Everex XT5000T Support thread

The guy I sold my xt5000t says that it no longer will post. Just has the hd led and a few led lights turn on and then nothing. Screen stays black. Anyone having the same issue? I would like to help him out if I can. It was never overclocked and when i had it all I did was upgrade the ram.

It seems to be a fairly common problem, at least by the feedback on the Everex boards. Unfortunately the only solution is a new motherboard. Everex seems to be fixing units with this problem for free even after the warranty has expired, so perhaps you two can work together to get it done.

Thanks Willywanker. I will check out the everex forums. I really liked this laptop, but if a lot are dying after one year I would probably avoid everex in the future.

So I just upgraded from Vista Home Premium 32bit to Vista Ultimate 64bit on my laptop. It's lightning fast, but I've run into a small snag...lack of drivers. Here's what I've got so far:

Video Card:
- Hacked drivers provided by www.laptopvideo2go.com

Sound Card:
- Driver provided by Everex: http://www.everex.com/support/xt5000t/xt5000t_downloads/vista/audio.exe

Hotkeys:

Silent Mode Button:
- Driver Provided by Everex: http://www.everex.com/support/xt5000t/xt5000t_downloads/vista/silentmode.exe

Chipset:
- Working drivers available via Windows Update.
- Working drivers available on installation DVD (not on the website)
- CPU Clockspeed scaling appears broken when runing on batteries. Stuck at 800MHz.

Card Reader:

"Lightning fast" was not my impression. The XT5000T is underpowered for Vista IMHO. Works great for XP.

But stick a card in the reader and see what happens.

The XT5000T is perfectly capable of supporting Vista, the one thing that really makes it feel sluggish is the low-RPM hard disk it comes with. Change that out for a 7200RPM drive, bring it up to 2GB of RAM, upgrade to a 64bit edition of Vista, and it's a hell of a lot faster than out-of-the box :D

Yes it runs Vista with everything turned off. So ... XP ... I have Vista 64 w/4GB ram and still use XP. It's the CPU that holds it back. Be sure to turn aero on.:D

Hey if you like Vista on it then go for it. I don't. My Gateway P-7811, now that runs Vista!

Think about what you're saying for a second. You're trying to tell me the hardware accelerated graphical user interface, which when Aero is enabled runs on your graphics card, is acting sluggish because of a CPU limitation?

Error, does not compute.

I'm running Aero with all the DWM effects turned on as well as a DreamScene animated wallpaper with hardly any CPU load at all, which backs up what I said before, the 7600Go is taking care of the hardware accelerated desktop as well as the video decoding. If you're experiencing high CPU load, you might need to try updating your video drivers or check your configuration to make sure hardware acceleration is working properly.

No, I wanted to create a vision of your lap bursting into flames while running Aero and stressing the video. There is more than one reason why Vista is not the best decision on the XT5000T.

You may have the igloo model and not have to worry about heat. LOL

Interesting problem has cropped up, my processor appears to be stuck at 800MHz and won't clock up...suggestions

Edit: only seems to be locked at 800MHz while on batteries, if I plug in it goes up to 1600MHz. Any way to fix that?

Nope, tried that, Vista power scheme is set up correctly.

When plugged in it acts as expected, when unplugged it's locket at 800MHz no matter what.

Tried to use RMClock to correct the issue...this is going to sound weird, because it works, but I can't use it.

Vista x64 requires signed drivers, and RMClock's 64bit driver isn't signed. What this means is every time I boot my system I'll be forced to press "F8" to disable signed driver checking. There's no way to automate the process, microsoft removed the ability to do so in a critical patch.

Besides the driver not being signed, it also causes my computer to BSoD at random, so there's obviously a reason it's not signed :p

Is there an updated chipset driver or something for x64 to make C&Q work correctly?

32bit windows does not make cool and quite work properly under Vista x64.

If you don't want to help that's fine, but please keep your trap shut if all you're going to do it bash 64bit Windows.

Fine then, suffer with x64 Vista. No skin off my nose. But in the future do not ask for advice if you're not willing to accept any. There is a reason 90+% of Vista users don't use x64 -- it's more aggravation than it's worth.

I'm perfectly willing to accept advice that is relevant to the issue at hand. As I've already explained, you aren't offering any relevant advice.

