[H] users 7970 Overclock Results thread

The "reg" is the register, not the voltage! ALl the cards will show "174" since that's the register you're polling. The second number is what shows the ASIC leakage value. The higher that number, the lower the VID of your card may be.

When you unlock the voltage options, the voltage for your card is set to 1175 mv instantly.
To find your default voltage, you need to run afterburner without unlocking voltage control, just unlock the voltage monitoring, and look at the MV while running something light 3d (not furmark).

If you get 1140 mv, then your card defaults to 1175 mv. if you get 1010 or 980mv then it's probably a 1050mv card.

Basically, lower VID cards can NOT run at max CCC settings without increasing the voltage first. ALthough it would be nice to know if lower VID cards can overclock higher at the same voltage compared to higher vid cards.

Interesting and good catch. In afterburner mine read:

GPU1: 1.112 max and .806 min.
GPU2: 1.175 max and .850 min.

Looks as if I have one of each. I can run just short of max ccc settings. I'll unlock the voltage control and see how they do. ;)

***edit***

I just unlocked the voltage control and the max defaults to the lower card's max at 1.112v. Not the higher vid card at 1.175v.

I would consider going further, but I don't really understand what to do with Voltage and whether I should focus on core or memory increases. Although it is kind of loud already during Furmark.

Kombuster and heaven don't give a accurate stable ocs. I can be stable in lots of games but once I load crysis 2 I get artifacts. It seems the old saying can it run crysis is true again. I am running 5760x1080. My cards never seem to oc well on the core and I get high memory oc. My score goes up in heaven each time I increase. Then I play crysis 2 maxed and determine if it stable with zero artifacts. I know I can still crank the memory up and will try it some more later
 
Going to get my 7970 today and going to OC of course, but I'm just wondering how much of the memory clock is necessary and what ratio to the core clock? Seems like core clock is the main performance booster, how much memory clock do you guys know to OC? Is there some core/memory ratio?

there's no rule-of-thumb for core/mem ratio, just keep incrementing the mem clock until you see a decline in performance (error correction memory). i used both the STALKER CoP benchmark and also the Metro 2033 benchmark for mine, with Metro being more consistent. something like Heaven or 3DMark11 might work better. also you'd be surprised at how your performance keeps scaling with the memory clock. it's worthwhile to tinker with.

32C idle/47C max at full gaming load for hours. I had to jury-rig my MCW82 installation by using my own copper shim on the core. This is due to the shim on the 7970 package that makes universal blocks incompatible:


Temps are still decent though.

Also, some of you guys are getting insane RAM clocks, are you overvolting the RAM too? Or just lucky? :p
 
Well after reading above about the differing VID's and finding I have one of each I ran a quick test to find the stock upper limits of my memory. Seems both cards can handle 1575 fine. I'll bump my GPU volts to 1.175v on both cards and see if I can now max the CCC stock without stability issues. I'm using the latest Afterburner for monitoring. One oddity I've noticed is the memory usage. I use BF3 multilayer maxed out on 64 MP maps as a stress test. FM does not seem to be a good indicator any more as I can pass it w/o issues and still have stability issues in games. Anyway... AB is showing memory usage at 3113mb. Seeing as each card only has 3GB available does this mean it's reading the total of the 2 cards 6GB? :confused:

In CF memory usage is doubled, so actual is only around 1.5GB.

Which version of AB are you using? You want v2.2.0 BETA 11.

You could build your own setup for about the same cost that could include a GPU block for roughly the same cost. Watercooling isn't as expensive as most people seem to think it is, it's only when you add on bling like full cover blocks, compression fittings, etc. that the costs add up.

Yeah, the intriguing thing for me is the combination rad/reservoir/pump. I have a big case but my cabling is already iffy - I do my best to hide everything behind the motherboard plate but there are still so many wires that need to be connected it's like how am I going to find ways to fit everything and route tubes?

But it would be intriguing to see how far I could push my 7970. I think my 2500K still has some more left in it as well.

I think the error correction kicks in and when the mem clocks are too high you just get lower performance.

So even if we put our mem clocks high doesn't mean it's better.

I agree, but some of these clocks (in the 1700+ range) are so high they're way past what ECC could correct, at least on my card. At those clocks my card would completely freeze/crash the driver. I'm not in favor of overvolting the RAM, but I'm curious as to how it's working out for people who do.

Its not so easy to say that.
Lower vid cards have lower temps but we dont now if they can do more clocks than higher vid cards.

I can do 1145 core on stock voltage and my voltage under load is around 1.05v i think i have pretty good chip. Maybe with higher voltage i could see 1250/1300.
 
I have a 1.175 card. Unfortunately, I can't overclock all the way using CCC. I can get 1105/1575 at 1.181 V using a custom fan profile to keep the card under 72 C.

Increasing the voltage did not seem to help the core go higher, as I kept getting artifacts, although I did not try over 1.2 V, nor did I try ridiculous fast fan speeds as anything above 50-55% sounds like a hurricane. I need to edit my ini file to try my memory at faster speeds, as it seems like the most limiting factor is the core for me.
 
What artifacts did you get like dots?
Im interested to see what real clock artifacts look like on 7970 because i havent seen any the card would just freeze on 1200 but no artifacts :p

I can post a pic later tonight if no one else gets around to it. But I am seeing messed up textures - white dots/small white shapes. Very noticeable in the Heaven DX11 benchmark, as well as my character's clothing in Saints Row The Third. However, I never saw artifacts in Skyrim or 3dMark11.

BTW, why does SR still give crappy performance on this card (my 5850 especially gave poor results while driving)? I was expecting 60 fps maxed out, but I get 30 FPS if I do that while driving, or 40-50 fps if I turn down AA and one other option (at 1920x1200). Skyrim gives around 90-100 fps with high res textures and performance mod, Crysis 2 DX11 around 60+ fps (had v-sync on during benchmark opps), etc..
 
OK, @ 1.175 I can get 1125 on both cards, (one is 1.05 stock, one is 1.12 stock) However memory I have only pushed to 1500 so far.

Interesting, have you found any correlations yet?

Does anyone have a 1.0250V card that screams?

I tried switching the card to "1.0250V" in MSI Afterburner, it didn't change my overclock in any shape or form.
EDIT: Also doesn't change my power consumption at all either, so it must be just a reference.
 
1.3 is max safe volts from my understanding

thx for the answer, i'm running @ 1220mhz with 1.2vgpu with ok temps... so i should be fine. Do you think that i can even raise the vgpu? (i mean for daily use). My card has a default voltage of 1,112
 
You won't be able to go above 1.235v without crashing from OVP/OCP. Cards are limited to +125mV over default VID.
