Hey guys, lately I've been seeing a lot of cool free games available for download. I was hoping we could make a thread with all the free games and possibly if enough people contribute make it a sticky. I'll periodically upadate this first post with all of the games posted in the tread. Sound like a good idea? I'll start it off with a few:

Imperishable Night - Another free japanese shooter from the same place as Cherry Blossom

Endless Fire - A vertically scrolling shmup with a twist: there are no levels and the enemies spawn randomly. When you die, the program takes note of what attack killed you, and starts to use that attack more frequently. It's opengl, so turn your settings all the way down for some crazy speed.
http://www.codespace.co.uk/

Mono - An asteroids-esque game where instead of asteroids you're shooting giant blobs of color (red, green and blue). When a blob bursts it colors the background. The goal is to turn the background completely white by layering the colors.

Simulators

Freespace 2 - One of the best space sims ever, with a solid single-player campaign and a huge amount of fan-created content. Due to a rather odd licensing agreement and a defunct publisher, it's also freely available
http://scp.indiegames.us/e107_plugins/custompages/scpinstallation.php

FlightGear - Free open source, multi-platform flight simulator. I wouldn't go replacing MS FS 2004 with it, but it's great for the price
http://www.flightgear.org/

Turn Based Strategy

MegaMek - It's a remake of the old battletech boardgame. It's definately more fun with multiple people on a LAN. It's the perfect workplace game.

------------------------------------------------------------
Best RPG I have ever played, and it is free.
It may not have Diablo or WOW graphics, but the depth and replayability pwns both any day.

Caution: L33T RPG fans only.... not for beginner RPGers

HALO ZERO

Download

And

1up's 101 awesome free games list

N, an awesome freeware platformer.

Be sure to watch some of the online high-score replays (accessible from within the game) ;).

Updated again, and all these games I've played and reccomend them, or somebody else has so that's why they are up there :)

http://www16.big.or.jp/~zun/html/game.html
I reccomend Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable night. Don't bother translating the page it usually will display wrong and hard to scroll around looking for download links. Here's the direct links incase you don't want to search:

Cherry Blossom:
http://www16.big.or.jp/~zun/data/soft/youmu_tr011.lzh

Imperishable Night:
http://mirror0.fuzzy2.com/zun/eiya_tr003.lzh (I think, been a while since I DL'd this one)

most archive programs can open these files.

Very nice

Silkroad is cool too but too much overcrowding. They need new servers or ones with A TON more capacity. Annoying at times.

The game is beautiful. Its in beta so there will be new servers as time comes.

Endless Fire:

Mono:

An asteroids-esque game where instead of asteroids you're shooting giant blobs of color (red, green and blue). When a blob bursts it colors the background. The goal is to turn the background completely white by layering the colors. This game is really challenging, I have yet to beat it even on easy.

Freespace 2
One of the best space sims ever, with a solid single-player campaign and a huge amount of fan-created content.
Due to a rather odd licensing agreement and a defunct publisher, it's also freely available, e.g. here.

I updated it with all games listed up to this point, except freeciv cuz i couldn't get onto the site, does it work for anybody else?

Blitz 1941.

runs on anything. really. onboard will do. im on a 6600 and plan on upgrading yet this is still one of my staple games

its a tank MMO(RPG?). nice semi-skill needed aiming system. you get experiance per kill, causing you to level. with each new level new tanks and parts are unlocked. sorta Warcraft 3 gfx with almost a flash animation 3d rendered building style. high speed internet not really required. it takes a chunk, but not all of your bandwith.

also companys/guilds are there. so some stratigy involved when you get to the higher levels. VERY few people playing. id say mabey 600. hoping this will boost it a little.

baised in korea? anywho they pull an engRish on you once in a while.

the game IS better then the screen shots lead you to believe.

try it out!

It appears to be dead, though you can get the source files from other sources. For a limited time only, hosted on my school computer:
Sources
FreeBSD package
Windows build

The windows build is compiled with MinGW and should theoretically not require anything else.
(As a side effect I now know how MinGW works. Interesting.)

AWESOME THREAD!

To the Poster that put the link of to dosgames.com, THANK YOU, I found a ton of shareware from my olden days and I plan to build a 486 to start playing again..
