Fallout 4

I really enjoyed the Fallout series, I haven’t played them all but I enjoyed them. Got a PS5 recently, haven’t gamed in years (years and years), is there anything I need to do to get this update? I have the PS game pass and Fallout 4 was one of the “free” games.
Nothing. When it launches it will probably be a regular update, like Skyrim was.

Probably going to do a Survival playthrough soon. Any recommended mods specifically for Survival? Want to stay as close to vanilla as possible, I was originally going to do it unmodded.

Do it unmodded first. If you find that you are struggling greatly then get a mod that reduces the affects.

I ain't no bitch.
Mostly just looking for UI and QoL mods. It's been 3 or 4 years since I last played.
The only mods I would recommend on that difficulty, are the portable sleeping bag mod and the mod that enables quick saving.
Both which pretty much defeat the purpose of survival mode. You could also just round it off with a good damage multiplier.

I use the all Legendary enemies mod in conjunction with a level scaling mod, and the multiple enemies mod with the above. And I use one of the enable more enemy spawn mods if I get bored, as well as getting the all DLC creatures to spawn in the Commonwealth mod.

I would get you all the mods names from the Nexus, but I'm too lazy, and since this is not your first rodeo, I'm sure you can find them.
And I'm drunk.

I loved fallout 3. So I tried fallout 4. Holy crap. Big difference. There is no tutorial showing you how to do anything. No idea how to travel. Or build anything. Or use the damn suit. Or what to do. I gave up. I just don't have the time to faff around for hours on end figuring out how to even basically play the game. Fml.

Spent the last few days grabbing mods. Went through my old modlists from past playthroughs, some Reddit recommendation threads, popular mods on Nexus, etc. I tried to avoid anything that altered base gameplay elements; no weapon mods, no enemy mods like Super Mutant Redux, etc. Also tried to keep it small, I don't want the game to get busted halfway through.

I did end up taking Journey to fast travel between settlements. I also took Sim Settlements 2, even though the original mod broke my last playthrough in 2018.

Also extremely impressed with FallUI. No more dealing with DEF_UI and all the sorting/icon mods. It's all just in one package.

You'll have to be careful with SS2 (plus it's expansion). Do things in the exact order for quests, not a lot of leeway because of the scripts. Positioning relative to the quest object is important, too, many times you'll think the script went off the rails when you needed to be a few feet to the west when interacting. Plot types can be confusing, you need certain entertainment plot types to 'train up' settlers to use in the HQ in part 2. The depth to this mod is incredible. Also, I'll throw my usual recommendation for Companion Ivy. Be careful with 'Startmeup', it doesn't play nice with some other mods. I start the game and play through to just before exiting V 111, save, and copy that save someplace safe. When I need to start over I just pull out that save so I don't have to drag through the start scenes. Mods don't load until you exit V 111.

I really really want to give this game another shot. How accurate is this list of 15 things you must do

https://www.gamesradar.com/fallout-4-tips/

Crafting, workbenches, modding equipment, building settlements, power armor, and many more things I have no clue about how to start doing. This would be my 3rd attempt at trying to play this game. I'm wondering if it is even worth the effort? Last time I gave up 15 hours in.

What I miss is the exploration of the post apocalyptic world. Fallout 3 gave me good bumps I loved it that much. But fallout 4 is feeling like a chore I don't even know how to do? Everyone else struggled to figure all this crap out also right? There is no guide to show you and it is not intuitive at all.

If I don't play this it's gonna be red dead redemption 2 or spiderman just not sure.

If you think scavenging for resources to use at the the workbenches and armor racks is a pita, you can always use a batch file. They are super simple to make and to use, plus the game won't flag it as a mod so you can continue with achievements.

I will give you one for free.

All you need to do is open up Notepad and copy and paste this into it:

Save it and name it whatever you want. Then go to your main game install folder, and drop it in where the exe. is.

Then while in game, you press the ~ key which will bring up the console, and type bat then the name of the file you saved and press enter.
I named mine stuff, so I would type bat stuff then enter. I use this batch file at every workbench I come across.
Just be aware this gives you 5000 of every resource item so it will overburden you. Make sure to do it while standing next to a workbench then dump all of it in there.
Most of the time when you come back by that workbench, the resources will still be there. If not, just type it in again.

