What, that the FX line beats the 9x00 series in a DX9 game? Yes, that does suprise me.
Why wouldn't it?

Hasn´t John Carmack said that Doom 3 runs faster on Radeons and look better on FX:s? That was a long time ago though...

All of those comments he made about how it was running was awhile ago. He made those early comments about the performance on the GeForce line way back when the nv30 was first coming to the market. Likewise, his "boasts" about the radeon performance and compatibility were made back in the day when we were first being amazed by the 9700Pro.
So much has changed since either of those statements were made that I'm surprised people are still referencing to them for "proof". Wait for the game to get released people.....you can't say just squat until then.

Exactly my point But he has always said that it run better on nVidia and if we look at the previous DOOM and Quake game it may very well be better optimized for nVidia cards.
Note that there is no R300 specific rendering path. The R200 path has a slight speed advantage over the ARB2 path on the R300, but only by a small margin, so it defaults to using the ARB2 path for the quality improvements. The NV30 runs the ARB2 path MUCH slower than the NV30 path. Half the speed at the moment. This is unfortunate, because when you do an exact, apples-to-apples comparison using exactly the same API, the R300 looks twice as fast, but when you use the vendor-specific paths, the NV30 wins.
He was talking about 32bit color and how it's really 24bit with the last 8 reserved for rendering passes. Whatever the hell that means...I'm just repeating it.
The reason for this is that ATI does everything at high precision all the time, while Nvidia internally supports three different precisions with different performances. To make it even more complicated, the exact precision that ATI uses is in between the floating point precisions offered by Nvidia, so when Nvidia runs fragment programs, they are at a higher precision than ATI's, which is some justification for the slower speed. Nvidia assures me that there is a lot of room for improving the fragment program performance with improved driver compiler technology.

My apologies.
It was Gabe Newell (of UT2k4, etc) was ripping on the GFX cards pretty badly in an article I read a while back. (sorry, i have no clue where the link is).
He basically said that nVidia FX cards are a complete nightmare to program for, and he hates them.

Until they come out with a COMPLETELY new chipset from scratch, im still going to associate their entire product line with the 5800 card that they released and tried to sell.
I don't trust that company right now.
PS...I think that carmack himself said in an interview a while back that nVidia cards were impossible to program for, and that he completely backs ATI's hardware for Doom3...but that WAS a while ago.

gabe newell is a valve person, of HL2, who have been ripping on Nvidia ever since they began sleeping with ATI.
The Farcry demo also has lighting issues on FX's which are very annoying.

The tree lighting problem is downright ugly, you're right. It boggles the mind that Crytek, who originally gained fame for developing the dino demo for nvidia, has such issues with the FX series.
Hopefully these are driver problems that nvidia can fix and not a result of PS2.0->PS1.1 substitution![]()

Fallguy, what cpu do you have with the 9800 because those are some nice frame rates.

3.9gig P4.

It's nice to see some people showing some cold hard proof and some actual facts to back up a lot of these statements. I really couldn't care less about the AA bug with the Radeons right now 'cus just think of how it would run all cranked up WITH AA.
Farcry is a perfect example of where a lot games are going with DX9 technology and why you really can't trust those fricken "The way it's meant to be played" slogans.....utter garbage.![]()

That wasnt the lighting issues I was talking about, but perhaps its part of it. I dont recall it doing that in the beta, so perhaps its just the demo, and wont look like that in the retail game.
This is the lighting issue I was talking about. Taken with a 5900NU@5950 and 56.56 drivers. All quality set to the highest in game (cept AA) and in drivers also....
....There is the same issue in other games. Brents last review pointed it out in NFS:U as well. It started with the 52.16 drivers...
...."Extra High"

No wonder so many nVidia owners live in denial.Especially with propaganda like "the way it's meant to be played" ROFL that has become a joke to me. I will probably never buy another nVidia. If they lie about something that blatantly obvious, wonder what other little lies they pass on to unsuspecting buyers....?

most of the, the way its meant to be played games i've experienced actually run and or look better on the r3xx cards right now
