What is your fastest build time for a whole computer? I heard of contests like this so I was wondering what my time would be, I clocked in at 5:35. The fastest time I've ever seen in a contest was 4:34  . So whats you best time?

i'm gussing this doesn not include installing software, if so i wan't to know how to install windows in less than 5 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes the instalation is hardware only

I dunno, never really tried for speed.

I like to make everything neat and looking nice. That takes a long time tho, lol.

I take about 1 hour to install all the parts, and then a while to make the inside clean and relatively uncluttered, which is a pain.

It took me almost one hour and 30 mins to assamble the damn computer
The damn computer i am talking about is in my Sig. It took me damn 20min to figure out where the mobo risers go, 20 min to install psu, it took me 5 min to install mobo. 10 min to install cpu, memory, heatsink. 30min to install cd drives, harddrives and things. 15 min to install fans. and 5 min to connect wires. :) and now i have a nice computer that preforums like a 3.2ghz computer. :p  :D

I did one for a friend in about 9 minutes, I was late for work so I put it together as fast as I could. Once I got home I realized a few mistakes I made. I will never try to put a computer together that fast again, you're supposed to take your time and enjoy doing it... I put a piece of myself in with every computer I build.

I've never done it fast before. I try to savor it, like a good slice of pie. Though I could probably do it in under 10 minutes if I really wanted to.

When under the pressure, I have built a few in about 15 - 20 minutes each. But usually i like to take my time </nerdiness>

I do too. It's usually blood and maybe a little skin though. Most of the time I actually try to clean it out but I doubt I ever get all of it. :p

Anyway, I've never really timed how long it took me to build a system and I have never tried to speed build one. Most of the time, I like to keep the parts I have working so I don't try to build a system as fast as I can. It just leads to problems. Besides, I always double and triple check everything to make sure I didn't screw up and forget something.

In other words, I have no idea what my fastest time on building a computer is.

It takes me that long to figure out where those damn headers connect to the motherboard and then try and plug them in cos they're so small .

i want my stuff to look good and be nice.... i saw a competition on the old techtv and they are supposed to be computer experts and they forgot shit and plugged shit in wrong.... they sucked...
plus it takes me longer because i do it all with a pocket knife instead of a screwdriver... if i had a magnetic head one it would knock my time down significantly

plus the most of my time is the psu since i like to keep my case fairly clean
it wou8ld be easy to just throw all the shit in there asnd turn it on

it isnt that difficult to put parts together, a blind hyper monkey on crack can even do it. however it takes skill and time to make it look good. i love building so i take my sweet time putting the parts in, hiding all the cables, fan wires, etc...

Mine was 3 minutes 13 seconds and not knowing what I was doing. Assembled my first computer last year, got all the parts and was excited to put it together. After I assembled it, I took it out to school and let the teacher look at it. He worked on old School computers in the past, own a AMD computer and never built a P4 computer. We hooked up the computer and turned it on, and lo and behold, the computer ran perfectly, it just needed Windows XP.
Here's the catch, I have never built a computer before, I saw the insides of a computer, the one being a Tandy 286 computer. This 286 I owned for 13 years, gave up last year to goodwill. I was a natural to build computers, now I own 6 computers, which I had built myself.

It ain't all that hard to put a PC together, just put in the MB standoffs, line the MB up to the backplate, connect the power cable to the MB that only go in one way, attach the cpu first and heatsink, slap in the DDR or Sdram memory in the right orientation in the slot, slide in the drives, bolt them into place, attach the power cables to them, attach the IDE cables-floppy cable also, attach the IDE cables from the drives to the MB, attach the front panel led's and switches to the MB. Seat the PCI and agp cards into their slots and that all you have to build a computer.

I don't understand how certain women take 30minutes to get dressed and you guys build computers in 3 minutes?! :p.

I take my sweet ass time, clean everything up, and install the software the way I want to, and just make sure everything is working right.. so we're talking 3-4 hours max...

Build time for me is never rushed but there is one thing I think you can all agree to. Its hard to build a machine fast in a POS case (esp a POS case with a MiniATX Mobo). If I have a full size motherboard with a Lian Li case, it's easy to properly build a setup a system in 20-25 min.

A few years back, the place I worked at built their own computers. After building 100 or so, I think I got it down to about 15 minutes. That included taking everything out of it's box, installing it inside the computer (using all the screws, because these machines were going into computer labs, where all the little kids kicked the shit out of the computers), power testing it, and stacking it at the end of the room. When we were done with all 188, we had a mountain of boxes and other garbage at the end of the room that was over 15 feet high (easy to do when you have 20 ft ceilings).

