Feels good to be back.

Hmm even though I unblocked it with my Firewall, it seems it's being blocked or something?

Unable to connect to 'Syribo-PC:8676',
sock error: generic sock failure, error stack:
MPIDU_Sock_post_connect<1228>: unable to connect to Syribo-PC on port 8676, etc etc.

Are you running it under an administrator account? If you're using Windows Vista or 7, is UAC disabled?

I'm running under Admin (I even tried 'Run as Admin'), I have Vista and UAC is disabled... I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Okay I tried everything I could... I'm not sure if it's working properly, but I hope it is!

I think it's working!! :D

Edit: Oh yeah, I know that my two GPU clients aren't going right now. I was watching a movie on my TV with my friend and had to disconnect some things and am about to start them back up :)

Yay awesome!! Thank you guys so much! I thought I should have been getting more PPD and credit by folding on my Q6600!

Seriously, thanks again for walking me through this ;)

Dang, with your ramp you're now on my threat list. EOC is showing 3.9 weeks.... *sigh*

Most important thing for you to know is that the Windows SMP2 client/A3 work units kickass

Is there a guide for this? Freaky's missing it in his sticky :p. Sorry, I haven't been lurking the DC forums lately and a search didn't bring it up. Thanks!

also doesnt help that my cards been folding for over a week straight on her name which is rare.. my cards usually only folding 8 hours a day tops but ive been away from my house for the last week..

Just follow the SMP guide on Stanford's page, and I'd recommend using the MPICH SMP client (instead of the DEINO SMP client). The stickies [h]ere disappeared awhile back, but the ones Stanford has up are also done by Xilikon anyway (IIRC).

The DL page for the high performance clients is here.

Cool, thanks, Zero. I was about to download that client off their page, but it didn't say "SMP2", so I didn't think it was the right one.

I have a Q6600 and a couple Core 2 Duo PCs I would like to try this on. So running this SMP2 client on those PCs would give more PPD than Notfreds (what they're using now)?

Thanks again :).

Great to have you back Syribo, it's always good to see people return after a hiatus.
I hear you about the heat from a box being too much, last summer we had one hell of a heat wave here in Seattle and I had to shut down for a good three weeks.
Glad to hear you got everything all fixed up for some good points.

Oh yeah definitely. Get your passkey from Stanford's page (instructions on that are in the bigadv sticky), once you complete...10? (I think) A3 WU's you start getting bonus points like you would if you were running a bigadv system. Not the *same* amount of points of course, but you do get bonus points. ;)

I average about 8300PPD on a q9450@3.6 running SMP2....if you're not running bigadv, SMP2 with the native Windows client is definitely the way to go. :)

Sweet, thanks a lot, Zero. I've been running bigadv on my main PC (in sig) since November so I've already got a passkey. This will be nice to run on my laptops and Q6600 work PC :D.

Hehe, don't even worry about me right now. I actually cut down on the folding a little bit right now. Having a few hot days outside, and my computer temps were getting insane ;) Everything going slow and steady now, just have my SMP client going.

Also.. I still think something isn't right with my bigadv... How much PPD should I be getting from my Q6600 with that? It says 1060PPD in HFM.NET monitor (Yesterday it said FIFTY THREE... I then looked in the client window and saw that it was completing a step every ~4 hours, WTF? I restarted and it went up to 1000PPD but I feel that's still not enough).

check and make sure it is an A3 WU and not an A1 WU.. A1 WU's are still out there.. though rare to get now but they are still there.. the A1's are slow as shit..

Something is wrong. Stop and restart the client or the system itself. If that doesn't help, delete and DL another WU because that one is undoubtedly corrupt. There's no way you can make the deadline anyway with that TPF, whatever WU it happens to be.

Here are screenshots of two problems I'm having.

I'm afraid I don't see a problem with the SMP client...?

I have been experiencing this problem on my GPU clients as well. I attribute this to a crop of bad WUs. Stanford has had similar problems in the past, especially when a new WU series is released but it can happen at other times. The only solution I and other have found to help with this is restarting the system, unfortunately, but it does seem to help.

Well in that screenshot, that's after I restarted and that whole 'One step completed every few hours' thing stopped. I wanted to make sure it was back to normal :)

How much PPD should I be getting from my Q6600 with -bigadv anyway? I had it OC'd back up to 3.4GHz for the last few days, but had a few little stability problems yesterday so it's back at stock until I have the time to try and find a stable OC. I may end up keeping it at 3.2... but I know 3.4GHz can be stable for me. For months I had the system stable without one problem at 3.4GHz with the tiniest voltage adjustment. In fact, in this thread (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1138241) if you go down to the Q6600's, I'm at 3397mhz with just 1.251 vcore. I love the Q6600 I got :) I've been able to OC it pretty well... considering my mobo isn't really newbie-overclocking friendly.

Would a jump from stock to 3.4GHz have a decent improvement on folding? I don't notice the difference anywhere else since I rarely actually get up to 100% CPU usage :x I've still not gone over 4GB of RAM in use (All just according to Task Manager). But if it makes a difference in folding, I will most certainly OC this thing again for that reason mainly :)

Ah, it's OK then.

