Fallout: New Vegas

Really? Didn't you like Fallout 3? Or is the openworld post-apocalyptic fallout genre not your preference?

I didn't like Fallout 3 that much, but I was curious to see if New Vegas would bring any kind of significant improvements. I have played the first 2, and that's definitely TWIMTBP ( )

Fallout 3 felt a little too Oblivion with guns, and even the cheat used to give myself unlimited currency worked, it made me feel disappointed, it just screamed lazy developers.

I know a lot of people liked it, and I'm not knocking anyone for liking it. Reading that Obsidian wishes to use the same engine doesn't exactly fill me with joy and get in line with a bunch of other lemmings to buy the game day 1 like I did with Fallout 3.

Lately, I've become jaded on gaming, there's fewer and fewer good games coming out, but plenty of overhyped "good games" that over-promise and under-deliver.

It's equivalent to Lucy snatching the football at the last second.

There just doesn't seem to be enough games that can fill a true gamer with much satisfaction anymore. Games like Dragon Age and Assassin's Creed 2 were games that came out lately that I feel were worth the money. I can't name many others. BFBC2 was a complete disappointment, so was Bioshock 2, and given how lackluster Fallout 3 was, I'm not really expecting this new version to be any different.

Fallout becomes a decent game when you try to imagine that it's called something other than Fallout.

As a Fallout sequel, it's a disaster. As a post-apocalyptic first-person action RPG, it isn't bad at all. It's probably also the first game Bethesda's released since Daggerfall that doesn't mandate extensive modification to make it playable (although Morrowind isn't shabby without mods, but benefits from a small handful of tweaks and fixes). The fact that Bethesda's so lax on DRM makes my buying decision fairly easy.

Just because you said the words post apacalyptic. I've not played it, but how close to fallout is metro 2033? I was just watching the trailer...And i'm sure that that is what fallout should be. It just looks like a darker fallout. It has the same apocalyptic setting...monsters etc. Maybe for fallout 4?
Also to do with account sharing. If they are using the steam cloud save file system, you can't just use offline mode can you???

Never played Metro, so I can't compare. Fallout doesn't feel like a horror, but like you're living somewhere in the 50's, with all the quirkiness that comes with it. You can listen to a radio station that plays music from that era. Just imagine what it's like if you lived in the 50's and the bombs from USSR and China dropped on us. Then imagine it being futuristic (from the point of view of the 50's). You have robots and technologies as people in the 50's imagined the future would be. Yet, there is little to no miniaturization: computers still use backup tapes, screens have old school text with no color, and depending upon the computers, mainframes taking up large rooms. At the same time, there are force fields, lasers, and mind affecting devices. And of course mutations. And lots of radiated zones to avoid. Some places do have the more darker/edgier feel. Actually, the game is pretty good about being what you want. You want to feel ganster/mobster, 50's style, you can. You want to feel like you're just surviving a wasteland, roaming around exploring new things. You can do that too. Or you want to experience the darker side of humanity. You can have that too.

If New Vegas is just Fallout 3 with some great plot that I know Obsidian is capable of, I'll be happy as can be.

I am bad at sentance construction! I meant I hadn't played metro 2033! But because it was on offer on steam, along with Vegas, I had a look at metro, and as usual now for a game there is little information and no demo. Fallout does feel like horror in some places. Mainly the tunnel sections. It definately could become a very claustrophobic twitchy shooter with a little tweaking. Or even with the GECK. But the setting is similar, but as I said, theres little information on the page about it, I can't tell if its open world or anything really. I can tell it has guns and is in russia, in the future, and theres monsters/aliens.

One thing I thought was missing from fallout was body modifications like bad cybernetics, and mutations due to constant radiation. I know what you mean about various ways to play the game, I played the whole game drug addled treasure hunter. Who killed everyone bad. Then after the same killing everyone good. I really liked the feel of the game added by the 50's music.
But why i'm still undecided is because...i'm not sure how different it is to the old fallout. Its not fallout 4, its fallout 3.1 It looks the same, it sounds the same, it seems to have similar combat, enemies etc. So would it just be reliving the experiance I had 2 years ago? It just something visual, something to distract me from the similarity.

You can get a mod where you can play as a ghoul if you want.

For NV much of the art and probably some of the sounds will be the same. Now that I think of it, animations (maybe even facial) might be the same too. But Obsidian is a different personality. As far as plot, story, dialogue, and characters it probably won't feel like a Bethseda game. Those are the things that Obsidian is good at. I think Obsidian can do far more if they actually try to stick to the Fallout 3 base, rather than revising everything. Sure, improvements in combat mechanics, extra things with karma... those are good, but they would be smart not to change too much. That way the spend more resources and time on what they are good at.

On a random note...here's one overhaul I would be fine with...
I would like a more FPS gun aiming feel (where skill determines recoil control, steady/unsteady aiming, etc..) ... but that's just a personal preference that RPG purists would probably crucify Obsidian for. Then again, fallout might open up to a larger crowd. :D Everyone should try Fallout 3 with FWE on. More roleplay and combat realism. Infact, FWE might let you play a ghoul with full radiation resistance if I'm not mistaken.

Its controller enabled. So unfortunately it seems unlikely! But if they are keeping the same engine and structure, surely most of the earlier mods won't need much tweaking to work with this new game, and new mods shall have a head start over other games.
That was one thing I thought was missing, races. You couldn't be anything other than a human. But then again I suppose being a ghoul wouldn't have fitted with the main plot, nor would being a robot or mutant. Unless you slowly became one! Damnit, has anyone made a slow mutation mod???

Actually they said in a recent interview they went and re-did a lot of the sounds and animation and a few models were retextured and slightly tweaked (Super Mutants especially).
