hardware pet peeve.

Positive. It didn't show up until the Palamino core (original core of the Athlon XP). If SSE were in the Athlon (which went up to 1.4GHz), it would have totally mopped the floor with the PIII (which would then be down to SMP support as its only real edge). A major feature of the Athlon XP was the addition of SSE.

Ah, you snuck in a quick edit on me (and my slow typing and semi-compulsive struggle to get everything "just so" :p ).

The link is mangled, BTW.

EDIT: Copy and paste (and make sure to tack the "g" on the end if it's missing... jeeze...), as it's the board that's breaking it:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2000/11/30/athlon_palomino_to_include_screaming

Well, I can safely say the T-Bird 1.4 I used to have had no SSE and my current CPU has SSE but not SSE2. Either that or rather a large number of programs are lying to me (but then it doesn't matter since that means they still aren't taking advantage of the stuff I supposedly don't have.)

Oh, and btw, the URL is still mangled. You have to remove that space in there too.

dirty monitor screens.

don't care if it's LCD or CRT, I hate fingerprints on the computer.

IT'S NOT A TOUCHSCREEN, MORONS!

Ironically enough, I still hate fingerprints on screens even when they are touchscreens. Stylii only for PDAs, people!

My pet peeve currently is all these peeps with the NF7-2500-Corsair combo...checks sig...oops.

i am surprised these havnt been posted yet.

when friends, family, loved ones touch your mouse and keyboard with their greasy unwashed hands. when they eat at your computer, after you repeatedly tell them not to. when you let your brother use your computer and when you come back theres lotion all over....... and the keys feel a little sticky. also when he loads your computer with spyware infested porn

Lol, if the rest are like me, the reason it wasn't said before was because most of us do eat and drink at our PCs even though we all know we absolutely should not (I still occasionally dread spilling something and it flying right into that big fan on the side of my case...)

Oh, and on the spyware thing, I have to agree there minus the porn part. It seems like whenever someone borrows someone else's pc for a day or two they have to install their favorite instant messenger or whatever. Now if only more people used forums like us d-:

The 13 or so year old kid who comes to a lan party with a half built PC and tried to build it off from an old crappy Emachine.......mother of god!

Not to mention people mounting their hard drive vervical just like there emachine...

People who act like they know it all about computers, pissees me off. I always step in just to make them look stupid.

My school's computers all have windows XP pro and the idiots left the Administrator un passworded so anyone smart enough can get in and screw up all the settings for that one computer. People who do it think their an Uber leet hacker. Umm...Yeah. Then I must be the King of all hackers since I got into your account and deleted all your files.

Haha, that's awsome!

Anyway, i have quite a few, but ill only list a couple pet peeves.

First off, people who do not understand the concept that "the computer is more then the processor". I always hear my local librarians bitching about how they just bought new computers and how they were "suposed" to be very fast..... when they don't even have a full 128mb of ram on win 2000.
My pentium III 0.8ghz plays games much faster then my dads AMD 1800+..... for obvious reasons (video card and the such).

Next, are the people who get suckered into banner ads / pop-up ads that are made to look like a windows dialog box.

I HATE people who bash older computers. They think there is no purpose in life for a pentium 2..... so basically i hate people who take computers for granted.

I work at my local high school, reparing/fixing computers... and i hate people who break them. The kids at my school are soo disrespectful to them......................
I will find whole tests stuffed in a floppy drive, cd-rom doors broke, mice without balls, bad words written all over the computers, and other random stuff!!!!!!

I also hate Dell, walley computer associates, and alienware.

What is worse, then buying a shitty dell from Dell, and then having to talk to the TECHIES they outsourced to INDIA? nothing wrong with india, but when you can't understand what the TECHI is saying.... there is a problem. (dell tech support is probably the worse ive ever dealt with recently... they used to be "OK" about 4 years ago though).

p.s., i also hate people who download a piece of software(like a game hack), and automatically think they are "hackors".

I know I might get some flack on this one. I hate when people say "Apple Sucks". Apple doesn't suck, just because you can't move around the OS doesn't mean it sucks. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean you should hate it. Just remember, everytime you boot in Windows, your using a pirated version of Mac's OS.

I have to say I was guilty of this until I used Mac OSX. I still hate OS9. Now I have a powerbook and LOVE it =)

*edit* Oh and I hate those people that start reading a thread and quote something from the first page even thogh there are 9 pages of posts just cuz they forgot how long the thread was.

ya I'm not the smartest but I live with it every day.

I'll let that one pass because im in a good mood.

