there is still plenty of time for microsoft to screw up windows 7.. with microsofts track record on the last 3 OS's.. i refuse to pre-order anything from them..
While it possible to see your point from a historical perspective in regaurds to Windows 7 at this point there really isn't anything LEFT to screw up. 7 is going gold pretty much as we speak, the beta and RC have been out for almost the whole year and there just haven't been many issues.
Windows 7 is the real deal at this point. It's done and solid and will be VERY well received with on the economy being an issue at this point.
Well done Microsoft. Please keep up the good work.
As for the poll, I'm hoping to see Windows 7 RTM on MSDN at the end of the month or early next and will take ALL of my in service boxen to it on that day. I'm on it full time now anyway so the RTM is almost just a formality though I do have a few issues, the biggest being proper pen and touch function on my HP tx2z Tablet PC.
all i can say is.. i hope so.. because the vista beta's were awesome too.. then all of a sudden they just scrapped the whole OS 3 months before its release and started all over again and vista was never the same after..

So I suppose I can say I've pre-ordered Windows 7 Ultimate.![]()
It's not public until 3rd-ish week of October. I can wait. Pre-ordering this early..wow..obsessive much?

I voted no. I don't see there being an issue getting a copy when it comes out.
Did Microsoft do this preorder deal with Vista?
Why are they doing it with Windows 7. It seems like the people pre-ordering would have bought it when it came out anyway. Seems like they're losing profits here.

i'd like to but my copy of vista is oem. Meaning I can only install it on this motherboard. If I have to have vista installed to install an upgrade copy of 7 then it won't work for me as i'll be building a new computer.

That was never really a problem with Vista and it won't be a problem with Windows 7 either.
That's 'officially'. In reality you could use the install disk to deploy a 'trial' install, without using the install code, and then launch a 'custom clean' install from that. Windows 7 will either use the same type of installer (most likely scenario) or modify it to again allow a verifying install disk to be checked during the install (less likely). From what I understand in vista you had to do an install on top of a XP install if you were using the upgrade disc. You couldn't install and upgrade on a bare drive even if you had an XP disc.

I pre-ordered 3 copies of Home Premium, one from NewEgg and two from Amazon. When I pre-ordered, NewEgg had a limit of 1 per customer on Home Premium, but now it's at 3. I'm thinking of canceling the Amazon order and getting them from NewEgg since they have free 3-day shipping vs. Amazon's slow ass free super saver shipping.
I'm also thinking about changing my order to Pro instead of Home Premium. The only thing I need from the Pro is RDP server, and at first I didn't think it would be worth the extra $50. My desktop and netbook are both running XP Home, and my HTPC runs MCE 2005. I use remote desktop to connect to my HTPC (since MCE is based on XP Pro) if I'm away and need to set it to record something or just do updates and maintenance since it doesn't have a keyboard or mouse hooked to it.
Only Win7 Pro and up have RDP server, but there's a hack for Vista to enable RDP in the Home edition, so I went with Home Premium hoping it would be cracked soon for Win7 Home. I've done some more reading on it, and there are some problems with the crack to enable RDP server in home.
I use VNC to connect to my netbook when I need to do something on it. The free VNC doesn't support Vista, but UltraVNC claims to support Vista and Win7. I decided to give UltraVNC a try today, but I can't get it working. I've seen videos of it working on Vista, and it doesn't work as well as the native RDP server. Any commercial remote desktop software is going to cost about $50 anyway, so I'm thinking I may switch my pre-orders to the Pro version.
