I asked a question in the memory section and the convo got too much onto OC'n so I'm moving it here...

I'm at 3512.50 mhz with 879.92 fsb, 219.98 cpu utilization

Temps are at 57c, volts at 1.49

seems stable so far. I'm running prime 95 to work it up...

My question is this the CPU utilization for the Dual CPU is

CPU hovering at liek 22%
HT locked at 51%

Is this normal? Rig info in sig.

David

P.S. why is my processor showing up at as an Intel P4EE Gallatin now? Ugh last night it said northwood! Very curious

is the temp adjusted ? p4c800 boards tend to understate the temps so you need to adjust it by about 10deg, if the temp is not adjusted you need a new hsf

by the way you need to run dual prime to test a cpu with HT, follow this guide http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=418387

No its not adjusted, but I've compared temps to bios before and they are pretty dead on. I know I need a new HSF, I have the Zalman 9500 coming this week. :)

I'm just playing right now at minimal levels, not trying to max it yet.

much much much much much much better both cpu's at near 100% wish I would have seen that before!

1minute and locked when 100% on both cpu's!

Should I disable all services and things like Virus protection and zone alarm etc

bios will report it wrong as well, its the sensor on the board thats understating the temps
here is how you check: drop the oc, reduce the vcore to stock and let it idle in win, you'll see a temp thats lower than the case temp and same or slightly higher than the room temp and thats not possible

drop the oc and wait for the new hsf, like I was saying your temps are way too high and that was at half load, I can only imagine what they are at full

D

btw if your running value ram, did you set it to a lower mhz via divider and tested it with memtest ?

Case temp 34c, room not sure, but 75degrees, I like it warm, and processor showing 39C

75F is about 24C
is that idle ? you need to let it idle (no cpu use) for 10-20mins to see the real idle

D

PS what bios version ?

ZL1 said:

I have it set to 133mhz so it is out of the picture. I have not run memtest, do i need to do this first?

I read the OC thread it just seemed to say if you want to test the memory do this.. etc.. I'm not going for overall OC right now, I'm just seeing what the system can get pushed to with the junk ram and isolating the MOBOs max speed, at least I thought that is how I interpreted the guide.

I flashed the bios today version 1024-001

its the beta on asus's sight for the p4c800e Deluxe.

I have run the cpu at idle and it always shows between 38-44c at idle

50-55c at full load at 3.2ghz IE no OC

Well i'm at 100% load after closing all other apps down this time and it is stable at 55c

If it gets any hotter then 55 to 57 I'll shut her down. What is weird this time both processors at 100% so I guess the other services and apps were causing less then full utilization.

David

3 minutes in and lock... yikers.. well nothing broke or mad at me.. so I'm thinking additional case fans would help too, but i'm not really driving the memory at this point. Going to try 205 fsb and edge up manually.

hmmm maybe they fixed it, however 1016 is the best bios to use when ocing a northwood

how are you running prime ? you need to run small ffts, if you run blend in two instances they will fight for ram and wont get the cpu to 100%

not good, reduce the OC and try again

D

P.S. your first post says vcore 1.49v, how are you getting this number ? thats below northwoods spec

Holy crap on the limitations of the Stock HSF!!! I oc'd 205 and ran it for about 5 minutes stable and saw 59c, so I shut it down, not worth it to fry the cpu until i have proper cooling.

Thanks for your advice and help all!

David

Going to see how hot she goes at 3.2ghz what she is rated at and turning the memory back to normal. Wonder if the temps will be that high again!

well if its accurate its not terrible, but its not that great either so Id say wait for the new hsf and then give it another shot or you can try to reseat the hsf, maybe its not sitting well

you're welcome :)

Ok holy @#%@ the stock hsf sucks... running stock with both prime's running hit 62c, instantly shut it down... whew... that scared me

do you have any thermal paste ? you could try replacing the thermal pad the stock hsf uses

Nope I don't :( so I quit my playing tonight... I've got Artic 5 Silver and the Zalman 9500 and another antec 79cfm 29.8 dba.(On order from NewEgg) Which i am going to help cool the MB... so interesting stuff.

I'm very shocked that the stock fan can't handle full load, very shocked.

