ok here are my 2 worst hardware pet peeves. usually theres 1 at every lan party i attend.

first. guys have top of the line systems execpt one thing. a crappy video card. guy has a brand new amd64 fx51 and has a pci nvidia 5200 i think it was and wonders why ut2k4 dont run smooth.

next is the guy who just spent 4 grand on his machine but doesnt game just comes to the lan to show it off and only cares about is his 3dmark score.

any other of yours hardware pet peeves?

Overpriced POS machines like those Filter mentioned.
People who think <insert platform here> is superior because <inane argument, usually SPEC results>.
 
The kid who's parents buy him everything yet he has no idea what it does or how to use it. "I Have a fx53, 9800xt, and 4 raptors" (and i'm only 13 w/o a job)

People who brag about little/ usless things "my dell has a fx5200" and "I have a 40gb hdd"

And people (non computer "geek") asking stupid questions like "is that a COMPUTER?" and "why is there a window?"

I agree with the people that buy like fx 5200's and stuff. Or the people that spend more for a 256 MB graphic card just to play games that probably don't even take up 64 megs...
 
People who act like they know it all about computers, pissees me off. I always step in just to make them look stupid.

My school's computers all have windows XP pro and the idiots left the Administrator un passworded so anyone smart enough can get in and screw up all the settings for that one computer. People who do it think their an Uber leet hacker. Umm...Yeah. Then I must be the King of all hackers since I got into your account and deleted all your files. :rolleyes:

1. someone who buys an fx5200 to play far cry
2. someone who buys a 9800xt to play counterstrike
 
I hate anyone who doens't build their own computers because "It's too hard" or "I can save money by buying a prebuilt"

oh another thing, I hate people when they think any 128MB video card is good.
 
People I know that go around and say "I have an XP", "I have a Windows 98"....I always say, you can try to run Windows XP on a Pentium 1, then it is a "Windows XP" but will it run well. Also, people think "I have a pentium 4, my pentium 4 is better than all..."
 
my pet peeve is my friend and his pentium fanboyness. i have a barton 2500+ over clocked to 3200+, or 2205 mhz. hes has a pentium 4 2.6 ghz.

'lolz mine is still 400 mhz faster so its obviously superior'.

'just because you 'overclocked' it doesnt make it as fast as a REAL 3200+' (that one bothers me)
 
i love the 128mb video card one thats great. i see that one all the time too.
 
I hate Aleinware, overprieced peices of crap. Ugly cases too.

I hate the dumb idiots at best buy who think they know what they are talking about and, who trys to sell an AMD 64fx-51 to a guy who just wants to surf the web and do word processing. And then when I have a ligitmite question they can't answer it, cause they don't know jack. :mad:

I know I might get some flack on this one. I hate when people say "Apple Sucks". Apple doesn't suck, just because you can't move around the OS doesn't mean it sucks. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean you should hate it. Just remember, everytime you boot in Windows, your using a pirated version of Mac's OS.

LOL! OMG, I think I might have to put that in my signature, but then I'd have to remove some of the other junk (no, I'm not trying to brag on the crappy junk I have in my PC, it makes it really easy to discuss issues/etc since my specs are always right there.)

Funny thing about that, according to benchmarks, my current system beats the crap out of a P4 2.4GHz at least and maybe even that. Ok, benchmarks aren't 100% accurate for real life situations, but... Still, it's worth something especially considering that the P4 people get that SSE2 and stuff like that that AMDs don't usually have (or at least not mine) thrown in there which helps them with the results (actually, come to think of it, in anything that doesn't take advantage of those things, the P4s must really suck.)


Anyway, probably my biggest pet peeve (similar to one of the others) is that people like my dad will have this nice setup, the P4 with an 800MHz FSB, two LCDs hooked up to a dual DVI video card, an ultra-fast and positively gigantic HD (ok, not a raptor, but still, much better than the hand-me-downs that I get) and so on. And here I am still using an old mb and cpu (which apparently can't be overclocked very far at all without severe instability) a single old CRT that gives me a headache on those rare occasions I play a game that insists on 640 or 800 @ 60Hz (it makes a noise that could kill a dog.) I mean, if they have so much money to blow on crap they don't need, why don't they just donate a few of those nice things they have to those of us of lesser means...
 
Mines proably people who look down on hardware when not knowing what its good for, and even worse people who say "that sucks" Even though they've never seen it in action, or owned/used one.
 
I hate people who are afraid to overclock.

I hate people who think that prebuilt namebrand computers actually differ from one another. "Dude, Dell's are WAY better than Compaq's. They're 80 gigabytes!" Assholes.
 
i cant stand people who thinkg their 3ghz p4 is going to kick my comps ass with its 128mb of ram. thats always fun(ny)
 
you shouldnt hate people who are afraid to overclock. things can and sometimes do go bad when you overclock.

Seriously. I don't have the money to replace a fried proc. And I don't see the need, its not ENOUGH performance boost to risk wasting a few hundred dollars.
 
