Google is running “explanation” ads again because an offensive image pops up when you search the first lady’s name. Oddly enough, if you have Google’s SafeSearch turned off, you don’t get the image.

Sometimes Google search results from the Internet can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries. We assure you that the views expressed by such sites are not in any way endorsed by Google.

And yet they continue to leave that website up in the search. I don't think google actually cares.

Since the website serving the image isn't violating the TOS, they can't do anything. The original website was hosting Malware, so THAT site got removed. Reading FTW...

Ok...search George Bush and tell me how that's any more offensive than any of those. Hell search Laura Bush, but only do it if kids aren't in the room....

It's the internet folks. Get used to it.

Zoh noes, someone makes a joke, news at 11! At least we have the freedom to do so... whether you find it funny or offensive, it's their right to share their views (misguided or not).

The people who laugh at/don't find that image offensive are pathetic.

Look, I can understand people taking an "OMG RACISM" view, but I'd laugh at a picture of George Bush as a saltine cracker too... there's a reason humor is subjective and not a science. It's clearly not meant as a supremacist riot-inducing picture, and it is clearly a joke.

Oh, and frankly, I'd rather be offended a few times in my life than live under an oppressive thought-police state.

To find offense at the simple work of another? Strange concept. Perhaps if the person held a special place in your life/heart. If the image isn't constructive, ignore it. However, I know I'm in the minority.

Ditto.

Should monkey chanting at football (the real one, not that American thing!) games with black players be shrugged at too?

Yep. If no one paid any attention, I imagine a lot of it would go away.

Like this piece of history?

They don't manipulate search results. That's precisely what you want from a search engine. If you want some sort of hand-holding search experience, go use Bing (or whatever).

I'm not black. I don't find it offensive. I can't be bothered to feel offended for other people because of a simple picture.

Pathetic, in my mind, would be finding that image in any way offensive. Unless, of course, you're Michelle Obama.

Offensive? Sure, to some. Personally, I take no offense, but I do think it shows the abject idiocy of anyone who would create such an image. It says far more about it's creator than it does about Michelle Obama.

Maybe some day this nation will have moved forward enough to realize that comparing black people to various non-human primates is juvenile, racist, and idiotic. I'm not holding my breath though.

This nation? Way to generalize. We will never get to the point of zero racists buddy, hate to break the news. I don't personally know a single person that is racist. The only place I ever see racism is on the internet.

Really? You don't know ONE person that is racist? I know a ton, and I live in CA and went to a liberal college.

The image is offensive, period. Should it be up there on google? Yep, freedom of speech. It's still not even remotely humorous though. Vulgar jabs at famous people based on race, sex, or orientation usually aren't.

What is pathetic is knee jerk political correctness.

Myself, I don't find the image amusing. I won't be downloading it. But I also did just shrug when I saw it, I didn't see it as any worse then hundreds of other photoshopped or altered images of hundreds of other politicians and celebrities.

I'll ask you this, I once said before Obama was elected that he looked like a black Alfred E. Newman (The mascot for lack of a better term of Mad Magazine). Am I ALLOWED to make such an observation? Or will you just jump in with knee jerk pre-programmed political correctness again and call me "pathetic" for daring to make such a comment? If so, then yes I will find you pathetic for giving such a pre-programmed politically correct response. My intent isn't to be racist if I say that, it's to make what I find to be a funny observation.

As an aside, no I didn't support Obama. But I didn't exactly support McCain either. I am VERY non-partisan with regards to US Politics.

Oh well, feel free to call me "pathetic". You'll only prove my point with another knee jerk politically correct post.

Anyone who thinks they don't know a single person that's racist is either blind or just doesn't recognize it when they see it.

Your placing "period" at the end of a sentence doesn't automagically result in a statement of opinion becoming an indisputable, undebatable statement of fact, but nice try :)

Remember folks, it's only not offensive if it's an older white man, like Bush, who is pictured as a monkey.

Personally, as a white caucasian I'd love to see people making more fun out of how white people look if it meant we could get over this "I'm offended" shock syndrome.

It's an expression. An opinion isn't a fact, period.

SEE WHAT I DID THAR?

Everyone is a racist/prejudice in one way or another, EXCEPT ME. I'm an equal opportunity hater. I hate everyone the same, even my own "kind". :p

Note: The above statement is to be taken as a joke, don't be offended.

If you're a black person in this country like myself and understand the history of blacks being considered an inferior race and the comparisons of blacks to apes, then yeah, sorry this isn't anything but a racist image.

That said I'm not particularly offended and with some context this might even be funny but the image in and of itself is racist, pure and simple.