I've never ever had problems before, i can only assume I've never really pushed both processors to the max. Interesting how much you learn. Well if the Zalman doesn't help I'm going either water or freezer tech on it.

well thats a plan :)

but I still think the hsf isnt sitting right, I used to run my 2.4 at 3.2 with the stock hsf and it was fine (and the older ones are alu, yours should be alu/cu)
unless your cpu is a prescott, what does cpuz say ?

Well I did cut back. Also CPU-z is showing my processor today as a Gallatin which i know is wrong! It showed it yesterday as that too, but i'm positive the first time I ran CPU-z it did show it as a Northwood. Now I'm just really confused!!!!

CPUZ says Gallatin, but I know I'm positive that is not right, the processor is a 3.2ghz Extreme Edition HT with 1mb cache... It did show it as 1mb cach when i ran it the first time today it is showing up as Gallatin, I don't get why it is different. Keep in mind it showed it yesterday late last night as Gallatin too, I have a screen capture (which i am glad I took) so not happy about that!

CPUZ 1.31, I'll hunt down everest.

Thanks,

odd, 1.31 should give you the right info

everest can be found at lavalys.com

Lavasys stopped making the everest free version :(

Ran everest all is good! whew...

Intel Pentium 4EE, 3200 Mhz (16x200)
Northwood Extreme Edition
M0
L1 12k
L2 512kb
L3 2mb

More L3 then I thought, but I may have sprung for the full 2mb kit back what 1.5 yrs ago... so that does not surprise me, but this definitely reported what I thought was correct.

David

P.S. core voltage is still showing at 1.525v, doesn't that seem way low?

you shouldn't worry if you CPU runs up to 65c, its when your over 70c that you should worry, i've stressed my setup at 70c (closed case) at 100% runnning CPU burn-in for over an hour with no worries, but would recommend having a HSF that is copper.

I'm just using a HSF from compusa that has a copper base that i lapped on both sides then lapped the aluminum heatsink, I believe that the Asus boards do report a lower temp, since my ASUS P4P800S would report 40c idle, and now my Albatron reports about 45c at idle which is probably more realistic. At load 100% load i'll hit about 62c which is ok since the fan never goes over 2800rpm which keeps the system more quiet :)

I guess my thing is for right now, I have a Zalman 9500 coming in the next couple of days so why push it too far. I also got the Artic Silver 5 thermal compound for the HSF. I also bought 3 79cfm 120mm Antec fans for the case, 1 additional external blower, and two that will ventilate the Mobo and HD's. Plus memory that should be here next week 2x1gb DDR500 G.skill. This all should set me up to see what my end OC will be, although my goal is looking a bit weak, but I might be able to get some performance boosts on the memory and maybe by OC'n the vid card if I buy a better heatsink for it...

Final option is going to water or A/C based system later down the road, who knows?

Having fun while I get there :p

WOW, nice cpu you've got there and this sure explains alot, EEs run hotter and are harder to oc

yep 1.525 sounds right

btw watch those temps, EEs have a lower threshhold than regular northwoods

Hmm that might mean depending on the Zalman 9500 performance either water or other extreme cooling is in my future. Well at least that explained a few things I'll monitor temps like a hawk!

Thanks for the info, it certainly does help!

David

P.S. Yeah nice processor but I ran that pi mod and really had some lack luster results on the 1M test at 45secs... So the system needs tweak'n. I'll post my starting benchmarks tonight sometime. I had CPU-Z open on each main screen and the 1M result. To show all the settings.

SPI scores rely alot on ram so thats prolly why

Since it appears that the ASUS P4C800E has the processor locked at 16x, I won't be able to seperate the Processor max OC from the Mobo max OC will I?

nope, but these boards usually do about 275-280 unmodded so the board wont hold you back

Not so great speed wise, but at least a starting point. Also notice how CPU-Z is showing the wrong info.

http://www.600hpmiata.com/pics/Everest Info.JPG

Everest showing correct info.

Hrmph.... Anyways time to get some base lines in everest as starting benchmarks.

David

P.S. I did register Everest since it actually worked :)

actually thats a decent time, SPI doesnt take advantage of all that cache so its pretty close to a regular northwood time, run some benches from futuremark.com to see the real difference between a gallatin and a northwood

btw in this case cpuz is correct, the s478 EE is indeed called gallatin

D

But better question would be why does it not show the L3 cache correctly?

So mine is a Gallatin? I guess I should change my sig, eh?

man I really dont know, tell you what when you get the new hsf take a pic of the cpu and post it or write down the specs off the IHS (especially the SLxxx)