I've also explained you would be better off not saying anything farther if all you're going to do is bash Vista x64, yet you persist, and it's beginning to look a lot like trolling.

See, it's you that really doesn't seem to get it. When you use an OS that is under-supported by the entire computing industry you're going to have all sorts of compatibility and driver issues. This is why the vast majority of people don't use x64 Vista. Call it "bashing" if you want, but the facts speak for themselves.

Now you can choose to act like you're on Microsoft's payroll and extol the wonders of x64 Vista (and continue to deal with an OS that doesn't quite function properly for you) or you can bite the bullet and install 32-bit Vista and move on with your life.

Don't shoot the messenger. I'm only telling you what you already know but are too boneheaded to admit.

Personal insults now? Are we really going to devolve to that level here?

You want to talk about facts, fine by me, it's fact that may gamers, developers, graphic artists, etc want x64 native computing for the extra speed and address space it is able to provide. I honestly don't see how you can call it under supported when even PC's sold at BestBuy are coming with 64bit Windows out of the box.

More on topic, even Everex has a full set of Vista x64 drivers on the CD that come with the xt5000t, ready to go. I run into a single relatively small issue regarding clockspeed scaling (which only occurs under one curcumstance), and you want me to jump ship abandon all hope and change OS's? Doesn't that sound a little drastic for an issue that's probably correctable with a simple driver update?

In the time you've spent talking down your nose at me, you could have been a productive member of our forum community and possibly helped a fellow member sort out an issue.

Since you seem to be so dead set on my switching back to 32bit, maybe you'll help me solve an issue with the stock 32bit version of Vista that comes on the xt5000t. It's completely unusable because Nvidia's display driver causes a BSoD every 10 minutes or so. The x64 driver doesn't seem to have this problem, so if you can give me a solution for 32bit I'll gladly switch back!

Even if you were able to solve this problem I can almost guarantee you'll run into many many others.

Although x64 Vista has its place in very special circumstances it is far from being a "mainstream" OS.

If you're having issues in 32-bit Vista with the video driver might I suggest you try a different/newer one. A good place to start would be www.tweakforce.com or www.laptopvideo2go.com.

And I *am* being productive. I am attempting to save you and others from many hours of frustration and aggravation. Ultimately the choice is yours. But don't say I didn't warn you.

You're telling me to change my entire OS rather than making any sort of stab at the issue at hand with the current one, and then you go on to make fortellings of greater doom ahead if I don't change my path and reconcile the hanis transgression of running a 64bit operating system...no better than all the Windows haters screaming "Install Linux" really.

As for the video driver on 32bit vista, I've got a checklist of 23 different driver versions, and every single one of them so far has the same BSoD issue. x64 drivers continue to be stable.

After poking around, I've been hearing murmurings that the wifi card in these laptops could be to blame, and there's so kind of replacement for the internal card from MSI that recognizes as a USB device and avoids the fatal IRQ conflict.

Anybody have any information on what specific card this might be?

Hi,

I have not posted here in a while, but been reading the topic, since I do own an XT5000T, and I am happy with it !

64 vs. 32 bit issue aside, I used to have the BSOD problems in the very beginning, but I remember that one of the windows updates fixed that. I think it was the Atheros driver that was causing some sort of conflict with NVidia driver. I have not had a single BSOD problem since. Unfortunately I can't provide you with the particular update number since this was over a year ago. I just remember getting it off the Windows Update. Of course, now that you switched to 64 bit this is no longer an issue (I hope), but for others who might still be suffering it is worth a try.

Can't help you much with 64 bit, since I have no experience running it on XT5000T, sorry.

DK

The PCI-e mini card slot and the 7600 GPU share an IRQ, that's why the wifi card causes conflicts with the video card. The only solution is to not use the wifi or swap it out for a card that uses the USB function of the PCI-e mini card instead of the PCI-e function, such as the MSI card talked about at length in the Everex forums.

If you have your heart set on running x64 Vista then nothing I say is going to matter. Just know that you *will* run into issues. There is a reason we're not all using x64 Windows. But I guess you're just one of those people that has to learn the hard way.

Ah, so you've heard of it, would you happen to have a model number so I can hunt it down?