Almost any increase in frequency is worthwhile in folding especially with the A3 WUs and -bigadv because of the bonus points. The caveat is of course stability. If even one crash occurs due to OC, you should drop the clocks until full stability is reached. The reason is because any crash will cut production and actually reduce your overall PPD. More importantly, it affects Stanford since the crashed WU needs to be resent and completed by someone else. So, OCing is great providing you have full stability, beyond that it's detrimental to the user and to the project as a whole. :)

Oh exactly, that's why I have it at stock now until I have the time to try and find a rock solid stable OC again heh. An hour of OCCT followed by 24+ hours of Prime95 is what I start with. I thought I was good this time , but I wasn't heh.

My PPD will be lower for these few warm days. Supposed to get all cold and gross again soon yayy ;)

Unfortunately, it seems that everyone who has tried stability tools like Prime95 have found them not to be reliable when it comes to folding. A successful run in Prime95 and other testing tools might still be unstable in folding for the long run. In effect, the best tool to use for determining folding stability, is um, folding.

Having said that, the Q6600 is a legendary OCing chip. You can easily run this @3.0GHz and probably higher with a good cooling setup.

10-20 passes of IBT is about all you need for stability.. prime95 has out lived its usefulness.. you should easily be able to run 3.6ghz on that chip if you can run 3.4ghz @ 1.25v

Ahh! I didn't know all of this about Prime95! I used to use it each time I OCd along with a few other stress tests. But I would usually run Prime95 for the most amount of time. My best 3.4Gghz OC was stable and folding flawlessly for such a long time.. I never even had to restart the thing. So I know for sure I can get back there again :)

The temperatures are always great on this chip too, well.. as far as I know. I don't know too much about what are good, average or bad temps.. but I've had the -bidadv client going all day and the temps on the cores are 33C 37C 28C 32C . I'm also burning a CD.. folding on the two GPUs.. I have WoW still open, a ton of web browsing stuff, utorrent... I love this computer <3 I want an i7 but I'm hoping my Q6600 will last me for a long time still :) I think I really lucked out with a good chip.

..I wonder what I could get it up to if I ever figured out watercooling :p :)

What cooler are you using? In the case of -bigadv WUs, they are extremely sensitive to instability but you're not running them yet. I don't know how well A3 WUs stack up to high overclocks. Only thing you can do is try increasing it and if it fails, improve your cooling setup.

I would say around 4GHz and even higher.

4ghz on a q6600 is rare as shit.. they are decent overclockers but not great overclocks.. they seem to hit a wall at 3.6-3.8ghz no matter what voltage you use..

temps look good.. try pushing the overclock and voltage.. you have PLENTY of room temp wise..

I'm back to be more annoying with more questions ;) The WU I have folding on my SMP client right now has slowed down considerably, again.

I never remember having problems like this before, so I don't think this is normal behavior to happen constantly? My system is stable, it's at stock like I've said, temps are a bit higher right now as it's so incredibly humid in here (But is 42, 45, 36, 40 bad? That still sounds not bad to me). I just know I didn't usually have steps take HOURS like that... Should I restart my system again? Or just the client?

It's better for folding the longer your PC goes without shutting down or restarting, right?

If this looks okay... by all means just call me a noob and send me on my way :p I already know I'm still an idiot when it comes to folding. I don't know how I managed to get this far. ;)

all depends on the WU.. also if anything is running in the background taking away cpu cycles from the smp client.. your temps are perfectly fine.. absolutely nothing to worry about.. ya still have 40C of headroom before you hit the thermal limit on that processor.. my guess is that theres something running in the back ground thats taking away cpu cycles.. maybe a virus scanner or some other software..

If it takes a long time (TPF), longer than normal - check your cpu utilization. If it's running 50% while folding, it's an A1 work unit and those fold like crap....we've all had them before, don't feel bad. You can also check your logfile, if it says core a1 required then obviously it's an A1 WU.

Those temps are fine, btw. :)

Hmm, it says A3 and it's going at 100% (Has been the entire time.). No scanners or anything were going! I restarted the computer and look at the difference (On the same WU)

That slowdown thing is weird.. I will check some more, next time/if it happens again, and triple make sure nothing else is hogging the CPU.. but I doubt it :( At least it's okay.. for now! But I figure I'll never get to the bidadv one's at this rate ;)

And wow, I didn't know the temp threshold for the q6600 was that high! Even in the summer time I never got it over 58-62C on the hottest humid days. The video cards are another story :x I feel like it's so easy for them to get up and above 85C if I don't watch the ambient temp and adjust the fans (I like to turn the fans down as low as possible as they're so incredibly loud. But if it's REALLY hot, I'll put them up).

If you see a slowdown again, run CPU-Z and take a look at the speed your CPU is running at.

for the cards when your folding downclock the gpu's.. and leave the shaders overclocked.. even a 100mhz gain on the gpu from stock only makes up about 50 ppd.. so theres not a huge difference if you leave the gpu at the default clock speeds.. i run my GTX 260 @ 600/1458/1100 folding and 658/1404/1200 when gaming.. the 54mhz on the shaders makes up about 500-800ppd depending on the WU compared to the 35 PPD from having the gpu at 658 vs 600 but shaves 10C off my folding temp..

10-20 passes of IBT is about all you need for stability.. prime95 has out lived its usefulness..

Some people use IBT, some use Prime, some use OCCT, some use LinPack. They all accomplish the same thing.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that "prime has outlived it's usefulness". It still gets the job done in a relatively quick manner.
It's not like prime is an A1 WU to IBT being an A3. :p
