Seems that high leakage cards can do more Hz with more volts and low leakage cards o/c better at default volts but withno max range Hz.

I also still don't understand why sometimes I run Furmark and fps stays at 45 and I can finish a run to check load temps. While other times it jumps to 65 fps and death when that happens.

I actually have a similar issue. I can alter the GPU and memory clocks without seeing any performance changes, even after altering the voltage. Then there are times that I get a significant boost in Furmark scores (actually, virtually identical to the numbers you posted) with some light artifacts. Any ideas on this one? I feel like my voltage changes in CCC aren't taking.
 
Testing done in Furmark 15min Burntest and Civ V

Sapphire Card (A)
2FB0 which barely makes the 1.125V VID cutoff
1200/1625 on stock voltage (have not really pushed memory)
maximum cleared value was 1205/1625 w target voltage of 1.168
no real help from over volting and crashes at 1.2V. There may be additional limitations due to old Sapphire 5970 entries which may still lurk in my registry.

Sapphire Card (B) rma-ed
unknown VID
1175/1575 (never really pushed)
did not try over-volting and RMA-ed due to stuttering and ridiculously high temps at stock voltage and settings

XFX Black Reference Cooler
2830 1.175V VID (so much for binning!)
1225/1625 stock voltage (have not really pushed memory)
Over-volting does not seem to help much when I tried 1.225V it went to 1235 on core before there was a small amount of glittering buried deep in the fur of the Furmark doughnut. 1.3V resulted in giant purple square artifacts rapidly appearing.

I restored actual voltage monitoring in AB Beta 11's hardware profiles. Vdroop under furmark is, on average, 75-100mV. Again. extra voltage does not really appear to help.

Additional observation: Clicking on the reset button in Afterburner also resets the powertune slider from +20 to 0.

A further post will follow if/when I decide to test what is purported to be an alternate BIOS from December 2011.

My record is 39 continuous hours in Solusek's Eye grinding the last several levels to the then level cap of 50 in EQ2.

I literally "lost conciousness" at the keyboard and woke up with "waffle face".

If powertune is not maxed then the card will repeatedly throttle in Furmark. You can check the GPU frequency in Afterburner and see the line graph go up and down and up down. Even overclocked settings will stay at 43-45fps. 57 is what I also got for stock settings at ~1200 you should be getting 69-71 fps.
 
Played some BF3. No artifacting at 1175/1575 but temps got up to 84C @ 49% fan speed at 1175 mv. Not too alarming, is it?

I've also read you should set powertune to 20% in CCC, but I'm not that familiar with it. Is that about accurate?

You should have seen my cable management ten years ago. :p

It's gotten a lot better, though. Not necessarily "good" but short of buying cable extensions or learning some new tricks I'm not aware of I'm not sure how much more I can do lol.

Sapphire 7970, original VID of 1.175V.

I currently have it at 1200/1600 1.3V and temps aren't bad with a °C=%fan curve. It's super noisy but I play with active noise-cancelling headphones so I don't notice.

Power consumption from the wall while playing BF3 went from ~260W to ~340W.

Also this is in a mini-ITX case. :)
 
Well, ok. Seems my card doesn't OC as well as first appeared.

Got some obvious artifacting in BF3 on the third round at 1175 core.

What's more, Anno 2070 will lock my computer up. Screen goes black, m/kb lights still on, loud buzzing noise coming out of my speakers.

After testing, definitely appears to be the core OC. Doesn't appear to do this at stock, or with only memory OC. Brought the core down to 1150 and no go.

Will try 1125. :( After that, maybe a slight voltage increase.

EDIT: Happened at 1125 core as well.
 
i got 1070mhz core on default fan settings,
after playing with Fan profiles, fan ramps to 70% by 80 degrees
this allowed me to push 1200mhz in ugene heaven (1220 artifacts)
without the fan on insane, the card hard locks and must reboot.

bf3 plays 1200mhz no worries, HOWEVER!!,
i turned my pc on later that day and another game locked time and time again. I am not sure if some setting was change by accident EG powertune, or if it was a couple of degrees hotter that night, or if it is game specific (why would this older game be more difficult then bf3?)

