Google Pixel 3

From what I heard, and I'm very anti-wireless charging due to its charging inefficiency, isn't this actually a positive spin for Qi charging? Like Qi stops charging at 100%, and goes to standby, and doesn't restart charging until battery life goes to 95%. And Qi charging on standby is highly efficient. Which is how it makes up the difference compared to most regular out of the box chargers with inefficient standbys. But compared to my multiport Anker chargers, Qi sucks.
 
Wait, did you say you need DisplayPort (DP), or did you just mean a DVI port?,

There is a difference between the two, so some clarity would be appreciated. The cheapest DP video card is a GT 1030.

I know I've mostly skimmed this thread, but I'm pretty sure that's a mispost :p


I did notice some improvement on the ram bit.... I didn't really have much issue except Facebook primarily getting a blue screen boot from time to time if I was 3-5 apps away when I returned to it, but that hasn't happened since. It does however do a refresh when I return to it (as if I back arrowed as soon as I got there), I'm guessing that's probably app related but who knows.
Every once in a while AliExpress would do the app reboot (splash screen etc) too and appears to still do so (and on og pixel as well so unsure if app or ram). I haven't really had enough time with random apps to see any other effects/changes.

One of the many complaints I've had with the Pie update; no ability to adjust ringtone volume without sounding off the actual ringtone of my phone. Every time I go to adjust it, someone around me asks "who's calling" or it at least draws attention to me when I'd like to just discretely adjust my ringtone volume.

If Google keeps regressing like this in future updates, it may drive me to another OEM if just so I can get some kind of customization back to the OS. I would go back to root/ROMing, but these days wiping and flashing every month or two is too much of a PITA just to keep up to date. One of the main reasons I'm on Android is for the granular UI customization/preferences and it seems Google is getting away from that with each update now; no more:

  • No more notification shade WiFi/BT device management.
  • No more discrete way to change ringtone/alarm volume.
  • No more nav bar on P3 users for people who prefer it while Google works on their half-assed implementation of gestures.
  • No more notifications across the whole notification shade even for phones with no notch (basically a simulated notch for notification icons).
  • No more vertical app switcher so you can see more apps at once and select them faster.
  • No option to change default volume button preference (some people would still prefer it to be ringtone by default)
  • "Lets make the BT device menu more convoluted by burying paired devices into another sub-menu so it's extra annoying to connect to your car or other BT device while driving or just in general.
Damn.. I didn't even mean to make a list like that but after rattling it off into the paragraph, I figured it would be easier to read in list format. I'm sure there's a few more things I forgot to mention as well since It's been a few months now since I've been on Oreo. Let me use my wife's Note 9 for a minute though and I'm sure they'll come back to me quickly, lol.

The monthly security updates have stopped my rooting and ROM'ing. Just too much of a pain and long process to do each every month. And the risk of soft bricking making the process a crazy time sink getting it back again.

Wish there was a one button solution to use while still keeping root.

I don't have any real value to add to your post but did want to say things pointlessly.... I don't (didn't?) know if there was a way to adjust ring volume without it making sound apart from when the volume button default was ring volume.... If that was what you meant, I'm totally torn on that. Initially I thought it was the stupidest thing ever, then the more I realized what a pita it was too adjust media volume all the time and that I never adjusted ring volume except 'normal' to silent the more I liked it. Now I periodically reminisce about using that to adjust it even though I don't adjust it hardly ever. I think the simple solution is just make a friggin toggle so they can control whichever you want.

The bt device list shit is totally convoluted and even confusing (or perhaps extraneous in nature) sometimes.

I prefer the new app switcher. While the older one was faster, the majority of the time of I'm looking between apps and not just switching, I need to see what was on the screen, and the old system went from barely visible to 'fuck you here's the title bar' very quickly making it useless in that capacity.

I hated when the software notch showed up. I knew this was to to force everything to fit uniformly restless of device even though I literally was unaware of notches being a thing entirely prior to pixel 3 leak (I didn't even notice/get the haircut joke on the Samsung commercial until after the pixel leak, had no idea).
It sucks ass, they have to improve that shit some way. There's simply no room half the time. I'm diligent about clearing notifications on the left anyway, but the right is always maxed out... Charge, cell signal, WiFi, and it's full. LTE and VPN permanently hidden, never mind anything else that would show up. Left side is literally half filled just showing the time for 1/4 of the hours of a day, and nearly as bad the rest of the hours.