Oh, i thought you were talking about me, because i quoted from the first page also.

Yeah, well sometimes there is a perfectly valid reason to quote from the first page anyway such as because by the time you hit page 3 (or 9 even) people have probably forgotten the exact text that was on that first page and it makes it harder to discuss that particular thing.

tho is kinda rewarding, my moms friend comes over, and I kinda am that kinda person that feels bad when he says mean stuff , but It was kinda rewardning when she saw my case, and said wow thats really cool, shes like 45ish ish, but I was kinda cool that I know something that someone else don't

granted she don't know alot about computers, she knows enough to get by, but i was kinda cool

Oh yea? Increased voltage = increased heat. Ever hear of 'Quantum Tunneling"?As the heat increases the transitors move apart slightly, causing them to miss and slam into the silicon.

Some of this has been brought up in the thread, but from personal experiance at LANs...

1) The "CS GAWD" - Has a top of the line system 3+ GHz P4, 1 GB PC9999, 9800XT w/ 256 mb, watercooled, 10K rpm SATA Drives raided, <16ms LCD... and plays CS 1.5 "because steam sux and so does BF and UT because they are not realistic, and so does everyother game" AND has CS mods for more CS variety...
(no, nothing against CS, I'll play, but there are too many other games out there)

2) The "Reinstall Windows Goober" - system total disarray, barely boots up, needs to reinstall Windows and always forgets install disks.

3) The "no time to deal with wiring" - Has a $300 case, window, lights, mid to high end components, runs well BUT zero time has spent on wiring and looks like smeg inside the case - and wonders why system runs hot. LAN staff attacks case, cleans up wiring (couple hours, yah, THAT bad) and suddenly system is runing 10c cooler.

4) The "all talk no play" - you know the one I'm referring to... goes on and on and on about thier gaming exploits and 'beating this game, beating that game" but NEVER ACTUALLY PLAYS ANYTHING BUT SINGLE PLAYER WHILE AT THE LAN

oh, my list can go on and on - 99% of the peeps at my LANs are great (like most of you.. hehe) but there is always ONE.

Peace,
Tim

ut2k4 runs gr8 on a gf2mx. Why did i try? Shits n giggles. I imagine if its ok on a gf2 then it should be fine on a rad 7k. (though ut2k4 runs better than 3k)

Hrm, about that P2... A couple of years ago, I hd a P2-233 that I underclocked to 166MHz. Yeah, you heard me right, even though I had a 1.4GHz T-Bird in my main PC, my secondary PC was an underclocked P2. d-: Actually, I had a legitimate reason for this. I am something of a retro gamer at times (still working on Gabriel Knight 2 for example) and didn't have a single game that couldn't run on a 166 (well, detected at 180 something by most things due to P2 being so much more powerful than P1, but the multiplier was definitely set to make it 166) or at least any that did normally worked fine with the help of the Voodoo 2 accelerator (which I actually still have for some unknown reason though I have nothing else from back then.) The reason I underclocked it was so I didn't have to fool with those stupid CPU slowers in the programs/games that crashed on CPUs over 200MHz or so, especially since those things never quite worked right at all anyway. I still kind of miss that PC and all those games... *sigh* Oh well, I still have a bunch, but now I have to use a P1-75MHz laptop for anything I can't run in NTVDM with the help of VDMSound (no, I can't afford to dual boot, besides, DOS support for this hardware is few and far in between...) Unfortunately, that leaves a small gap for some things I'm really wanting.

So, yeah, I appreciate old hardware. d-:

EDIT: Lol, btw. How do you people feel about someone who takes their PC to a lan-party and it's just about the ugliest PC ever? Eg, I have holes here and there, a few wires sticking out, a 4" radioshack fan poorly mounted and sticking out (making a few people afraid of loosing a finger or two,) electrical tape covering a few holes and empty slots (lost the plastic things,) and a little modified thing where I have taken two of those plastic things, glued them together, cout out a large hole in the center, mounted a normal case fan in there, and while I was at it, moved a couple of the USB connectors to it (giving this old case front usb ports...) Lol, I wish I could show you people some pictures of just how horrible my pc looks now...

Want to trade? I'll throw in a roll of electrical tape free with it. (Have I mentioned the number of wires spliced to this or that on the inside?)

Oh yeah, and thanks to my new video card hsf, now it glows blue and you can see it through the side fan d-:

2k4 dies siftware rendering, and yes, i've run 2k4 on a radeon 7000, and is actually half decent

Well thank you so much for bursting my bubble. I was all proud it ran so smoothly on my card... d-:

You need a fast proc to run that in software hehe i agree. Id say a 2400+ or p4 2.4 at least.

