Yeah thankfully nvidia are nowhere near as bad for that as they used to be. They still cheat 3dmark (but who cares) and video transcoding but that's about it.
 
It seems to me that the ATI/AMD drivers have actually been improving recently while Nvidia software is on a decline, you might want to re-evaluate your decision.
 
its more about the game of economics for me when i get graphics card so drivers or not i've had my fair share of problems from both. Whichever is cheaper and better in that generation has my money.
 
yea the +12v rail is consistantly reading 12.830.
i thought i would keep the 6950 forever and use it in my living room htpc, but the constant crashes and not being able to load did it for me.

i never had that problem with the 580, till i would get the blue lines. now im afraid it'll start doing this with my other 580. so time to rma this antec tpq. which i've read is known for failures.

I would buy a new one at first chance. My PSU took the GPU with it when it died... I got myself a Corsair TX 750 and then a Seasonic X - 750 because I hate noise and the TX 750 was too noisy for my silenced setup (I transferred the TX 750 into another system. Its a good PSU otherwise).

Moral of the story is: Its more expensive to cheap out on the PSU, so get a good one when you do now (I rma's the psu, but not the GPU since it was the PSU's fault and two different shops). :D
 
Drivers worse since AMD took over? What? They've done nothing but improve. Engineering is better, drivers are better. They get released more often and hotfixes come quickly.

When BC2 came out, I enjoyed a good two weeks of getting into maps 35 seconds faster than Nvidia users. Or when Nvidia paid a good chunk of money to cripple the shit out of AMD cards in Hawks 2 with tessellation <1 pixel, AMD had tessellation adjustments in the driver quickly. AMD cleans up messes they didn't even make.
 
Yeah, Corsair units are loud lately, shame, the HX520/620/VX450 were quiet. Seasonic X-series PSUs are excellent for noise though, no doubt.

Thats true :) Love the x series, since they are semi-passive. The San Ace fan is really quiet too. Best PSU I've had so far. Worth every penny.
 
I've been surprised by my PSUs actually. I bought a Zalman 850W for quadCF use expecting it to be loud, and it really isn't, in an open-box scenario (which my case effectively is), it runs at 16dB all the way up to 700W, which is far in excess of almost any other PSU on the market. The two smaller Nexus units I got for the anciliary PC and fileserver are also superb, since those PCs never draw more than 150W, they're always at idle, 11dB at 380rpm :) Neither of these are well-revered brands, but they perform admirably.
 
zalman and nexus are among those that has taken noise into consideration. :) By fans, you can't go wrong with Nexus.

My single burner George Forman grill gets around 30-40fps at 2560x1440, at least for BF3 beta. I think it's max settings, though TBH, I didn't check :eek: (normally do so when I first start up the game... except it's a webpage, now :mad:).
 
i had the atikmpag.sys problem constantly. had his 6950 crossfire, sold them and tried msi twin frozr 3 6950 same issue. tried formatting, bios updates, multiple drivers psu tested stock everything still atikmpag.sys


returned my msi 6950 to newegg and bought two gtx 570 2.5gb cards - no blue screens no issues rock solid / good riddance amd

Agreed, their drivers were much worse before than now. I don't think their drivers were ever as good as they are now and have been since the Cayman GPU's cmae out. Even before Cayman the drivers for the 5800 sereis were better than the horrid drivers from yesteryear.

Exactly!! most people draw conclusions based on what they read on forums as to the reliability of a driver or hardware manufacturers reliability. This is the wrong thing to do because people post usually when they are having problems. The million happy users without issue don't start a thread called, "My 6970 is working great" So OP if you found issues saying atikmpag.sys and that lead you to believe it's a widespread issue, google nv4_disp.dll and tell me if you get similar results. These are the names of the drivers so when you get a crash you'll see that. Naturally this is what is mentioned in over 90% of reported issues.

My powersupply at the time couldn't handle SLI GTX's... Plus I got a chance to sell one of my GTX's for $250 (when i bought it for $150 a year prior when retail was still $400 :D ). I gave the other one to my brother.
 
The only issue I have with ATI drivers are with RAGE, can't even play the game with the stuttering, lagging and freezing every few seconds.

Have you tried the driver that actually supports the game?
 
Complain all you want about AMD drivers, but when Windows crash statistics got leaked it proved that Nvidia drivers were the least reliable.
 
the problem with RAGE is RAGE, not AMD.

Rage is a pile, saddens me to see ID create such utter crap. (the game is awesome, the engine/port is crap)
 
While I agree AMD drivers have improved ymmv on issues or lack thereof with any product. I've dealt with the atikmpag.sys bsod and never found a solution that let me keep my video cards. The particular issue I had was a result of using recent drivers, crossfire, eyefinity, and MSI afterburner.

AMD makes a good product for the money but I am not willing to troubleshoot a bsod issue because of incompatibilities with their drivers and certain hardware monitoring applications.

This is an AMD subcategory so yes AMD fans will call you out OP. The bottom line is whether it is your fault or not you are not happy. Hopefully you will be pleased with nvidia and your issues will cease.

^^ IMO, since the "search new posts," feature, I don't think "AMD section" or 'nVidia section," really means as much anymore. Just IMO.

You don't need to be an AMD fan to call him out, just a fan of common sense.
 
i went back and forth between flagship gpus since the ati 9800series and i did encounter more problems with ati drivers but they were never super bad. the worst one i recall is my screen blinking for funzies and my fan not autoadjusting speed.
 
I haven't been a PC guy for long, but I've used both Nvidia and Radeon cards over the last 4 years and have not seen a huge difference.

Nvidia drivers are by and large better, but not by a huge margin anymore. And on the flip side, Radeon usually still offers better performance per dollar (and cooler running cards at least for this generation).
 
Sweet, another case of someone blaming the graphics card and drivers before checking out the rest of his poorly built computer.

And those statistics were from Vista.

Not that it matters to the Nvidia fans, AMD ATI were behind cancer, HIV and the bank crisis, and since the drivers were bad ten years ago that means they're bad even today..
 
It's probably already been said but the only time I get the atikmpag is when I have an unstable oc on my cards.

I know some people who swear by nvidia and others amd/ati. All I care about is who's going to give me the bext bang for the buck. and in the case of fermi isn't 6 months late to the performance party.

Your observations, hypothesis, and conclusion were immensely helpful. However a user experience within the same situation should be deemed more relevant.

HIS 6950 in crossfire, VGA to MiniDP, Eyefinity, MSI Afterburner = BSOD

Attempted:
Fresh Win7 Install
'Older, Proven' Drivers
Updated Motherboard BIOS
Updated VGA card BIOS
Tested individual RAM sticks
Rails showing correct voltages with multimeter
Stock CPU and VGA settings as pertaining to overclocking
Disabled MSI Afterburner ability to access VGA low-level functions for monitoring
2 NEW MSI Twin Frozr 3 6950s

Purchased two GTX 570s and haven't had any issues.
My complaint with NVIDIA is the cost for performance. AMD wins hands down.
 
Nvidia and Ati both have their fare share of driver problems. It just depends on the combination of parts in your rig that triggers certain things to happen. Just bad luck lol

I've used both over the past decade and they both have issues. Something ATI does well nvidia is garbage at and vice versa.
