Halo: Campaign Evolved (remake)

It's certainly pretty, but it still looks exactly the same gameplay wise. All the Halo games were a slog, but especially the first one.

I guess since all of 343/Halo Studios' efforts to continue the series have all floundered, they have to do this.

I've never played them because I never had an Xbox (pretty much the only console I never had that was worth having) and when I built my first gaming PC in 2005 my first games to play on it were HL2, Doom 3, Far Cry, then I played Halo and it seemed so slow and clunky after those games. My son has played through them though with his friends in co-op, which is the only way I can envision playing through them now.

I'm actually excited about this now that I've thought about it.

It will be extremely easy to mod.

It's Unreal Engine 5 on PC. There isn't a more moddable engine.
There are a ton of people that passionately care about the true original Halo Combat Evolved experience.

Also everything they showed was running on an Xbox. It actually didn't perform that bad considering that. It'll perform a hell of a lot better on a high end PC.

Some if this looks really good, but I'm still expecting to be disappointed.

It would be really cool if they had split screen co-op on PC, but I doubt they will. I would love to play this co-op with my son. I guess I'll have to buy 2 copies.

I don't even think there's any co-op at all.

On one hand I played this twice, so I'm not interested. But I do miss single player FPS games... so maybe I might play this. I can probably finish it in a week if I put 2 hours a night into it. There are sections I found tedious in the original though.

If you played through with the remastered graphics you goofed.

Supposedly they're changing the Library level which is pretty much universally agreed on as the worst level. They're also adding in some sergeant johnson levels or something. I'm personally not really excited for them and don't know how long they're supposed to be.

A first look at 3rd Person gameplay from the Halo: Campaign Evolved mission, The Silent Cartographer, on a pre-release build. Enabled with the all-new 'Perspective' Skull, this third-person camera angle allows players to experience iconic Halo missions like never before...

I played through both. The Library level is the one I was referring to. I like them revamping some parts and adding a bit though I fear it may stray too far from the original.

This guy got to play early and gave an assessment. I think I'll agree with what he said.

The TLDW is he thinks the original is better.
The biggest issues:
Sometimes the AI kind of bugs out. - hopefully that gets fixed
There is no health. That removes a lot of what the original campaign was designed around.

Then there are a bunch of minor things like the weapon sounds just not being that good.

But overall the graphics are actually pretty good, the vehicles are good, and most of the game is good, just not as good as the original.

I think a lot of this stuff is fixable with mods. I don't think it will be long after release before we start seeing a bunch of mods to make it more like the original.
I thought it would be much worse than what I've seen so far.

On XBSX|S for split-screen both players need to have a unique Microsoft account. But they don't have to be paid accounts, that's only for online play, as usual. PS5 though, both players need a PS Plus account (which means paid account)! And those accounts must be linked to Microsoft accounts. So nothing like the options we had back in the X360 days, where a 2nd player can join in on split-screen without even needing an account (or rather by using a "guest" account). They just want to make split-screen gaming a pain in the @ss. But at least there is split-screen, unlike Halo 5 and 6.

And then of course as we already know, no split-screen on PC.

Also saw this: "To ensure that the narrative remains as faithful to the original game as possible, the personalized customization options you choose will not show up during cutscenes." In Halo Reach and I think at least one other game in Halo MCC, your customized character shows up in story cutscenes, which was neat. Not a deal breaker to not have it though.

Oh huh, split-screen co-op players can each have their own difficulty, in a way, with the difficulty modifiers.

The 3 new prequel missions will be available right from the start.

I know that people like to hate on remakes, but I think this is one that shows its more than that. Its a retelling of that story, but we already know there is way more content than the original Halo. Im looking forward to giving it a whirl.

No health bars or health packs like the original. It's just full regeneration.

It will have split screen coop on consoles but not PC.
The original had a health bar and health packs, and the shield recharged very slowly. Halo 2 was when they got rid of the health bar since they greatly increased the recharge time and rate of the shield with the idea being to have the player in the action more continuously. Too bad Halo 2 was a piece of shit.

Yeah that's what I was saying.

I'm pretty sure I'll agree with this guy: 6.8/10

removing health, adding sprint, AI not behaving as well, changing the wapons, just all kind of break the way the game is supposed to play and it isn't as good.

It feels uncanny, like you're playing an immitation of Halo CE and not the real thing.

I agree with most, but sprint is needed. The original felt slow and floaty. Made sense given it was designed for a controller and sub 30 frame rates. But it just does not play well now, or even on a PC when I first played it many years ago.

So not worth indulging in? Is it free on game pass? I haven't been following this at all so no clue.

The actual release date isn't for 4 days unless you pay extra to get it early.

I will definitely not pay extra. I'm still debating even buying it. I probably will cave in and buy it on the actual release. I'm still optimisitic modders will fix the game with the original health system, no sprint, fixed AI, etc.

I saw someone show the $300 special edition that came with a chief statue and cortonna disk, it looks terrible.

Never was a fan of Halo but I will give it a spin when GoW comes to Gamepass.
Gears of War is on Game Pass.

Master Chief Collection is also on Game Pass if you want to play the original.