This! I enjoyed almost every aspect of the game except the running around looking for trash items to get resources. As much stuff as I built I bet it would have tripled my total game time if I hadn't used the console commands.

As someone who has over 5,700 hours into Fallout 4 and every achievement, if you need help, let me know.

There are plenty of ways to get the resources for the settlements, clothing, armor, weapons, etc without having to go through a lot of rigmarole to achieve what you want to match your playstyle. I've posted a whole slew of times in this thread helping people out and will continue to do so. TaintedSquirrel had one good one and I've done that before. I normally keep the settlements at 1/3 resource gathering then the rest at medic, bar, with a few on guard duty. But hey, we all have our different play styles.

How. The fuck. Could anyone spend 5700 hours in FO4.

Lots of replays as different characters with different attributes making different choices each time. I've logged well over 6000 hours playing the Mass Effect trilogy since 2013. Even so, there's not as much disparity between different replays as you might expect.

Really easy. I was down for roughly 18 months due to an injury sustained in the Marines. Had 1000 before the end of 2015.

The rest of the time was modding the hell out of the game as well as building up settlements and exploring. Plenty of my posts in this thread to reference.

Why do you need to? You don't need to touch every facet of the game.

It's not a hard game, you can basically just play it the same as Fallout 3.
Wait can you play and beat Fallout 4 without Crafting, workbenches, modding equipment, building settlements, power armor? And would it be significantly more difficult ignoring these things?

Do you have any good YouTube guides that can explain the PC version of what to do?
I couldn't figure out anything. I know I sound like a noob but it's true. I couldn't figure out how to do anything with the armor I don't even know how to get in or out of it. Don't even get me started on crafting or settlements not a clue what button to press or what I'm doing and how?
I can't believe there isn't a simple text saying "press f" to activate or build or whatever it's all just blank they expect you to know how to do it and why. I've never played a game with so little guidance or clues on what to do or how to do it.

Bro thanks you but this is waaaaaay over my head. I can't even do simple interactions let alone modding anything lol

Wow that's cool. My favorite part of fallout 3 was when you discover a new area while exploring. That feeling was so eerie and fascinating lol I want to experience that in fallout 4 with the graphics maxed out lol.

Try Sim Settlements 2 (https://simsettlements.com/site/index.php), not only builds up your settlements, has a pretty good quest line. They have options of placing your own layout or choosing one of the user-designed settlements, then assign a mayor. It's kind of a 'set it and forget it' mod. Plus, the community there is diverse and incredibly helpfull. One caution, SS2 is really, really script-intensive, so some mods will not play well with it (mods that are also script-intensive). So a hefty pc is advised.

You don't really need metal armor, you can add to your vault suit only if you want (but then you miss all the mods with 'ahem' skimpy armor), as someone else said, the possibilities are endless. Can't sneak around in metal armor.

It's easy to have the hours add up, I have almost 4,000 hours in, different companions and different mods with added quests, mix and match. Note that a lot of modders left Nexus when they changed their policies, so some of the classics may be hard to find.

Call me oldschool but I really don't want to mod the game before my first playthough, if that makes sense. I want to get the pure experience as the developers intended.

I'm about to download it again. Wish me luck guys =/

Not sure if it has already been mentioned in the thread, but since I see people are still discussing manually making modlists...

Nobody has time for that anymore. There are now curated collections you can automatically download/install using either Nexus Vortex or Wabbajack.

Nexus Vortex FO4 Collections:
https://next.nexusmods.com/fallout4/collections

From what I hear, "A StoryWealth" (over 500 mods) is the only "big" one in the Nexus Vortex that is worthwhile. It has a team of people that create and maintain custom patches to ensure compatibility/balance between the huge amount of mods, whereas the other big collections are thrown together with compatibility in mind, but without much custom work to solve all remaining compatibility/balance issues. Otherwise go for a much smaller collection.

Wabbajack collections generally all have a lot of custom patching like "A StoryWealth", so any of them should work well:
https://www.wabbajack.org/gallery?selectedGame=Fallout 4

NOTE: Click "show unofficial lists" checkbox to see all "unofficial" collections. Sometimes popular/good lists are unofficial.

