So if I want more Half lIfe, which I been waiting for years for a new game. I have to go buy a $600 VR headset? I get wanting to grow the market, but I really do hope they at least allow the game to be played without a VR headset...

I think it's being built from the ground up for VR so I doubt it.
I remember having my friend call me in sick to high school the day HL2 was released.
I don't have VR and it makes me sad I won't be able to play this, but I trust Valve not to half-ass this.

You can get a used HMD for like $200-225.

And they wouldn't be growing the market if they wasted time on a flat monitor version, since that wouldn't compel VR HMD purchases.

Plenty of other games out there if you just want to be entertained by mindless SP campaigns.

I'm hoping it's a full AAA awesome game redefining experience because I'm getting bored of the same old. This would definitely compel me to grab a VR headset.

Is this because 1 thread isn't enough?
I'm surpassed there isn't one in Physics Processing. Apparently they spent a lot of time on realistic door hinge AI. Not since Resident Evil 1 has that gotten as much love

(1) every VR title to this point has been a little more than a tech demo, or simulation. Of course we're going to be suspicious of how much "AAA" we''re talking. The extra developer time needed to build a good VR game means the deep content tends to get tossed, so we will, see if Valve is willing to push that boundary.

(2) after fifteen years of hoping optimistically, we're tired of taking the bait every time there's a rumor of "new Half-Life universe game!" They've buried their own fucking franchise, and they're going to have to go through the trouble to grow the hype again FROM SCRATCH.

Are we interested? Maybe. But they have to PUT UP OR SHUT UP,because we're tired of the hype.

Best-case, it's Half-Life 2 Episode 3, but VR-only. Worst-case, it's another VR Tech Demo with Half-Life-inspired characters. EITHER WAY, IT'S FIFTEEN YEARS TOO LATE FOR MOST FANS TO CARE.
I gotta disagree with you here on point 1, atleast on the Oculus side of things. We have a few games that are much more than just tech demos (lone echo, asgards wrath come to mind quickly). I agree we have way to many tech demos and 2 hour games but there are some truly good VR games out there.

IMO the best place to go is games that support flat screen and VR modes with proper VR support built from the beginning like Tetris effect.

Just what I want: A used hat that has been around someone else's sweaty, lice-infested head. Buying a used HMD seems akin to buying used underwear, to me. Sure, you can clean it, but it's already been touching someone else's junk for thousands of hours.

Except, I'm very picky about my RPGs/adventure game. this is why you can't just point to TWO GAMES and say LOOK AT ALL THEM THERE CHOICES!

I need more than just a single complex game per-year to justify a purchase like this. Steam gives me hundreds of decent games to choose from! in the same time VR brings me one.to choose from!

And you're assuming I want a sweaty, bulky headset on my head for hours at a time. I don't care how good the n "VR Experience" is, I won' t wear VR for normal gaming until it's as comfortable to wear as my pair of wrap-around sunglasses. Some of us ALREADY get overheated when playing energetic games/sports, and don't need additional help from a full-head-suit.

Not just to you, and I'm not a germaphobe by any measure. Think of wearing a catcher's mask, or a football or fencing helmet that's been shared. And a HMD is going to have way more porous materials and padding than that.

Well, germ-phobes can buy the new version (Odyssey+ $250-299) or buy aerosol rubbing alcohol for $8.

The delta between new/used isn't a big amount depending on the HMD.

That's perfectly fine, I was just pointing out that you were wrong in the post I quoted when you claimed there were NO games that weren't just tech demos. If VR isn't your thing that's cool, I've gotten a few hundred hours out of my rift cv1/rift s between just Pavlov, rec room, beat saber and all the "tech demos". I enjoy VR and don't mind wearing the HMD but its ok if that's not your thing

I purchased a leather cover for my rift s specifically because of germs lol. Being able to wipe it down after someone else wears the headset makes me feel alot cleaner :p

Wow, that looks pretty damned good. One thing I couldn't discern from this trailer, though, is are we going to have full locomotion? If not then it disappointingly won't be worth my time.

Me in 2004: "I have to install Steam to play this? Fuck that."

At least Steam was free. See you in maybe 5 years, HL:A.

Is this the actual last game of the series or the 10th remake of the original?

I hope the enemy is going to be at least smart at the AI in F.E.A.R.

Looks like it still has the HL2 look/vibe, which is a good thing to me (and the G-man is back). Still hung-up on the vr-only thing, though. Am disappoint.

Looks badass - I'm excited.

Dunno if I want to spend the money on Index controllers, though.

Well looks like a VR headset is in my future though probably not index as I'm not ready to drop a grand on VR. I'll probably get a discount oculus headset off eBay.

It's Half-Life 1.5. Takes places somewhere in between.

I haven't tried the latest Rift, but I can't say enough good things about Samsung Odyssey+. They did a great job almost completely neutralizing screen door effect, and its OLED screens are gorgeous. On sale right now for $250. Hands down sweet spot in value-for-money I think.

Oculus also isn't a bad way to go, since you can play their exclusives (Asgard's Wrath, etc) without Revive (a workaround to make Oculus exclusives work on everything else).