I am going to start heaven test from scratch again to 1200mhz, then try game by game, then try 100% fan manual, then report back here...

Anno 2070 just does not want to play nice. Seemed fine after I brought it all the way down to 1100 core (1175 mv). Then seemed fine up to 1175 after I raised the voltage to 1200 mv. Apparently not, though, because at that voltage it's now doing it at 1150 MHz as well.

EDIT: 1125 @ 1200 mv fine. 1150 @ 1225 mv not fine.

Could it be your drivers Shocked? Mine had massive artifacts until I uninstalled Windows for a clean driver install.

Anyone know how to use the power control slider set at 20% but not have CCC override my MSI afterburner's 1200mhz Overclock?

Also, in AB, I set the voltage to 1.125, but in the monitor, it shows it fluctuating at 1.038-1.05 while on load. Is this accurate? I have the latest AB beta.

VID: 1050 mV (the /rr174 switch showed me a value of 350, which puts it at 82.9%)

I only had to nudge it up to 1093 mV to have a so-far-stable 1125/1575.

Oh, this is gon' be fun. *rubs hands together in glee*

edit: seems to top out at 1200mhz / 1850mhz at 1187 mV, have to nudge it down by 25mhz each for some games though

I dunno. I installed my 7970 on a clean install, on an entirely new system actually save for the sound card and one of the three hard drives. Doesn't mean the drivers aren't having issues though I guess. How it relates to why it only happens during overclocks I'm not entirely sure.

Don't quote me on this, because I'm still trying to figure out how I'll benefit from powertune myself. But I think if you set powertune and leave the other CCC settings at default and don't touch it again, and then apply your settings in Afterburner, Afterburner should override it (I would assume except for powertune, since Afterburner doesn't appear to have a similar setting). Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Oddly enough, I've never needed to use Mobility Modder. I was using the latest mobile Catalysts straight from AMD the last time I had Boot Camp set up. Maybe I'll play around with overclocking it. :)

On the number after the colon, take the last 4 digits except for the 0 at the end (so 2e2), convert it from hexadecimal to decimal, and divide that by 1023 to get your percentage value.

You can do this either with Windows calculator by switching to the scientific/programmer view (whichever one it is that gives you checkboxes for hex/dec)

Or by googling "0xNUM in decimal" where num is the number you want to convert

For yours, you'd google the term: 0x2e2 in decimal

Google returns 0x2e2 = 738

738/1023 = 0.7214 = 72.14%

BF3 Sessions:

98-99% GPU usage on both @ 79-80 degrees C, 43% Fan Speed.
 
Pretty happy now that I've been clued in to the differing VID's. In AB I set the volts to 1.175v and I am able to run at the stock CCC (+20% power) max at 1125GPU and 1575Mem w/o issues. Temps are 72 max for the top card and 66 max on the bottom card using a custom fan profile:

Max fan usage under load is 54% for the top and 45% for the bottom. Happy camper here. BF3 with all Ultra, 4xMSAA and Post High + HBAO.. no freakin blur... hate that crap. :p Vsync on and I don't see dips under 60fps. :D

Heh, I also use my 27" iMac as an occasional monitor for games that don't have or have poor Eyefinity support.

Thats for an xfx bedd. Runs fine at 1125/1575, havent tried to go further.

Not at all noob question. We didn't all start out knowing how to do this stuff, it comes from years of practice :p

You can either do this by editing the desktop shortcut to it, or by doing the command line, whichever looks easiest.

Command line: Run cmd.exe and enter these commands (adjust the directory if you installed it somewhere else):

cd \Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner
msiafterburner /rr174

or

Edit Shortcut:

Right-click on your desktop shortcut to MSI Afterburner, go to Properties, and then in the Target box, right after the last double quote, insert a space and the switch /rr174

This basically edits the "command line" with which that shortcut starts up the program.

