Good idea.

Vista can bring up issues and added complexity I'd rather avoid for a simple folding box. It's why I either opt for Win XP or 2000. For a folding farm, the only Vista machines I'd even think of incorporating are laptops that have it pre-installed and require Vista for full functionality, or a general purpose machine that for whatever reasons (ex. gaming) stands to benefit from Vista's advantages. Otherwise, I stick with tried and true OSes that have lower resource consumption. I'm eventually going to replace all my Win 2000 boxen with Linux as soon as I find a distro that I like and is relatively simple to install/use.

Well, the dedicated boxes I'm in charge of run Linux client that Notfred set up. That makes things much easier.

That observation is correct. The only Vista boxes I have is my main PC and my HTPC box (need Vista for the Media Center software). The rest is either running native Ubuntu 64 or windows XP 32 bits for the simplicity and better performance.

Xubuntu would be another good choice for a lightweight free OS. It's what I have running in my VMs and seems to work well. It was pretty easy to setup samba and install fah as well. It's meant for older systems and laptops that won't run normal distros well, so I figured it would be good for VM duty.

Yes, my choice as well for all my VM, version 8.04 myself.

I must say, I'm quite pleased with the SMP clients. It's amazing that they can run at 100% when you're not doing much of anything, but if you need to do a whole ton of multi-tasking.. they actually don't make ANY difference in performance at all! I'm so happy that something is finally eating up my cores

Still trying to get FahSpy to see my XP folder, but now I know what the problem is so that should be fixed soon You guys have been such a great help.. Whee I'm so happy I'm folding! FOR THE [H]ORDE!

Glad to see you have the most important issue worked out. Everything else is just gravy after that.