"Magnum Opus" (almost 800 mods) is the largest of the Wabbajack FO4 collections. It features more graphics upgrades but less added content than SW. SW includes some controversial (but popular) content that people argue over concerning its quality and lore-friendliness, but even ignoring that specific content, SW still has more content overall (though MO also has content SW doesn't have). I tried both for a while before the Next Gen update was announced - decided to stop playing and wait for that.

Personally though I wish SW didn't include that controversial content, which does sound like it would be somewhat lore-unfriendly to me, I still preferred SW. The added content was noticeable from the start. And MO added content was not all high quality - it did include some low quality content too like SW. If you prefer more realism, there is less loot in MO - but that is not what I like in Bethesda games. Also did not like that MO added a large amount of forest to the wasteland everywhere.

Bottom line:
Collections from both these sources (Nexus Vortex and Wabbajack) massively automate the download, installation, and configuring of curated and custom-patched modlists. Huge time savings for anyone that wants to play a heavily modded game without spending dozens or more hours putting things together.

For the big mod packs, Wabbajack is incredible; I've tried it for Fallout 4 and Skyrim. It was easy to add 219 mods for the Whispering Chills pack with a few clicks and a few in game options changes.
I haven't tried Nexus mod collections for any game except Stardew Valley, but it work well for that game.

Have mod authors pulled the stick out of their asses and embraced mod collections, or are there still some of them who have their panties in a twist about it? I recall certain high-profile modders tried to stir up controversy when Nexus announced their full support for the idea, but the people have chosen to overwhelmingly support it. I certainly won't miss the days of taking an entire weekend to install and test mods myself.

Yep, I remember back when people tried to create custom installers for mod collections on various games, listing the included mods, linking to them, and crediting their creators. Yet people would still flip out that they were "stealing people's work." Since Nexus themselves officially embraced collections, I think what happened was the communities rightfully abandoned those mods made by morons with that anti-community attitude. Unfortunately, there is still some remaining opposition to mod collections in general, including in other games.

I actually think the developers/publishers themselves should officially ban public mods that don't "allow" their work to be included (with credit) in other mods/collections. Utterly arrogant to create work based on someone else's work, not even have the legal rights to that new work you created, and then say "nope, this is mine, you can't use that." The only thing that could get tricky is dealing with situations where people accept donations for their work - who should get what when both the original creator and the "new" person using some of their work in their own work are accepting donations. That is just a matter of creating a fair consistent framework though.

Bumping thread to inform you all of a fairly new mod for Fallout 4.

FATE (F04 Fixes and Technical Enhancements)

Warning: It is highly recommended to start a new game after installing the mod. Installing mid-game may lead to unexpected glitches and or instability.

This mod combines 220+ bug fixes and enhancements to Fallout 4 which are not covered by the unofficial patch. I've been running the mod for the last couple of days and already I can see improvements as specified in the mod's change log. Performance isn't impacted on my system, runs smooth as butter although your experience may vary.

what happened to the next-gen update?...is Bethesda waiting until after the Starfield release?

I bet they don't fix the shadow & performance issues in Boston.
There has been many a mod to "fix" that area. Depending on which build of FO4 you choose to use, will decide which version of the mod and which mod you use.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26286/
This was the go to for quite awhile before UF4OP 2.1.3. dropped. There have been a lot of hotfixes for it though, but personally I still use it with certain builds of FO4.
Its all about load order and permissions.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/36352?tab=description Depending on my load order and the run through I'm deciding to use, I will also use this.

Lots of trial and error getting them to work because of some ini's breaking these mods, especially scrap mods. I've had good runs and bad runs with both mods to be honest.
But when they work, they work great.
Running a lean list will have them run at their best to be sure though. YMMV.

No news since the 25th anniversary last year. Maybe they're waiting for the 26th anniversary? Somebody noticed that the non-public repositories on Steam have been updated frequently in the past couple months, so maybe we'll get it sooner.

Haven't played FO4 in a while, all the mods that claimed to have fixed it when I was playing didn't fix it, but rather just put a bandaid over it, such as lowering shadow detail / distance ect...

The problem I hear is that the engine itself doesn't section off the shadows but rather sees the shadows as a whole, so when you look in a certain direction you see every possible shadow drawn from every building weather you can see inside it or not.

If I ever get back into playing it, Ill try these out.
