Well multiplier overclocking is not taxing to the motherboard as much as increasing BCLK. It's a sort of "safe" or "easy" overclocking.

Anyway that is around 185 BCLK if using the stock multiplier value. I have pushed to 170 on my i5 750 and yes you're right at that point you're taxing the original PSU too much.

Anyone overclocking on this size systems should be very careful. After getting a stable value lowering voltage to get lower power consumption is a MUST.
 
So according to Anand's review, the H50 will not fit...anybody know what cooler WILL fit in a SG05 with graphics card in the PCIX slot?
 
The H50 will fit, just get a washer thicker than the transistor on the backside of the board, problem solved.
 
4+2 power is not 6 phase power...so it's not anymore reliable on overclocking than the DFI board (it says power circuitry should handle 95w, DFI handles 110w)

Of course some people have already done better, but always remember with overclocking your mileage may vary. Maybe the board has better safety features that allow you to overclock without killing the board.

So which is the best OCing mITX board then? Going by which handles the most watts.
 
I've been asking the same myself

DFI is supposed to handle 110w, anand review says it should handle 95w, I'm not clear on that yet.

This review has it running at 4+ GHZ with an HT enabled 875K, but BCLK is just 150Mhz which is about the same as my DFI overclock on an i5 750, the unlocked processors make it easier to push without pushing the board too much I guess.

DFI should be able to handle 180 BCLK on i5 quads, Dunno about max BCLK on this board yet but anand didn't have a good result overclocking the quads.

I just hope this one is a safer board to overclock, better protection, I prefer it to be protected and less overclockable. Of my first batch of DFI boards one died due to ABS II auto overclocking which is pretty ridiculous.
 
I think at this point no one should go with DFI. They are out of the consumer market now and I don't want to have to worry if I need to RMA my board will they even be able to be contacted.
 
It's still not clear if that is true or not. some sites report otherwise. But yes you are right.
 
How does this on/off charge feature of the board's USB ports work? I downloaded something from Gigabyte's site and installed it, but it looks like it just installed a driver, but no actual program to control the on/off charge.

it just means that using the usb 3 ports, you can still charge your ipod or whatever even if the computer is off. its not a big deal, as some laptops have been doing that for a while. the good thing about it is that you can charge 3 times as fast as normal usb power. at least thats what they claim.

Should be a nice feature for me. Not being able to recharge my Razer Mamba overnight without having the computer on kind of sucks :p

Also I'm using G-Skill F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM and running at the rated speed/timings/voltage results in random crashes, mainly when playing flash video. Running at 1333, 1.5v and slower timings fixes the issue. Could something like that be fixed with a bios update? The ram doesn't error when tested and I used it for a year with not a single crash on an ASUS board.

what cpu and ram are you using? what does the board automatically set them to when you try to do 4GHz? can you boot at 4GHz but its not stable or are you not even able to boot at 4GHz? and finally, whats your maximum stable overclock youve achieved so far? (these might not all be helpful for diagnostics, but im also just somewhat curious. :D)
 
oh, and to answer your question, the bios will change the color of the text when it gets too high for the board. i think pink is lowest the warning section. go to the last setting before that other color, and then if it works, start lower each one a few steps at a time until you find the minimum settings that it is still stable at. ive found on recent board that auto is pretty good, and it will adjust to whatever you need. personally, i found that if my oc wasnt stable, raising those voltages didnt help any. i was using an i7 860 though.
 
i5 760. I am sitting here and I'm fine with it for the most part.

BSODs in SC2 once in a blue moon. Prime is only stable about 45 minutes.

VTT is bumped a bit, PCH is stock, i think 1.050v or so.
 
i dont see why not. its just an 860 with a multi of 19 instead of 21 and the ability to be doubled up and ECC'd. all other xeon processors seem to work ok in the boards designed for their core counterparts. why do you need it to? doesnt it cost more than the higher-clocked i7 860?

holy hell why would you want that? you can get a 4GB stick with lower timings and faster for a fraction of that cost. like here. and no that wouldnt work for your i3 because its ECC registered which means you would need a xeon cpu to use it. it would give you nothing useful and cost a ton more money.

yeah but 5x as much? wow. when i was in europe last summer stuff was like 1.5-2x as expensive. in budapest it was almost comparable. are you in the czech republic? thats not too far out there. i cant think theres nowhere that will ship 2x4gb ddr3 to czech republic for under $1600...

i have an 860 which is basically a 750 with hyperthreading and could only get to 3.4ghz. :/ i can try turning off ht and seeing how much higher i can oc if no one has a 750 with this board.
 
That would be great if you can although it won't be daily use test but limited OC check. If you do, can you turn off HT and set multi at 20 so it's close to i5 750?

It will be good since you also have H50 so I can check temp too.

yeah i couldnt get it to boot at all past 3.5 with any settings. its pretty frustrating really. my temps are fine, and i have a fan on the sb so im not sure why it maxed out so low. i did get the cpu used for $165 about 2 months ago cuz it had a dark spot on one pin, so maybe thats the problem? i always use ht and i always use speedstep or whatever its called now, so those both affect the overclocking a bit. i also used the stock tim from the h50 so im gonna try reseating it and messing with voltages again in the future, but for now 3.4GHz still maxes out everything i do (gaming and general use, no encoding or anything like that) so i havent really bothered trying to go higher. its 100% prime stable and maxes out at 70C though. im still away from home but i should be able to run some tests for you on wednesday.
 
