Hey all,

Going a new build once intel's sandy bridge gets released.

I'm going with 3x Dell U2311H monitors, with 1920x1080 res each.

What's the best config for my money that I should go with this multi-monitor setup?

Seems that people like Eyefinity over nvidia's 3D Surround.

Will one 6950 cut it? or should I be looking at 2x 6950's?

Or still consider nvidia's GTX 5xx offerings?

Well... there are pros and cons to either the green team or the uh... green team.

NVIDIA requires two cards in SLI, ATI can do it all on one card.

What's you budget?

Hoping to stay 400-600 max.

I know that's quite a wide range, but I'm looking for spending the best bang for the buck with that setup.
 
$430: 470 SLI.

$600: 6950 CrossFire.

Above $600 you hit diminishing returns. I wouldn't get 570 SLI. The 1.28GB will become a liability at times, and it costs $100 more, so its a no-brainer.
 
So, given that I'll be gaming at that resolution, it's almost a guarantee that I will want to go multi-GPU, correct?

A single 6950 or 6970 won't be able to cut it?
 
It would be able to cut it, but going purely by numbers, your resolution is 50% more pixels than 2560 x 1600. You would likely have to sacrifice on settings. You could certainly buy one, then buy another when you are prepared.

Depends on the game, there are a number that will work well at that resolution with only one care but at that resolution the more cards the better generally. If you're not looking into 3D, the 6950s are something I would consider.

Since you using monitorsthat do not do 120Hz AMD will be the cheapest effective route. I use a pair of 460's at the moment for 5760x1080 and they work really well.
 
I'm waiting on a displayport adapter to arrive in the next few days for a 5760x1080 setup. I've got a single 6950 at the moment (budget and PSU wont support a second 6950).

I primarily play WoW, FSX, and BFBC2. I'll let you know how things run.

If you don't mind not being able to max out AA and the likes then a single card will work. Gameplay is smoother and looks better with two though. I went from a single 5870 running my eyefinity setup to the two 6950s and I definitely appreciate the improvement.

Crossfire has always needed an adapter, but all cards come with crossfire bridges so it's not an issue.
 
I run a single 6970 powering 3 24" panels. Runs BF:BC2 just fine with all settings on high, HBAO on. Only 1x AA, and 4x aniso though...but I can't tell a difference between 1 and 2, so I just leave it at 1. I don't think I have enough horsepower to run anything over 2x aa though...that said, at 6048x1080, its not necessary :).
I am on an older 775 quad rig, with a q9550 at 3.5Ghz. I am water cooled, and run the chip at 4Ghz, but when I swapped cards I backed it down to check stability and still haven't bumped it back up. My BF:BC2 performance might go up when I crank the chip again.

But eyefinity gaming is certainly possible with 1 card. Just depends on the game and settings. 2 is always better though :)
 
Me personally, I would go 6950CF if money was a concern.

You will want to go dual GPU, and I don't think 1280MB of RAM will be adequate at that resolution if you plan on using this setup without upgrades for 2 years or so. That rules out 470/570s.
 
You dont need an adapter if you have U2311H, they all ready have a displayport. Only thing you will need is a mini display port to normal connector in back of the U2311H. I believe the 6950 have a mini connector on the back. Correct me if I am wrong.

considering the heat and volume I'd hold off on recommending the GTX470/80.

why is the 1.28GB a liability?
 
570 SLI is serious firepower. I believe at his resolution 1.28GB would become a limiting factor in memory intensive games. Couple that with the fact that it costs more than a 6950 setup, and I wouldn't recommend it to OP.

On the other hand, if OP was alright with the power and heat, or alternatively got 470s with the Twin Frozr II or something similar, it would be great bang for the buck. An overclocked 470 approaches a 570's performance, for much less price.

I believe there are two main choices: 470 SLI with custom cooling, or 6950 CrossFire.

I was hitting the 1GB frame buffer at 5760x1200 with my 5870CF setup in some games where I could use AA. If I was buying a setup I intended to use for a couple of years, I would be afraid that 1.2GB would not be enough.
 
Don't care much for frame rate. Running Metro 2033 @ Very High with AAA and x4AF, Mount and Blade, Half Life/OJ Box stuff/ Star Wars TFU 2, Just Cause 2, Dirt 2. They all run smoothly and look as nice as I'd expect them to!
 
The only issue I have had with my Bizlink Active DVI to DisplayPort adapter is that whatever monitor it's connected too will suffer a display link failure and couldn't match the refresh rate or something. I am forced to use the ATI 10.2 CCC Drivers as they are the only ones that do not cause my DP monitor to flicker/go to standby on its own. I must unplug the USB power, or DP connector, or disable/re-enable my display group in Eyefinity to turn the other monitor back on with ANY other driver version. Some more frequent/worse then the rest.

It still does it when the monitor goes to sleep with the 10.2, I wake up every morning and unplug the mother fucker.

I'm hoping to just buy native DP monitors soon.

There is no way you are running Metro2033 at Very High at 5760x1080 on a single 5870 1GB. That would be a slide show. I'm sorry but that's simply not possible.

Like I said, there is no way you are getting acceptable performance from a single 5870 in Metro at 5760x1080 at Very High with AA.

I have GTX580 SLI and in Metro2033 at 6080x1200 Very High it's not really playable.

Edit: Let me correct myself. Perhaps you are playing it at those specifications. But if that is true, your definition of "playable" is probably not what the majority of this forum would accept as playable.

Looks like a 2x 6950 is in the future for me. :D

Haven't tried multi-gpu since the 9800GX2 and that wasn't all that great. Glad to see CrossfireX scaling is way better than before.

Also I'm shocked no one mentioned that the 6950s will mostlikely unlock to 6970 and give you unreal value for 600$