4:02 minutes. This is when I was practicing for those stupid AMD Tour things one year.... But I like taking my time....for wire management sakes....

does this include setting jumpers and such to have everything working? if so ive built a pc in like 5-10 minutes just installing parts and setting jumpers, but generaly the case looks very cluttered and kinda like a spider web mess.

If by Jumpers you mean the front panel then yes. Te copmuter I put togethor didn't have front usb so I just had to do the power, reset, HD led and Power led. The computer I had was a PII so I saved a good 2 hours on the heatsink :p , but It doesn't have anything intagrated so I had to put in a sound card, video card, and network card. It acctually didn't look that bad as far as wiring goes.

When installing my K7N2, somehow my finger started bleeding. I couldn't tell because the mobo is red also....finally I noticed when a drop dropped on my yellow case. I didn't think anything of it until a week later when I wanted to double check everything I saw dried blood near a PCI slot. Also on the comp that I am using now (which has a crappy case) I have cut my finger numerous times. Lots of torn skin in there :(

Well, while building my parents computer, I didn't really care about how neat everything was, so I rushed through it so I could still go do something (forget what... but I wanted to do it.)

Assembled the computer in about 20-25 minutes, installed windows 98 in 5 minutes (Ghosted :)), Installed drivers/set up other software that wasn't with the ghost in about 20 minutes. So for a complete build, with software and OS install, it took me around an hour, give or take a few minutes.

But then again, I also had a ready to be ghosted copy of windows 98, and then I only had to install drivers, then setup Outlook Express for my parents, MSN and Winamp for my brother, and then AVG Anti-virus.

Note that this was my second build, so i think that's damn good. (I have built several other computers after this too, but took my sweet time doing it :p)

It took me about 1 hour to get all my parts from one computer, clean them with a vac, clean out my old case, put parts into new case, clean new case.

i guess it really depends...are you building whole new technology are just doing a tear down rebuild of stuff so you know where everything goes..

I would never ever rush my own pc esp if its all new...

haste makes waste..I generally take a couple hrs to do it..but then again I smoog the whole thing as i go along....

extra fans..redoing thermal compounds, cutting blowholes......

its not a race....

Usually I take 2-3 days just to make sure everything is setup right and debug it.

Working with electrical components is not something I'd wanna rush on and like most replies before, I actually enjoy the time to build a PC.

Mine about 1hr five minutes, Basically slapped it together, I didn't know what I was doing.
This was the first one I built last year in May 13,2003. I had a few friends starting to build them, I wasn't sure to buy a dell or build one, So I took the plunge to build one. Got all the parts, got the tools I needed and assembled it. I never saw inside a computer to see what is inside of one, but I did see inside of my Tandy 286 computer years earlier. Knowing that might help, I put the manuals to the side because I didn't need them just yet.
Completed it, I took it down to school to show my teacher. He worked on old school computers and maintained a lab of PC's, so he had never built a P4 machine, he did own a AMD computer he had built.

So we hooked it up, turned it on and it ran perfectly, it just needed formated and an OS. We formated the 60gb WD and installed Windows XP Pro.
Now I own 6 computers I have built, five is mine and one is my fathers. I gave up my Tandy 286 at the beginning of this year, found out that this old computer had an AMD processor running it and built my dad's computer using an AMD 1700+ processor. If my tandy lasted 13years so will my dad's computer. I think I am a natural to build computers, built my first, not knowing if it would work, everything in the case looked attached correctly, and it works.

OMG yes, I hate those stupid mobo headers. The usb and sound ones for front ports are even worse. On my Lian-Li it consists of like 20 separate individual pin leads...so much fun!

I consider my computers my art. I never rush and do everything right the first time. It can easily take 10-15 minutes just to open the packages and inspect the components. I would guess that it takes me about an hour to build one from scratch.

I can take the loose parts and have windows on it with all drivres and updates in 2 hours or less. :D

Does that mean you slice chunks off your finger? :p

I did my last one in about 30 seconds or so... only took that long cause I had to find somehting to cut the tape off the box. Damn dells at work :p

my roomate installed Windows XP Pro in less than 10 minutes :D

I also like to take my damn sweet time. It only happens a few times a year.. so I appreciate that! I loveee my computers! :D

....about 3 days. I built myself a new rig last year in the midst of renovating my house. I had no roof on the house but you could bet your ass i had a new rig going together!!
It took me a few hrs over 3 nights and a few slices of pizza do get it up and running. I'm all about taking my sweet time wire looming all wires and getting things just right. I want no suprises upon boot-up.

So, usually it takes me a few hrs to complete a rig. It's not a speed contest for me.