Shit, I should have made a list too. Sorry.

FTFY. Pretty much what I've always said.

Pixel 3 is less enticing the more I think about it though, esp. as a Pixel 2 XL owner. In addition to the complaints I listed above, this December security update seems to have added more critical bugs than it fixed, because I got 2 consecutive random reboots the day after I got it and it cleared all paired BT devices I had on the phone, so I had to re-pair everything again. I know this is anecdotal and bugs are a part of any OS/platform, but Google has been adding them more than any other OEM lately from what I've seen. For a couple months, face unlocking was totally broken, then there was the noticeably slower fingerprint unlocking they added in another update earlier this year.

If Google thinks they can sell these phone at the premium they are, while skimping in hardware (< 6GB RAM, no headphone jack, no zoom lens, no 4k60 video, crappy microphones for video), they definitely need to up their software QA since they seem to think this is where they can make up for it.

Google will disappoint simply by making Verizon the exclusive retail partner. Fuck Verizon and AT&T for lying and fucking us #RIPNetNeutrality

While limiting to Verizon is dumb, isn't the only drawback being that you can't lease the phone from tmo or sprint or att? Or make payments on it however they are doing that now?
I mean you can just as easily buy it from google to use on whatever you want and not have to deal with the locked bootloader too if that is a thing for you. I just don't get the problem that Verizon only creates that is insurmountable.

Basically, and any Verizon specific incentives such as receiving $xxx bill credits with the purchase/financing of the Google Pixel 3.

I always buy factory unlocked phones as I hate any potential bloatware, locked bootloaders, or unlocking requirements.
 
Oh I didn't realize they were back on subsidies again, I thought they still quit that (or did the bs ones where you either still pay as much oop or have to trade a high dollar phone in etc).

Now that you mention it I do remember now the bf deal was b1g1 on Verizon (Fi too, but still requiring carrier usage). I just didn't think they were doing that on the reg again on flagships.
 
The issue is the Snapdragon 670 going in these.
It's going to be slower than the Pixel 2, making the day-to-day performance only a slight upgrade from an OG Pixel.

No glassback and retaining the headphone jack are nice though...but maybe Google should've thought about that before releasing the Pixel 3 line at absurd prices to begin with.

What makes you think that? Its two high speed cores are the same as the SD845, which single thread performance is usually more impactful on most real-world UI speed and applications. But I'd be surprised if there was really any perceivable difference in UI performance between this Pixel Lite and either the P2 or P3 (since there's not much difference between the P2 and P3 in the first place - F2FS vs eMMC probably makes more of a difference than anything else at this point), considering my son's old Moto Z Play with an SD 625 doesn't seem that much slower than my Pixel 2 XL with half the hardware (but again, that phone runs F2FS while my P2 is ext4).

The reviewer is...ratchet to put it kindly. But it's the direct comparison I was looking for so, hard to complain.

I'm sure it's a combo of both the 4GB RAM *and* eMMC that is creating such a big time difference between the SD710 and SD845 in the comparison.
The video export portion alone accounts for 25s, and as I'm not too familiar with this guy's YT channel or if the testing methodology is the most realistic.

But it's a metric nonetheless. As others have said, the price can't be anywhere close to $500, otherwise there's no reason not to simply get a regular Pixel 3 on Swappa instead.

Meanwhile, has anyone gotten the new ringtone browser unlocked? I have seen a few people say they did and show pictures, but then link to an apk to sideload it which makes no sense and is sketchy as shit.
 
Had my Pixel 3 for a bit now. I like one handed, pocketable phones. So, for flagships readily available in the states, my options pretty much seemed to be Pixel 3, iPhone XS, and S9. Just about everything else is too big. I tend to prefer Android and don't upgrade phones super often, so the software support on the Pixel 3 seemed like my best bet.

I purchased it during the $150 off on Black Friday and, frankly, I wouldn't recommend anybody buy it without getting a similar deal. It's a nice phone, but it's not a $900 (128GB) phone. At $750 it felt more fair, but honestly, I think it fits better priced a bit lower.

