. It's what the astute shopper will grab.

Some people have said you don't get charged until it ships, but when I add it to my cart at newegg, it looks like it is going to charge my card right then. Is it different at other vendors?

I pre-ordered @ NewEgg. I got a confirmation email from them (having ordered the first day it was available). My credit card has not been charged.

I will wait and buy the full version as soon as it is availible.
Why not preorder for a cheaper price now? Unless you're not using an MS OS now....

I paid via NewEgg Account, and it hasn't charged me yet.

I ordered 2 HP and 1 Pro from Amazon, then switched to 3 HP, and back to 2 HP and 1 Pro. One of my computers has Vista Business, and it looks like Pro must be used for an over the top upgrade. It would take weeks to reinstall my programs, games, patches, so I figured in the end it's worth the $50 more.

will wait until its been out for awhile and try and pick up a copy here on [H]

How can they be sold out of a pre-order?

They're not sold out of pre-orders. They're sold out of the 50% off preorder deal.

That was announced as a 'limited numbers' deal from the outset. In Japan, from what I hear, it sold out in the first day!

Thought it was limited time and not limited number. I read limited time expiration was July 11th.

Yeah, may cancel preorder for my rig if you can't do a clean install. Wife can have an upgrade install, however...

You can still do a clean install. Just install and activate Xp, Vista, or the Win7 RC, then perform a clean Win 7 gold install. Not seeing the problem here. Except for people intending to continue using the old Win versions license or people that don't actually have a legit previous version to upgrade from.