Click Apply, don't close this properties box just yet, and then doubleclick the shortcut. You only need to read this once, so write down the value or grab the screenshot, click the OK button, and then edit your shortcut's target box back to normal (delete the /rr174) and hit OK there so that your shortcut goes back to running Afterburner normally.

1187 mV and I topped out at 1200 mhz core, 1850 mhz memory. Any faster than that in the core and I get artifacts, even if I bump it up by 40 mV. The memory looks to start ECCing if I crank it up any faster. Furmark and all is rock solid so far. *knock on wood*

You can't put more than 1187 mv into your card. OVP/OCP will kick in. You can test that by setting the clocks to 925 mhz, and trying 1250 mv and watch what happens.

I can do 1200 stable at 1231 mv, and 1225 mhz is doable, but requires more than 1250 mv (probably around 1275 mv) but heat and having to crank the fan past 60% is too much of a issue then.

I have a 1175 mv card. 2f50.
 
I have two Asus HD 7970 with vastly different experience. The first one is pretty average, the card overclocks to 1125/1575mhz at stock voltage which by the way is 1175mv and does 1200/1600mhz with 1.2V. The second Asus HD 7970 is a little more interesting. I tried to overclock it at various speeds with 1.25-1.3V and the outcome is not good. The first card that could do 1200/1600mhz with 1.2v would not stabilize at anything higher then 1250mhz for the core at 1.3V but the second card does 1250/1600 @ 1.25V but after a while of gaming, the fan will slow down and the screens will go blank. With both cards, I have set the fan speed @ 70% for all the testing that I have mentioned here so I can definitely hear the second card's fan slow down when it crashes. I even tried lower speeds but it seems that going over 1.25V causes it to crash and I have to reboot the computer. At this point, would it be correct for me to think that something like OCP or OVP is kicking in causing the second card to crash which causes the fan to slow down and the monitors to go blank?

Edit: forgot to mention, I have not checked to see what the stock voltage is for the second HD 7970 but I am thinking that it is a lower one. Will report later.

Thanks so much! I'll give it a shot in the morning and see what happens. I was looking around at the application in the install directory instead of the shortcut, going through the properties of the main application. This is good to know so thanks!

Bummer. I guess having a low voltage card isn't all it's cracked up to be. :( Is there any way to mod that?

I just checked out a couple of games. Had to nudge down by 25mhz for some of them. Nothing to sneeze at, considering it's still a 30% increase for basically the cost of fan noise.
 
I seem to have a decent chip, but the temps are killing it for me because it makes me raise my fan speed, and anything past 40% is pretty loud to me. I have actually kept it at a low 1125/1575 @ 1056mv and it sits at 70-75c on load. When I pump anything 1075mv or more, it would jump into the 80s which would need higher fan speed to cool it down. How are the temps for you guys?
 
Running heaven, looking at statue

volts @1218 trixx = 1.115 in gpuz 1180mhz will crash at 87 degrees (fan 57%)
volts @1193 trixx = 1.152 in gpuz 1180mhz will crash at 90 degrees (fan 54%)
volts @1170 trixx = 1.068 in gpuz 1180mhz will ---- artifact at 95 degrees (fan50%) - took longer to heat

volts @1170trixx
1240Mhz artifacts occur @71 degrees
1230Mhz artifacts occur @73 degrees
1220Mhz artifacts occur @75 degrees
1210Mhz artifacts occur @80 degrees
1180Mhz artifacts occur @95 degrees


so the main thing i notice before crash, the vddc and Vddc current change drastically
when the card starts out VDDC current would be around 140 amps
when the card heats up the Vddc keeps going up, eventually around 190, 1 recording log from gpuz even captured an odd 250 (followed by 2x 180 then crash)
The load is always the same, standing still looking at statue, seems once the temps raise the voltage control needs to be cooler, raising the voltage only hindered my OC efforts, resulting in crashes at lower temps


A) volts x amps + high temp = Vddc amps out of control = crashes
B) lower volts x amps = higher temps before vddc out of control
C) higher fanspeed = insane warhammer behind the computer