I hate it when people my age think that I could never possibly build a computer, and then tell me my computer sucks because their parents bought them a $3000 prebuilt, and i had a $400 budget, and my computer still performs roughly about the same as theirs. I hate them. I also hate the other people who buy premodded-prebuilts, and tell me their computer is better, and looks better than mine, and gets better temps than mine, oblivious to the fact all their cables/wires are clearly visable through windows, they only have 1 fan, and its a prebuilt. that peeves me the most... I also hate others who think they know way more about computers than me just because their older... then when i ask them a question just say "that has nothing to do with computers." (or they say CPU instead of computer)

People that try and argue with you about hardware configurations, and network settings.

"Its auto-sensing, that means that it will select if the cable is a cross over, or not"

You can't or don't want to correct them and when you try and do it gently you can't because they just wont listen.

I gotta go with non-tech people asking questions. Although as someone who has the coolest and fastest computer at a LAN (hey what can I say, I'm awesome) reexplaning all the mods and the stats every few minutes got to be really tiring. I should make flyers and carry them with my computer in case people ask at LANs

My biggest has to be the people who say:

Your hardware can run better games than Counterstrike, why did you waste your money on better hardware if thats what you play and why are you still playing it?


Maybe because I also like to try new games, and have yet to find many that are good.

Another pet peeve about hardware is this fixation with sound blaster (read: creative labs).

They cater to the masses, and they suck you in. Then provide buggy drivers, and inferior hardware. I can't stand Creative Junk.

People who spend way too much on their computer and don't use/need the technology. I know a guy who just spent $3000 on his computer to scan and edit pictures. And another guy who buys a top of the line Dell. For no reason other than just to have top of the line.
 
I also hate people who say "Well, that barton 2500+ is only 1.8 ghZ... My Pentium 3 is 1.8 ghZ... My computer's just as fast as that!"

And people who are afraid to overclock, or think you can't get any speed increase from it. I'd rather run a 2.4c at 3.6 ghZ than 2.4. It's worth it.

I also agree that the people who bash games such as Counter-Strike because it's older are annoying. Gameplay is what I care about, not just eyecandy. Personally, I have yet to find a game that I love playing as much as I loved CS. UT2004 is pretty close, but just not the same.

no, it's FASTER, because you have more memory bandwidth....

I just think it's funny that a brand-new Dell with enough RAM still feels so much slower than my machine, even when I'm on really old hardware...HOW does Dell bog down their computers that much?

i also hate the ppl w/ pentiums that think their computer is better then my xp @ 2.2Ghz.

i also hate the moron who makes a huge mistake and hurls $2k at a computer that sux major ass, he picked some expensive el cheapo mobo and a mid range vid card to go with it. also, the moron got 2*256 of ram and somehow he managed to put in one stick UPSIDE DOWN :eek: so yea, i hate computer nubs that talk like they know
 
My Hardware Pet peeve is when going to BestBuy an over hearing a salesperson say "You only need such and such for you computer, you'll never need or use that much processing power or have the need for that much memory this computer right here will suit your needs and it will save you $$$$". I always think that when the person buys that computer home, brings the computer home and trys to play the latest game or uses a computer intensive program such as AutoCad or Vegas 4 and it doesn't work at all or is slow as molasses. I can just picture that person's expression and how angry he/she is getting at that salesperson at that particular moment.

I tend to disagree with people who say this particular person doesn't use his/her computer to the fullest and thusly doesn't need to have that much computing power. Well that might be true at the given moment, but things change where the person might get interesting in video editing, decide to game on it, or something that taxes the computer to the fullest. I feel it's better to be safe than sorry, especially if the person buys a prebuilt and I was the salesperson who sold him/her the computer. I wouldn't want that person to come charging back into me a week later and start shouting at me - "YOU SOLD ME A PIECE OF CRAP!!!".

I think that he means that the system will crash first. Most OCed system will die out, and not post. Most burn up's have to do with the HSF unit not being installed properly. Now there are times where you can toast an CPU by overclocking, but its rare.

This is a funny thread...yes all of the above piss me off......but ya know what? I hardly ever argue with people...I just shake my head and say "oh" and "uh huh"...basically cause I dont give a crap and I dont feel like looking like a computer nerd in a public place when its unnecessary.

I hate:

1. Haters that sneer at "generous-spenders" who buy the latest-and-greatest regardless of need. For all the good the generous-spenders do for the overall hardware industry (primarily subsidizing development of technologies that eventually trickles down to everyone), everyone should just be grateful. And it's obvious that all the hating is only thinly-veiled jealousy. I mean, what direct/indirect harm does someone who doesn't use their super-pimp rig to its full potential do to you or the industry? What justifies your hatred?

2. Elitists who dog on others for their lesser technical literacy. Unless you work in Tech Support and are harassed daily by irritated lesser-literates exhibiting a bad case of entitlement, then you have no right for disdain. (The tech guy/gal has no right either, but at least the feeling is understandable in his/her case.) All of you were once newbies yourself as well, and you were no better nor more/less deserving of disdain than all the noobs out there now. People who have to shit on perceived lessers just to feel better about themselves are plain lame.

3. Intel/AMD/Apple/nVidia/ATi fanboys.

4. $20/per inkjet cartridges with the lifespan of an adult mayfly.

5. Unstable hardware.

6. Floppy disks. (Might qualify as "unstable hardware.")