I will warn anybody looking to get one right now that Google is having some MAJOR logistical issues getting these phones out. It's hard to say if it's related to specific distrubution warehouses or not, but there are a lot of horror stories going on that somehow hasn't really been reported much. I had some first hand experience with this.

My phone originally had an arrival date of 11/27 on the tracking (and Google's order sheet estimated between 11/26 and 11/28). The arrival date came and went and there was zero updates in my tracking. Eventually the status changed to "pending". I filed an email ticket and received a response about a day later saying it was being forwarded to "a concerned shipping specialist". I never received a response, but eventually my packaged started moving 11/30 with a new date of 12/3. It was at my local distribution center at 3am on 12/3, but it never went out on the truck and the shipment got sent to "Pending" again. The package required a direct signature, so I figured I'd take 12/4 off on work to receive it. After all, there was no reason it wouldn't go out on that truck, right? Well, the tracking never updated the next day, calling FedEx didn't help, Google didn't respond at all and nobody seemed to know where it was. I gave up and left for work halfway through the day because clearly it wasn't coming. Much to my surprise, I received a notice at 4pm it had been delivered and apparently signed for, by me, somehow. When I got home, sure enough, there it was on my porch.

I was pretty irritated at that point, mostly because I was getting no response from Google about anything I was having trouble with. I get that FedEx sucks and a lot of these problems might just be with them, but getting NO RESPONSES at all just felt unacceptable. But whatever, I unboxed it, I immediately liked the phone and was about to let it all pass...until I noticed the screen was defective. There's just this perma-green thing in the bottom right corner. Visible on all screens, resetting didn't help, etc. Are you effin kidding me?

At this point I gave up on their non-existent email support and used their phone support. I'd highly recommend anybody else go this route if trying to get help. At least somebody will respond, unlike with email. The person was helpful, setup RMAs, and I was just going to get a refund. I was pretty done with the whole experience. I was about to grab an XS instead, almost out of spite, but after figuring out it was gonna cost me almost $600 bucks more apples to apples, I decided to give Google another shot and swapped my return to a replacement.

Fortunately for me, the replacement, THUS FAR, has gone well. Received it in 3 business days. No defects, appeared to be brand new, full retail box with accessories. So long as they clear my return without issue, life will be good. But be warned, I'm one of many who have had the packages randomly getting stuck or never even leaving the warehouse. Some people STILL haven't gotten their black friday orders. It appears to mostly effect the 64GB models, potentially pointing to stock issues at certain distribution centers. I got a 128GB white version, so I probably lucked out in that regard.

Google's quality control of their phones is still sub-par. The number of defective Pixel 3's I constantly see posted on Reddit and other tech forums is disappointing. If you're spending this kind of money you shouldn't have to worry about potentially getting a defective device. Luckily it sounds like their RMA process is fairly simple and straight forward.

I don't see Apple or Samsung having these levels of quality control issues and if Google wants to compete with them, especially with the same pricing, then they need to step it up a bit.

Yes and no. This is a 2019 phone now, releasing it with 4GB of RAM at a ~$500 price point could really turn off a lot of individuals since most phones in this price range still have 6-8GB of RAM.

But the source also is WCCFTech so take it with a grain of salt.

Anyone having lag and stutters and hiccups with the stock Google Messages text app ? My Pixel 3 XL has been smooth as butter all the time I have owned it, but just recently, last several days, the Messages app has sever stutter and pauses while sending a text or pressing back button to go to the text thread.

Might have to uninstall and go to Textra.

No lagging on my 2 XL that I've noticed. My friends and I spam each other with 9+ MMS pics/vids at a time in group chat nearly every day too.

I've heard of Textra, but never needed much from my texting app, so never felt compelled to try anything else. If Messages starts messing up on me though, I'll def try it out.

The Google Pixel 3a is here...and it looks really good!

The regular 3a starts at $399 and the 3a XL starts at $479. Same camera as the regular Pixel 3 with a Snapdragon 670 and 4GB of RAM. The screens are still 18/18.5:9 OLED but 1080p, and the battery sizes are also very nice! Body is made of plastic instead of glass which has its own pros and cons.
