Well, if you remember.. I was having trouble with the SMP client on my computer. Let me find the thread and link it... Actually, there were two...

In the second post, you all walked me through instlaling within a VM, and I still got the same problems within the VM too... I finally gave up, and just continued running the graphical client on my old Dell (Specs in the signature).

But.. I need MOAR than that!! This has been driving me nuts! So I tried installing the text-only client on my Dell, and it works. Then I tried the SMP client and.. guess what... The SAME problem I have on THIS computer happened on my OTHER computer.

Okay.. so that must mean that something is up with my router, perhaps? I know you guys don't want to read through my old threads.. but.. if anyone can help me, and take the time to help me with this, I would love you forever ;) I'm going crazy here.

The only client I can get to work on my new computer is the text-only console. The graphical client always 'can not find work'... And I REALLY want to get the SMP client to work! I'm going to actually reply to this with the exact problem I get on this computer, and on my other one too... Maybe someone will be able to figure something out :(

It would appear that your still entering a name when it asks "account (domain\user)."

No matter WHAT I put in, I still get the same error. I do it just by hitting enter, typing in a name, it doesn't matter. Same thing happens every single time.. Just using Vista, or even using Ubuntu by VM. I've followed all of his steps... And still I get the same problem (Now on BOTH computers)..

I just don't get it.

EDIT: Also, when I do "Run as Administrator", this is what happens right away:

when it says username:[username].... just hit enter, thats your user name as the computer sees it.
 
I dont think its your router.
I think its an internal premissions problem.

What anti-virus/firewall are you running ?

How close to following This Vista Guide are you ?
Have you tried running the install.bat via a command prompt in admin mode ?

I'm sorry I cannot help more but no Vista here ......... :cool:
Tried it once and was far to much hassle having to set it to run with unsigned drivers everytime it rebooted.
But I did get it to work.

I can not run SMPs outside of VM. I can NOT run the SMP on EITHER computer... so it CAN'T be Vista. I'm getting the same EXACT problem, as posted above, on both my old Dell, and my new computer.

I also do hit enter after it asks for username... it doesn't make a difference if I put in a name or not, it says the same exact thing.
 
Here's my rough guide to installing on Vista 64 (non-VM):

- Download the SMP client (I'm still using version 1)
- Install to a directory outside the Program Files directory, I choose c:\folding (this is critical, the Program Files directory is locked down in Vista)
- Run the command prompt as an administrator (start -> all programs -> accessories -> right click 'command prompt' and run as administrator'
- In the command prompt, change directory to the one you installed in, ie: c:\folding. Typin install, follow prompts using default (just press enter) for accounts and type in your password for the current account twice.
- You should see the message twice, and then you can go ahead and run fah.exe from the c:\folding directory.

* One thing to note is I don't run any software firewalls, make sure you don't have any enabled that might be blocking local access to the port in question.

As far as why it isn't working on your old Dell I have no clue. And as Tigerbiten said, good luck if you want to run VMs in Vista 64, it's a pain in the ass.

If two computers are experiencing the exact same symptoms, I would look outside of the computer. The router just might be the issue.

Of course, your computer might also hate you for all the pro-Penguins comments you post from it. Im just saying.... :D

NOD32 is the anti-virus program that causes the most trouble with the SMP client.
I would uninstall NOD32 and then reboot, not just stop it, before trying to run the install.bat.
If that works then you could aways reinstall NOD32 once you have got the SMP client running.

NOD32 is NOT compatible with SMP Client Version 5.91beta6 on Vista 64 when running outside of a VM. Realtime protection must be disabled or the FAH client will have I/O issues or other mysterious hangs. Eset knows about the problem but has so far not provided a fix (even with the latest 3.0.657 build). There is no workaround here. You lose realtime protection if you want to run the FAH software. The free AVG AV appears to work fine as an alternative.

Okay, does the SMP client not work AT ALL with ANY version of Windows that also has NOD32? Because, I have XP on my Dell, not Vista.. and it also has NOD32.
 
Oops, I saw Vista 64 above and thought that was it. I think I have heard it is more forgiving with XP, but I don't have any first hand knowledge of running the two on XP. To be safe in XP, I think you would need to exclude the folder that contains the FAH software from active scanning.
 
Well I'm going to try and uninstall NOD32 first on my XP machine, then see if install.bat works.. If it still gives me the same problem, then it's not the AV.
 
Wow... So I uninstalled NOD32, and now when I try to put in my password, then confirm it, in the install.bat .... I just get this:

And I AM putting in the right password.. I did it over 10 times, and tried without and with putting in the username just to see... I don't understand how uninstalling the AV would now be doing this. I am doing everything exactly the same as I was before... God, I really have horrible luck :(

now we just need to find someone. I had major problems my first time also.

I would start by using something like revo uninstaller to completely remove all the F@H clients to start, then you have a fresh slate.
 
Oh, good idea :) I'll try using that now to uninstall everything.. Or rather, if I can find someone who will help me, I will just wait until then to uninstall.. Because I have the text-only console running right now.. And I want it to run as much as possible since my XP machine seems too slow to fold.. I'm not sure what client to use on there. I've been using Graphical, but I now am doing the text-only.. and it's so very slow on there.
 
So.. how much better is the SMP client as opposed to text-only? Also, how much better is the text console compared to the graphical client?.. Since this is all I can get to work..

On my E6400 its about 500PPD for a couple console clients, and just under 1500PPD with the SMP client.
 
my e8400 was getting about 25-2600ppd with the smp vs. 600ppd w/ the graphical client.



 
Oh geez.. that's such a huge difference! I MUST get the SMP client working :( :(

 
And we'll try out best to help do so. But honestly I haven't seen anyone get this much trouble with smp client.

 
Okay, I'm grasping at straws, but how exactly are you running install.bat? Are you just double clicking it in the explorer window?
 
While running the text-only client on my Vista machine... I think I've been getting some more problems.

When it finally finished the last step on a WU, it said this:
Finished Work Unit:

Now it started from step 31 on the same WU and is still working... This is really weird...

Yes... And I've tried right clicking and running it as Administrator. Each way gives me a different problem.

Well, if you have UAC turned off, then this should matter, but just in case.

Try running from a elevated CMD prompt. In Vista, click the start button and type CMD, but don't hit enter. When CMD.exe pops up in the search results right click it and choose "Run as Administrator". A command prompt window will pop up in C:\Windows\System32. If it's in C:\Users\<user name>\ then it didn't run as an administrator.

Navigate to the FAH install fold by typing "cd \fah-smp" or whatever your FAH folder is named. Then type "install.bat" and hit enter.

I wonder if the space in your user name is causing the problems you're seeing. All my systems just have a single word username.
 
Are you able to even ping any of your workstations? Either via 'ping <hostname>' or 'ping localhost' under command prompt?

I don't remember if this has been brought up, but do you have Windows Firewall disabled?
 
I had it enabled just now, but I have tried in the past with it enabled and disabled, uac enabled and disabled, and always the same results. I'm about to disable it again, with UAC also off, and see if it works.

Edit: Same problem.

It doesn't show up in services... Should it? The text-console one does.. Should I uninstall everything, and delete the text-console client, and then reinstall the SMP client.. again?

I bet it's that space in your username. MPI is a linix app and they don't much like dealing with spaces. Maybe I'm wrong though, but it's worth a shot. Set up a user account without any spaces in it and try setting up the SMP client from that account.

Since you haven't actually made it to installing the actual FAH program, it wouldn't be in services yet. Right now you're just trying to get an application installed that FAH-SMP needs before it can run.

In his earlier post he had a user account without a space and it still said connection refused.