Have you tested your CPU on different mobo? preferably one that OC good? It could well be your CPU especially if you have gotten it used(with dark spots on pins on top of that) I've always used speedstep too. Helps using little less electric but for you if you want to test it out, I would turn off HT, speedstep and turbo and try again and see what happens.

As far as stock TIM on H50, I saw it was pretty good and is from Shin Etsu so it really shouldn't make much difference unless you didn't install H50 right. Also, unless it's really cheap thermal grease, it should only make like 2-3'c difference anyway most of the time. I know I've used some random thermal grease that I've found that I've used before just to mount the heatsink and later used good TIM which made like 11'c difference but as said before, if it is decent one it should be like only 2-3;c difference

Hmmmmm 70'c load at 3.4GHz with H50? That seems pretty high. and Prime too instead of Linpack. I would think you will get better temp than that. It's different CPU and stock speed but I got 38-42'c depends on core with H50 running Prime. It's like 32-28'c increase OC 760MHz. If that's what it is, I guess I won't be setting mine close to 4GHz.

If I can't OC close to 4GHz due to mobo limit and also temp limit, why did I even bother selling my DFI which does 3.4GHz comportably to get this mobo :( and oh yeah, I just sold my DFI to get this mobo which should be delivered today for my almost year old build project :(

yeah i know ive been following your build. im pretty sure that the dfi will oc better than this board. i chose this one because of the price and the fact that gigabyte is still in business. ;) people have OC'd lots of dual cores to 4GHz super easy, but a quad with ht on is way different than a dual core without ht. i also havent tried to minimize vcore yet either, it just on auto. im sure if i set it manually i could get it lower but the board has just been very finicky for me and the only way i could get everything to work stable was to use auto on almost everything. and yeah its very possible that my cpu is crap, but i dont really care since i got it for so cheap and even at 3.4 its still overkill. i dont have another 1156 mobo to try it on. :/
 
:( That's sad news to me. If you've been following my build, you know how I like to buy things I never end up using and sell it again and again. :( I lost $60 on that DFI alone. :( and now there's chance that I could break even as far as OC goes. :( and I liked color of DFI more than Gigabyte too. :( Maybe I should ditch the idea of modding and just sell everything. Then when FT03 comes out(looks like it doesn't need mod to make it to my liking except where intake for CPU is) build a new PC that can OC better and no mod needed. :(

As far as googling this mobo and OC, that was problem that I've faced too. Majority of them were for dual cores and once they did with quad is either suicide OC or trying to find max OC not the max that you can use for daily use which I need.

You should try to lower your vcore though at least. lower it goes, less chance of killing your board. :)

I'm not sure if I will have time to test my new mobo tonight(heck, I didn't even had chance to test my G.Skill 2x4GB RAM either :() but I guess I'll find out how much I can OC safely when I do.

BTW, have you placed heatsink on mosfet? I've found couple of sites that showed ones you obviously have to put heatsink on but none of them were really clear about others and ones on backside.

why did you switch mobos? i think the dfi is better and i would have bought yours in fs/ft but i really wanted to have a warranty since OCing on a mini itx board is very unproven so far. why are you modding if you just want an ft03? i figured you needed a sff system and thats why you got a mitx board and a sugo case. if you can use a big case then theres no reason not to just get a 1366 system in a big fto3 and OC the hell out of it. i wanted a really small computer and i also wanted it to be cheap, which is why im making my sff build.

whats the highest youve seen anyone get with a quad? did they have ht on or off? i havent found any ocing results with an 860. no ive just had to get that rig running so i could start playing some games ive had piling up in steam. i am planning on starting a scratch build in the near future and its gonna be SMALL. when i do that i will tackle getting my oc a little higher. i have mosfet heatsinks i'll try out when i put it together. i will probably lower the vcore this week.

As far as I know, warranty doesn't cover frying a motherboard via overclocking anyway? :p
 
As you said, mitx OC is not proven yet and rather than sticking with proven OC limit of 3.4GHz for DFI, Gigabyte looked it had chance to OC more. Maybe Im wrong, maybe Im right. I'll find out.

As far as FT03 goes, I initially wanted to build this so I can take it to my brothers house to play game together but since it's been like 10 months I started my build, plan changed and no longer need for me to take it to my brothers house. What I need now is more power so FT03 was tempting since it was almost perfect for me(minus like 2-3 things). Maybe I'll sell my current build down the road and build new one but for now, I want to finish current one.

I think highest quad OC I saw with this board was 4.2GHz. Of course it's questionable for daily use and one of guy/girl here was setting his/hers to 4GHz for daily use not caring about killing board.

I'm starting to think I should try to aim for 4GHz for daily use and if it kills the board, that might be excuse to sell my modded SG06(Im sure somebody would want almost factory looking SG06 that can take full-sized video card and ATX PSU) and go with FT03 build and call it a day. I mean I like unique cases and all of my cases have been modded but it's coming to the point where I just don't have time to mess around with things like this any more. :(

I'll see what happens first and figure out what to do next. When I get time to OC mine, I'll update my work log and here for others to reference.

ok im back to work! 3 minutes of prime in at 3.5GHz and no freeze so far. havent made it through a whole pass before at 3.5, so this is good news. im gonna keep upping the bclk until it freezes then optimize the voltages. 100% stability is key. and i guess ill try linx since that appears to be what everyone is using now. :)

ps: im gonna use my max oc for 24/7 hax, since the board is only $100 new who cares? :D also, 2 passes down and no freeze. max temp is 76C but the fan isnt full speed.

pps: 3.6 looks good too. 3.7 does not. hopefully long term stability at 3.6 is ok.