I hate it when people list every single bit of their system in their sig, including the type of mouse they have. And I'm afraid of people who name their computers; not even normal names like "Sally" or "Michael," but weird, semi-leet names.

I also hate it when people *cough* think that they know better than I do what's wrong with my system. Now, that's not saying that I know more than they do about hardware; more than likely most everybody who tries helping me knows more about hardware than I do (with a few obvious exceptions to that rule), however, since you haven't been using my system for the past 18 months, you don't know what BIOS revision I'm using and whether it has issues with AGP8x or not. If I already know my video card is borked, why would you insist on trying to fix that, rather than just explaining if there's any fix that will get it to stop being so unstable.

And I hate the people who will interpret the above as me saying, "I know more about computers than you!" and will then bitch about my ignorance in a stunning display of high school social tendencies. But that's not very hardware-related.

People that ask me whats the point of having a rig as powerful as mines which isnt that powerful

Hell, you've got to come up with something for a hostname :D
(Although I'll agree that there's a definite limit you can pass before it gets pretentious.)
Now, if someone did name their computer like a person, I'd be much more scared.

Now, what do I hate about hardware... For one, I hate The Graphics Card Confusoplies (GF 4 MX). I mean WTF?

About general computer-related things:

I hate being the free tech support guy, on-call 24/7, 365 days per year. This stopped, I charge 10 Euros per hour, the two computer stores in town are at 30 and 35, respectively.

This has made me hate people who stiff me. I had a situaton once where I was promised to be give 50 bx if I fix a comp that has an important Presentation on its HD. In the end, I find out the vid card's crapped out (old tnt2), and the owner had somehow managed tu fsck up win 98 in the process of trying to get the computer to run. So I slap an old GF1 in there, charge the woman 10€ for it, and present her my total bill, $40, the card + 3 hour's work. She gives ma a 20 and says "I coulda done that myself."

At this point I reach into the still-open case and pull out the P3. I quote myself: "Installing that will cost 20€". .....I ramble...

I hate it when people ask "What's the point of having three monitors?" and also "What's the point in writing your notes on a Tablet PC rather than pen and paper?"

I also hate when I sell someone a piece of hardware, and they think that it comes with lifetime free tech support from me, for every piece of hardware they own.

YES! that majorly sucks! i tell people it's "AS IS" and i will install/support it for extra $$.

here's a tip for all freelance techs, make them pay you something (I usually charge 20-30%) BEFORE you start working...i do, and i never get shorted. If they don't want to pay you to start, simply don't do the work. If they can't pay, they can live without their computer ;)

I don't know if this was mentioned before but, I hate people who thinks a computer with, for example, dual 2.0 GHZ CPU's runs at 4 GHZ.

I really hate people who think a computer is twice as fast because it has twice the clock frequency, people who think that MHz is all it's about.

i dont know if this has been said or not but...

i hate it

when people who know a lot take advantage of people who do not know as much and make fun of them. as if its a cool thing to do.

or when people talk about how much they hate PEOPLE that blah blah blah.... this deosnt make them a bad person, they just made a mistake....so you should hate it WHEN people blah blah....

also if people are sucked in by best buy, etc. people into buying things, and then when someone who knows about it says HAHAHAHAH THAT SUCKS FOR YOU, IM SO MUCH MORE ROXERS THAN YOU, when ll the person was trying to do was get something that works for them, and since they didnt know better they listened to the employee.

PEOPLE A LOT OF TIMES ARE IGNORANT ON PURPOSE, THEY WANT THE BEST JUST AS MUCH AS YOU DO.

AND THEY CAN BUY WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT TO PLAY WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT.

leave them alone, if playing counterstrike on a 9800xt makes them feel better, more power to them. as long as they know that its wasted money

....i hope this makes sense and wasnt too long sry

1) buying a Lian-Li case with a side window and putting LED fans in it, does not count as a mod.

2) System specs of a new dell/gateway/whatever:

3.4GHz P4EE
2048MB RAM
4x 74GB Raptors
ATi 9800XT
Sound Blaster Analigy 10,000
2x DVD-RW
250w PSU

what is wrong with the above system?

3 )F-Lock on new logitch or microsoft keyboards.

4 ) one button mice ( that means you apple ) Seriously, I like Macs. But why cant apple just include a two button scroll-mouse, rather than making me go out and buy a intellimouse or something and then install the craptacular mac version of the software.

5) cheap digital cameras that make no adjustment for light.

6) hard drives that make a high-pitched whine.
