I just have set myself up a fund at the bank. I'll be diverting some of my own money over there and when it accumulates to 10k, I will be purchasing a farm. Currently I have one in the development stages.

Anyways, I might be moving to Maryland in a couple of weeks if the interview goes well. If not, I'll remain here and be a poor guy in the corner that nobody cares much about

:D I guess you could say that but it did not stop me from going to the bank and set up a fund... Now I guess even at 50-100 a month going into the bank unless I get a good paying job then I'm gonna invest more in it and so on... THIS IS MADNESS!

Remember to budget for the power used.
A farm that size will pull down ~3 kW/h.
Paying ~$0.08 Per kW/h means appox an extra $175 needed per month.
Trust me. It very soon adds up.

But nice goal ........... :p

If they're all on usb drives, just clone the usb drives with the bootable linux os, no cd drives needed.
 
Naked is good! I just wish those were quads and not just 2gig AMD XP's. It is kind of sad knowing how much I have spent over the years just to watch them cover in dust cause its not really worth running them anymore.

One of my friend also told me instead of a PPD Beast how about BRUTE POWER by running PS3s... That's an idea since some of them can be had for less than 400 dollars apiece if you can find them. However that'll mean I should be able to get 25 PS3 for the price of 10,000 not counting S+H, taxes and whatnot...

This however will only do about 900 PPD each thus 25 * 900 = 22500 PPD.

How about that instead? I wouldn't know the cost of running one at .08 pKw/h or whatever...

I guess I should shut up and start saving up for the farm then.


 
I need a farm in my basement during the winter. Would also probably stay cool enough in the summer. Anybody have experience with that?

Anyway, getting back on topic....you're assuming 4k ppd? Seems a tad aggressive to me. Although I'm used to working in Windows, and this would be some sort of Linux distro in use here...not sure how much more effective Linux is.
 
My feelings are that the FLOPS power > PPD. The more computing power you have the more benefit to the F@H effort. I would have bought one instead of my newest C2D box, but I couldn't convince my wife that I needed a 2nd ps3 instead of a 3rd computer :p

That and the PS3 is very quick to setup!

A PS3 pulls around 220 watts folding.
So ..........
0.220 x 25 x 24 x 30 x 0.08 = +$300 per month.

Bad for both points and power unless Stanford redoes the points per PS3 work unit.

I'm getting 1,600 PpD per client on my Xenons @2.66 Ghz.
So clock a Q6600 upto @3.2 Ghz, Run 2x Linux clients inside VM's = ~4,000 PpD.
Very easy doable with a bit of luck.
5,000 PpD needs a clock of @3.7 Ghz so is much more iffy.

The new 40GB with 65nm Cell draws 140W and it should be less once they change the RSX over to 65nm and/or the Cell to 45nm. Regardless, like you said, running a lot of PS3s is too expensive for the PPD.



 
Yes, 5000 ppd do need about 3.7 GHz that I reached with watercooling. It's cheaper to have 2 simple aircooled Q6600 at 3.0-3.2 GHz instead of a watercooled Q6600 at 4.7 GHz...

Oh it is so painful to make a typo of your own 2 seconds before you correct someone elses. ;)



 
Main think I would change concerning current parts would be bumping the heatsink up to the Tuniq Tower. It's hell on the motherboard but there are ways around that. I love the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro for the X2s and the brother for the Core2s but the Tuniq would cool better and it's only $40 at the egg right now. I just picked one up. It's fucking huge but it should do a good job. I'll find out tomorrow.

While the tower doesn’t do a bad job nothing I have tried can top the Thermalright ultra 120 6 pipe cooler. Second best believe it or not is their 92mm 6 pipe cooler with the 120 fan.

The beauty of the 92 is it will fit almost any mobo case combo and the mounting system is second to none.;)

 
Some tips, since I have a lot of those components in my farm...
Do NOT use the onboard LAN if you're using notfred's folding CD or any type of linux without a GUI. It most likely won't be detected.
Do NOT use the USB sticks to boot. It's really troublesome to get them to actually work (I have those exact same USB sticks also). I tried to do this to save money, but it's a bad idea--use CD drives.
DO use that PSU. It's really great--runs silent, it's cheap, stays cool, saves energy, and smells minty-fresh (well, the PSU equivelant of minty-fresh).

Hope that helps...looks like you won't really be getting to this project anytime soon anyway ;)
 
Just for information purposes.

The Q6600 is schedule for a price drop down to $224.00 US sometime in Late March or Early April.
