Grand Theft Auto 5's Ray Traced Reflections Upgrade Tested on PS5 and Xbox Series X

We'd seen ray traced shadows before in the current-gen refresh of GTA 5- but very recently, Rockstar went back and improved the game still further, adding RT reflections...on top of that, very minor issues we had with the Xbox Series version of the game were also addressed (likely before the RT upgrade)...in this video, Oliver Mackenzie shows us the improvements and limitations of the new GTA 5 fidelity mode...

They're not bringing ray tracing to the PC version, unfortunately. We get screwed like we did with DMC5.

The PC version hasn't seen a tech update in forever. Probably not in the last 5 years. The game still looks phenomenal for what it is, but there's a lot of new tech (HDR, DLSS, RT, etc.) they could be taking advantage of. I have to imagine they aren't going to bother at this point, though.

I have to think that they'll eventually bring this to PC...consoles are always the priority with Rockstar but with ray-tracing tech it only really shines on PC

So after playing Red Dead 2 for a bit its got me wanting to see what all the hype was with gta5. I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me real quick though pertaining to the story mode.

I know there are three characters that are playable but how exactly does that work? I haven't been able to find any definite answers online. Like do you play one character and exhaust his portion of the story and move on to the next, or does it constantly switch between them all the time? I'm pretty sure you have to play them all.

I'm not even sure I really want to play it tbh, I mainly want to see the world that was built more than anything. I hear it still holds up pretty well even by today's standards. But I already know it's gonna be a test just to get through the dialog with all nigga this, nigga that bullshit. It's on sale for $15 at the moment, so I can't get burned to bad if I really end up not liking it.

Also I want to check out the Natural Vision mod. It def has a good look to it. Though I think in general the mod removes a little too much atmosphere ( I watched a few comparison vids). Also BOHICA with the shitty R* controls! But I'd image it should feel pretty familiar after playing Red Dead.

It's been awhile; I believe the game will jump you around, but you can also manually switch between them as well. Yes you have to play them all.

They all play a part in the story, there's no avoiding playing as them all. You will occasionally exhaust a character's missions, and you will occasionally switch between them during the same mission. It depends.

I liked all the characters.

kk, thanks again. GT, I already went ahead and bought it soon after ChoGGi replied. I most likely wouldn't have made an account there anyways just to save $5, but thanks anyway.

I have yet to play the single player campaign beyond what was required for it to let me go online lol. Should probably do that at some point.

It's good.

Only SP that's better is GTA:SA.

I've heard a lot of good about it but I went online and never looked back lol.
One of these days

I distinctly remember loading into GTAO on my PS4 and immediately hearing some kid just fuckin screeching. Full on reeeeeee.

Literally never touched it again.

Ah, I disable in game audio channels before ever playing :) Been doing that since before CS:S started tapering off.
Much better experience without any of that in any game.

IMO, the single player is what GTA is all about. That's where the humor and personality really shines.
Fair point, I liked most of the single player campaign in prior versions but each had some very agitating parts.. and with limited game time now I wanted to play with my friends.

PC Support

Support for the previous version of GTAV will continue, allowing anyone whose hardware does not currently meet the minimum requirements of the new upgrade to keep playing.

- I respect that.. (So it appears you select Legacy or Gen9 version at install)

It's showing as "now available" in Steam for me. Downloading it just to see what's up with the new stuff.
EDIT: It's apparently only a pre-load in spite of that banner. 🤷‍♂️

also seeing this, odd

I preloaded it on the Rockstar Launcher. Hopefully it'll run well enough on Linux since it complained that I don't have enough power (Windows installers are dumb with WINE on Linux at times).

I'm so hyped. I was about to redo a GTA V playthrough and the anti-aliasing options are terrible. MSAA doesn't deal with all jaggies, is very demanding, and the other options are a blurry mess.

For DLSS alone I am hyped. The RTX could be cool too if done well.

Here's the blurb that was on Steam this morning:

The upcoming upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V on PC is now available to pre-load. This new version — with highly requested features previously only available in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions including new vehicles and performance upgrades, access to subscribe to GTA+, and much more — arrives on March 4 and is available for free to all players who currently own GTAV on PC.

Anyone who already owns GTAV will see GTAV Enhanced available in their library to begin pre-loading. The existing version for PC has been renamed GTAV Legacy — which will continue to be supported.

Beginning today, you can also preemptively migrate your Story Mode progress to the new version, directly from the Pause Menu inside GTAV Legacy on PC. Please note, you can update the Story Mode Save Game uploaded to Rockstar Games multiple times — overwriting the previously uploaded Save Game each time — but you can only migrate it to GTAV Enhanced once, and while you will be able to continue playing from where you left off in GTAV Legacy, progress cannot be copied back.

On March 4, once the free upgrade is available, you'll be able to migrate your Story Mode progress and GTA Online character progress from within GTAV Enhanced. The GTA Online transfer is also a one-time migration that does not delete your GTAV Legacy progress, but it cannot be reversed, and includes any Characters, GTA$, Progression, Stats, Vehicles, Properties, Weapons, Clothing, and Player-Created Jobs.

Players on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can still only migrate Story Mode and Online progress to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation or Xbox console families and PC.

For more info on this free GTAV PC upgrade, including technical enhancement details and recommended specs, please check out our previous announcement.

I went ahead and re-downloaded the original GTA5 to do the save transfer thing. There's an option in the menu just listed as "upload" where you choose one of your saves. It then confirms that save will be available in the Enhanced version. Mine were cloud saves to begin with, so maybe one of them would have been there already? I dunno, but either way I'm good to go for next week.

I haven't re-played GTA5 in a hot minute, so this will be a fun way to revisit that world. I still think GTA4 was better as far as world building and humor, but as a game GTA4 suuuuuucked. GTA5's gameplay is actually pretty damned good, and Trevor + background characters keep things from being too bland.

Anyone know if this is coming for epic games store users? I've seen no news on that, and I got my copy free from there. I haven't played it yet, but I'd like to with the new version!

i think maybe because Epic doesn't have preload option for games? probably once its released it will appear on epic im guessing.

Looks good and runs better than the original did for the most part. It still has little hiccup stutters here and there, but they're less extreme. The game doesn't bottom out as hard in the brushy desert areas, too.
I'm weirded out that there's no HDR, though. Seems like that would have been one of the easier things to add and it's tech people got used to having like a decade ago.

Today’s the day, eh? I’m excited to see the improvements. Maybe I will finally play all the way through one day. This was the first/only mainline GTA since 3 that I never finished.

If nothing else, it seems like there's no reason to run the older version anymore. At least assuming other mods work.
This new one runs better, has more visual settings, higher refresh rates, DLSS/FSR/DLAA, reflex, etc.
It seems to also fix the issue with the original where the cutscene dialogue and subtitles were cut off depending on your monitor settings.
I played around with it for 10 minutes and it seems like what it was intended to be. The lack of HDR in 2025 is weird, but it's not really that big of a deal.