Edit: nevermind, found it. Should be here on Monday from buy.com

Seriously, give it a rest, I've got all of the software I use on a regular basis installed and it works fine. Anything beyond that will be a relatively minor issue. The only thing I know of that's a little weird is that the CPU clocks down to 800MHz and stays there while on batteries (plugged in works fine). Not exactly a show stopper, but it would be nice to have CPU scaling working in all situations.

Now, as for nothing you say mattering, not true at all. If you know of a way to get CPU scaling working on x64 I'm all ears! Likewise, I might switch back to 32bit if changing out the wifi card to that MSI one will stop the convulsive number of BSoD's it was having.

Hmm, you know, the presence of USB data lines on that slot makes me wonder, has anybody attempted to break it out into a standard USB port? Possibly attach a 4-port mini-hub to it to use some standard USB devices internally?

Opens up a lot of modding potential, similar to what's being done with eeePC's. Would give you a place to plug in any standard USB wifi dongle, internal bluetooth, GPS, touch screen interface (if there's an overlay large enough for these 17" monitors), or even internal USB mass storage which you could use for internal readyboost.

The right button under the touch pad has lost it's spring back feel. It does not click when you touch it and sticks down causing all kinds of issues.

Any way to fix this? I did not spill anything on it.

Oddly, a friend of mine just told me he was going to buy a used everex for $300. The price seems very good, but the one I sold several months ago died and there are lots of people reporting the untimely deaths of their everex from what I can see. Of course the people with the problems are the ones that post.

Basically, should I talk him out of it? Mine worked fine for the length of time I had it, and thought it a great deal when I originally purchased it for $730 at Omax.

Hi,
I know this a bit old of a thread but the Everex Forum is down. It first seemed like the troubleswere with just the main site but now the forums have had issues since late 12/22/08.

Off topic I am hoping everyone has had a great holiday..........

Got the new card, got it installed, works great! Recognized as a USB device which fixed the IRQ conflict and solved the BSoD issue (wifi card causing video drivers to crash, who saw that one coming?)

Edit: Down-clocking issue also resolved, got a signed driver from RMClock thanks to this post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3717128&postcount=2
Can someone post a link to the MSI card? love my Everex, but hate crashing it while using WiFi.

Also, I have been using Vista x64 since I got my machine, with no additional issues, except the IRQ conflict.

Hello again, everyone. looks like there's still been quite a few problems with this laptop. I still have mine, and somehow it still is managing to hobble along.

A class action lawsuit may soon be filed against Everex, regarding this laptop. Might anyone be interested?

I have a rather simple problem, but as I'm a newbie to this, I'm at a loss how to fix it. My DVD drive doesn't seem to be burning anymore. It does fine with music CD's (if I'm patient), but fails reading and writing DVDs. I'm assuming the eye is failing and I need to replace it.
I've never done this upgrade before on a laptop, and I'm wondering what kind of specs I should be looking for in a DVD drive to ensure its a compatible replacement. Any suggestions, or specific models that may be more reliable than the stock one that comes with the laptop?

Have you tried cleaning the eye. Us a high quality cleaner such as they use on high end 35mm camera lenses. I was starting to have alot of DVD issues myself untill a good cleaning with Eclipse II............

Thanks for the quick reply!
I have tried cleaning the eye, though only with a tissue and glass cleaner. I'd think that if it were dust or dirt it would fail even CD burning, though I could be wrong about that. I'll have to find a high quality dust cloth.
Failing that though, I'd like to get an idea of what I should look for in a replacement drive that would fit easily in the drive slot. I'm reluctant to replace it with the exact same drive. What should I be looking for to assure its an easy swap?

I tried Zeiss Lens cloths with chemicals specific for cleaning a lens. You would have thought that would clean it properly but it did not. It wasn't until the Eclipse II and use of PEC's Pads that it truely solvedmy issues. I found out about these as I've started DLSR as a hobby and use these for the Canon 40D.

I was having issues reading but could not burn a single or dual layer DVD, lots and lots of coasters. I'm not saying this is your issue but be sure it is truely clean before diving in to a replacement.

As far as replacement the issue fallswith the door. I believe it is a standard IDE interface but your best bet is the exact drive.

Bought the everex, worst laptop ever ! yea has nice specs but nothing but issues. scanned some the issues and yea i had the wireless card/ gpu issue. wireless card went, and eventually the gpu to. anyone needs parts lmk, other than the hdd, and board got everything else.
