I read the sticky above, but I didn't notice any mention of a good modular PSU. Are there any? I've got a Vantec Stealth-520A that's just too big for my clear mid-tower case. Added to that, the things got enough connectors to supply power to another computer!

I'm thinking about selling my PSU, but I want to buy something that's modular, and will give me the flexibility I need. Anyone have recommendations? It needs to have SATA, but I'm not really concernd if it has LED fans (or any other gimmicky add-ons).

My other option is to bust out with a sleeving kit, and cut back some of the extra/unused wiring/connectors. I'd hate to do that to a good PSU, but it's causing an issue that I need to address. ( I have to leave the case side open, and let the unused connections dangle out.

Abit IC7-G
P4 478 3.0c (30 capper with Hyper 6 heatsink)
1GB Mushkin Level II 2-2-2 PC3500 (4x256) in dual channel mode
PNY 6800 ( fully unlocked to 16x1,6vp )
2 60GB Maxtor SATA HDD in a Raid 0 config
1 NEC DVD-R/RW
1 NEC CD-R/RW DVD
 
No experience with them, but i heard that the antec neopowers are good. (not sure which wattages). While some may not agree, i would recommend an ultra x connect 500 w. My friend has one and its never given him a problem. On top of everyting, it looks great, especially once you throw a uv light in your case.
 
I would not recommend an Ultra. No offense to dude with some crappy 450w ;)

The good modulars are teh Antec Neopower, OCZ Modstreams and possibly the SuperFlower Plug-N.

Yeah I thought about the Ultra's, but I keep seeing a lot of people saying they are P.o.S's. I saw a NeoPower the other day at Fry's and thought about picking it up. Never heard of the OCZ or SuperFlower. I check those out.

What's wrong with the Ultra's? I've had a 500w for months now with no issues and rails have been rock stable under all conditions and there have been no negative reviews AFAIK.
 
Devil Advocate hat: There are two bad Ultra reviews. Maximum PC did a power supply shootout and Trusted Reviews power supply shootout and in both, high-profile reviews, the Ultra failed catrastrophically.

That, and Powmax is one of Ultra's resellers; so a lot of people have this misconception that Ultra power supplies are made by Leadman, thus adding insult to injury. ;)

All that said, the Ultra passed all of my load tests (twice, even,) the two different resellers that I have worked for over the last three years has sold the product line and have had no real issues with them and I personally have two of them. One as old as a year and a half, and I've had no problems.

So... I could say I suggest the Ultra, but given the climate of this audience; I'm going to suggest the Modstream because I do not recall many reports of failures, nor have I had one fail myself. :D
 
well, yesterday my "some crappy 450 w" just stopped working. Out of nowhere. So, today i went and got a neopower 480. Get this, and not the ultra. Sure, the ultra looks cool and all, but this is great. And i only had it for one day. Just get a neopower and be happy.

Right.. But Powmax ISN'T made by Youngyear. That's the point. ;)

Powmax is just a reseller. Powmax branded power supplies are made by Leadman. So to misconceive that they were made by Powmax would be the misconception that they were made by Leadman.

I don't remember seeing anyone (here anyway) say they were made by Leadman....they may have. Everyone I remember said they were made by Powmax.....which is incorrect also technically I guess. Then again with PSU's it is such a PITA to try and seperate rebrands, from non since very few people actually do make their own PSU's. IE people quite often say an Antec PSU when really it should be a ChannelWell if we really want to be super PITA's about it.

That also means his CPU was only loading the 5V. :( Which would explain why the 12V rail didn't fluctuate much. Oh well.. Maybe I can convince someone to send me a review sample. :D

I saw those too (the four that were in English and not a dead link, that is.).

I think I'll wait until someone loads one up with some equipment. I think I know somone that knows someone at FrozanCPU, so I'm going to see about working out some sort of a deal. ;)

AFAIK FrozenCPU is not an "official" Hiper dealer ar this time.
 
Oh.. Well, now I'm confused. I see the status for the item is "Not In Stock." Did they never have them in stock? I guess they're just waiting to import them in or something?

Oklohaoma wolf had at one point nailed some of their supplies as being
Fore Point Industrial but he didn't know about this one.
 
Yeah.. I've never heard of Fore Play Industrial either. I'll have to research this beast.
 
The Fore Point UL file number used to be all over units from both Hiper and Superflower/TTGI - I'm just not sure yet if either have changed OEM's or begun making them for themselves. I've also had a suspicion for a while that Enermax fits in there too somewhere in the past.

Edit - I think you nailed 'em Spectre - that's gotta be Fore Point ;)

The one I listed doesn't fit a SuperFlower (I believe) but if you follow the link I posted there appears to be a picture of a SuperFlower there under the Plug-N's. So they may still be.


Edit: though these have to be some of the crappiest pics i have seen in awhile.

mine has started to fail after roughly 5 months of use. my aspire psu on the otherhand, has gone for a couple years w/o problem.
we'll see how TTGI is with their warranty service now :)

I had a 20GB WD HDD that "started to fail" allowing me to backup everything before it failed completely,
but I've never had a PSU "start to fail", what is it doing wrong?

Yeah. I was generalizing. Let's just say "things with moving parts" can start to fail, but that's about it. :)

Some might say leaking caps are a "starting to fail" situation, but if the cap's already leaking... I think it's already failed. ;)

well actually this forum fed the Powmax\Leadman flames quite heavilly, in fact its just possible we where the driving force behind the misconception as the Powmax listing was spotted here almost immediately and jumped all over and widely distributed, and further that stance was rigorously defended until proof otherwise was forthcoming

however once provided with enough clues by Ultra I personally uncovered the Youngyear attribution from a lead in one of their manuals which I was able to match up to the UL database and publicly ate my own words :p

luckily for me most of the truely nasty invective on my part is hard to find as its attributed to my even twin Ice Czar Guest :p
so much for my confession, ither guilty parties will have to come forward themselves

Right my point from the Previous post of mine (above the one quoted) were people were running around saying Powmax was making them not at least attributing them to the parent company (leadman) that does the actual dirty deed for Powmax.

I have had my superflower Plug-N for 8 months now no problems. Silent (14cm led fan), 550w (there is also a 450w version), and overall performs great. Just look at the stuff im powering with this thing.
